Probability is the chance that something will happen. Events cannot be predicted with total certainty.
We can say, “How likely they are to happen.”

Probability Experiment is a chance process that leads to a well-defined result called an outcome.
Examples: Flipping a coin
Rolling a die
Outcome is the result of a single trial of an experiment.
Experiment Outcome
Flipping a coin Head (H),Tail (T)
Rolling a die 1,2,3,4,5,6

Sample space is the set of all the possible outcomes or sample points.
Sample Point is just one of the possible outcomes.

Experiment Sample Space Sample Point

Flipping a coin HH,HT,TH, TT Single possible value
(HH)
Rolling a die 1,2,3,4,5,6 Single possible value
(5)

Event is any set of one or more outcomes satisfying some given conditions.
Examples:
a. Getting a TTT when flipping a coin thrice
b. Choosing a “Queen” from a deck of cards (any of the 4 Queens)

Activity: Let’s Roll it!

Directions: Match column A to Column B. Write the correct letter on the space provided.
Column A Column B
____1. Getting an “odd number” (1, 3, or 5) when rolling a die a. Experiment
____2. Tossing a coin twice b. Sample Space
____3. Flipping a coin has only one possible Outcome c. Event
____4. The result of a single trial of an experiment. d. Sample Point
____5. The possible outcomes that can occur when a coin e. Outcome
tossed are HH,TH, TT, HT.
