Daoist Cultivation
Broadcast on September 22, 2020

Hosted by Sharon Smith

With Livia Kohn
Daoist cultivation comes in many different forms, often activated
in qigong today. They include breathing, mental focus, gentle body
movements, qi-guiding, detached observation, as well as internal
alchemy. Historically, they can be linked with different sources and
periods, growing and developing over time.

In This Session:

 Focus on breathing helps to calm the mind. This connects to

concentration in quiet sitting or “embracing oneness.”
 Internal guiding of qi through visualization or body
movements is undertaken in various positions and performed
slowly and with conscious activation of the breath
 Insight meditation releases emotions in favor of cosmic flow.
In the Tang, it was linked with subtle energy awareness and
the activation of internal deities

Master Mantak Chia

Master of Inner Alchemy & Qigong

Mantak Chia was born in Bangkok, Thailand in 1944. Recognized

very early as having great potential for spiritual development, he
was initiated into meditation practices by Buddhist monks at the
age of 6. While studying in Hong Kong, he learned Tai Chi Chuan,
Aikido and Kundalini Yoga from a variety of teachers. His pursuit
of Taoist teachings lead him to meet the White Cloud Hermit, a
Taoist Master originally from Central China, living at that time in
the mountains not far from Hong Kong. Master Yi Eng was to
become Master Mantak Chia's principle teacher. Over a period of
five years, Master Yi transmitted to Master Mantak Chia the most
sacred and closely held Taoist practices, formulas and methods of
internal alchemy, culminating in the Reunion of Heaven and Man.

Realizing that as transmitted to him, these immortal practices could

not easily be absorbed by western students, Master Mantak Chia
undertook to integrate them with his studies in western physical
anatomy. Through this process, he created a unique view of the
internal aspects of these practices. With the Universal Healing Tao
system, he has created for the first time, a way for any individual to
quickly get to the essence of subtle practices whose real purpose
has been shrouded in secrecy for millenia. The author of dozens of
books, booklets, videos and CDs describing the theory and
methods of these practices, Master Mantak Chia has taught
hundreds of thousands of eager students the principles of Taoist
internal practice over the past 40 years. He has certified hundreds
of instructors and practitioners to help in the transmission of these
teachings.

Three Key Cultivations of Qigong to Achieve Optimum
Health
Broadcast on September 24, 2020

Hosted by Sharon Smith

With Faye Li Yip
Qi is the most essential substance that makes up the human body
and maintains life activities. The network of Qi in the body can be
described as the most sophisticated and powerful computer
programme. The three key cultivation method in Qigong practice
provides an effective step by step way to achieve mind-body-spirit
unity and optimum health.

In This Session:

 First key cultivation - cultivation of the body is the basics;

without the basics, any further development of Qi is not solid
 Second key cultivation - cultivation of the breath; the crucial
bridge linking the visible to the invisible
 Third key cultivation - cultivation of the mind/heart; the
embodiment of all three in unity

Qigong: From neuroplasticity to body/brain connectivity

Broadcast on September 24, 2020

Hosted by Sharon Smith

With Michael Flomenhaft
This session will define neuroscience as distinguished from
neurology, particularly with respect to their different perspectives
on brain and neural anatomy and assessment of brain and neural
functioning. This discussion will be predicated on showing the
relationship between QiGong and current and evolving
neuroscience perspectives. Michael will illuminate QiGong as a
practice for enhancing body and brain connectivity and leveraging
neuroplasticity.

In This Session:

 The often opposing differences between a neurological versus

a neuroscientific model and their respective investigations of
brain and nervous system functioning
 The parallel between QiGong and current and evolving
neuroscience
 QiGong as rooted in enhancing positive neuroplasticity and
minimizing harmful neuroplasticity
Michael Flomenhaft

Attorney at Law

Michael Flomenhaft is an attorney at law concentrating in

neuroscience and law, emphasizing traumatic brain injury and pain.
His website describes his background at www.brainjusticeny.com.
His Qigong and Tai Chi education has come from many
outstanding instructors, including Mantak Chia, Sharon Smith, CK
Chu, Inochi, Marc Sabin, Ron Diana, Bruce Frantzis, Robert
Chucrow, Luoke Chen, Weiming Yuan, and Hyland Harris

Michael's neuroscience concentration encompasses imaging

neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, neuroendocrinology, and
psychoneuroimmunology. All these sub-specializations have
important applications to understanding full dimensions of trauma.
Coincidently, they also mirror very specific concerns and pursuits
that are embodied in Qigong. Whereas from the legal perspective,
these understandings depict the full spectrum of injury, Qigong
furnishes a very evolved pathway for enhancing human function in
these domains. In as much as brain trauma is concerned with
damage to brain communication and connectivity, core to Qigong
are practices aimed at enhancing not just brain connectivity, but
also neural and energetic connectivity between the brain and all
body systems that it governs and coordinates with. Whereas
Michael's concern in law is investigating how brain injury affects a
progressive decline in body systems it controls, Qigong instructs
how to connect the brain and body systems holisticly to enhance
their functioning and longevity.  Law is very much rooted in
medicine and medicine is artificially compartmentalized so the
relationship between such things as brain and gut or brain and
immune function are essentially alien relationships to most
physicians. Qigong not only dispels those artificial disconnections
but guides how to strengthen these organ energetic relationships.

