MICROFINANCE

Introduction

• Microfinance is a term for the practice of providing financial services, usually

very small loans, to developing economies. Suggested by the name, most

transactions involve small amounts of money, frequently less than 100 USD.

• Microfinance is composed of many finance services such as loans, credit,

insurance, etc, run on a smaller scale.

History

• In the early 1970's, several pioneering enterprises began experimenting with

loaning to the poor and underserved.

• The first fully-incorporated microfinance and community development bank was

Shore Bank, founded in 1973 in Chicago

• Economics professor Muhammad Yunus is often credited with disbursing the

first micro loan in Bangladesh in 1974. He later went on to found the Grameen

Bank and was awarded the 2006 Nobel Prize for his efforts.

• Another microfinance institution, Accion International, began disbursing micro

loans in Recife, Brazil as early as 1975.