Qigong, Chronic Pain and the Science of Coping
Broadcast on September 25, 2020

Hosted by Sharon Smith

With Josie Weaver
Qigong is a non-pharmacological intervention that can help you
navigate a chronic pain journey. Chronic pain costs an individual
enormous energy, and in the United States alone healthcare costs
exceed over a trillion dollars every year in missed work and
medical care expense (Milken Institute report, 2016). Pain is a fact
of life, and Qigong can help.

In This Session:

 Helpful ways to think about what pain really is when you face
it every day
 Why Qigong and meditative movement are good for you
when you have pain
 Simple practices you can start doing to help you with chronic
pain even if you don't practice Qigong at all right now
Josie Weaver

President, Healer Within Foundation

Josie Weaver is a meditative movement teacher of 20 years with

multiple certifications in body work, Tai Chi, Qigong, and yoga.
After working as a manager in the Silicon Valley software industry
for 15 years, she became a teacher, senior trainer and curriculum
developer for the Institute of Integral Qigong and Tai Chi and is
also certified to teach Chen Tai Chi by Master Wong Wai Yi of the
Chen Qingzhou lineage. Josie has a degree in cognitive science and
applies her knowledge and interest in neuroscience when teaching
Qigong and Tai Chi for chronic pain at two functional restoration
programs in the San Francisco Bay Area. Josie is certified to lead
the Empowered Relief pain skills class developed by Dr. Beth
Darnall of Stanford Pain Research. Currently serving as President
of the Healer Within Foundation, a non-profit organization
dedicated to training thousands to improve the health of millions
through mind-body arts, including Qigong and Tai Chi, Josie is
passionate about guiding people towards health and wellbeing.

A talented Tai Chi "player," Josie has participated in group Tai Chi
competition and won awards for well-choreographed performance.
She has taught movement arts, yoga, Qigong, and Tai Chi, at gyms
and health spas and also works one-on-one with people with
mobility challenges who wish to safely practice movement arts to
improve their health condition. Chronic pain patients can benefit
substantially by learning many of the skills that Qigong and Tai
Chi practitioners take for granted including the skill of
interoception, which (with practice) helps a person track internal
bodily events and sensations accurately and without judgment and
can help a pain patient understand their mind and their condition in
a new way and substantially reduce pain levels through lifestyle
changes and better coping. The Qigong and Tai Chi classes at the
chronic pain centers are an asset to the interdisciplinary functional
restoration programs that help restore chronic pain patients back to
levels of function that can help them return to work or reduce their
anxiety and suffering by teaching them valuable skills for
managing their condition including safe movement, pacing of
activities, relaxation, and meditation.

As President of the Healer Within Foundation, a non-profit

organization dedicated to improving lives through mind-body arts
that include Qigong and Tai Chi, Josie has been instrumental in
growing the organization for the last three years which has
successfully trained over 800 new Tai Chi Easy Practice Leaders to
lead practice in their communities throughout the United States.
Also under Josie's leadership, the Healer Within Foundation has
also established over 50 community practice groups in
communities all over the United States and parts of India that offer
simple Qigong and Tai Chi practice for free or nearly free. Through
work with the Healer Within Foundation and her teaching, Josie
believes that these simple yet powerful arts are meant to be shared
with as many people as possible.

Tao of Relationships is where Loren Johnson places much focus

and therefore energy. Loren states that the current state of human
relationships, with each other and with the planet, leave much to be
desired.

Anyone interested specifically in relationships may do well to not

only study the Tao, but specifically Universal Healing Tao because
no one has made more accessible the relationship practices than
Grand Master Mantak Chia.

Recognizing relationships being essential to survive and thrive,

during the coming times especially, the personal and partnership
practices of the Tao and Traditional Tantra he has deeply cultivated

Qi Gong & Burlesque: A recipe for pleasure activism!
Broadcast on September 25, 2020

Hosted by Sharon Smith

With Chicava HoneyChild
Taking Pleasure Activism into the body as a regenerative practice
is a great way to compost, as Master Chia would say, the heavy-
funky energy involved in protesting pick up. This can guide our
centering to what we are struggling for as opposed to fighting
against. We want folks who are putting their bodies on the line to
clear their anger, resentment, anxiety so they can be filling the
streets with love. Activism & Protesting presents a great invitation
into the Tao/Tai Chi/Yin Yang as it can remind us that it's not
eradication of a particular energy we're seeking, but it's balancing
and harmonization. It is very challenging at this time to see and
accept the divine in everything and all the layers and players. But
we must continually strive to in order to reconcile them in our
world and within ourselves.

In This Session:

 Pleasure Activism as a physically regenerative practice

 Synchronicities between Burlesque and Qigong
 Seeing the divine in everything! Bringing Taoist practice into
activism reminds us about balancing and harmonizing
