Friction Coefficients:
Experiments indicate that the coefficient of friction in an oil-lubricated thread-nut
combination is about 0.15 ± 0.5.
The friction in plain (non-rolling) thrust bearing is about the same as in threads. If a
rolling –element bearing is used for the thrust washer, its coefficient of friction will be
about 1/10 of the plain bearing value.

Self-locking and Back-driving Power Screws:

 Self-locking refers to the condition in which the screw can not be turned by the
application of any magnitude of axially applied force to the nut.
 Back-driving is a situation that is opposite to the case of self-locking. An example is
what so-called Yankee screwdriver where the screw is rotated due to pushing on the
nut.

Design of Mechanical Elements I (ME301)1

Problem set (power screws)
Prepared by Dr. N. M. Werfalli.

P-1
A C-clamp, as shown in figure(1), has a trapezoidal threads of 12 mm outside diameter and 2 mm pitch.
The coefficient of friction for screw threads is 0.12 and for the collar is 0.25. The mean radius of the collar
is 6mm. If the force exerted by the operator at the end of the handle is 80 N, find:
1. The length of the handle,
2. The maximum shear stress in the body of the screw and where does this exist,
3. The bearing pressure on the threads.

P-2
The screw of a shaft straightener exerts a load of 30 kN, as shown in the figure(2).
The screw is a square threaded of outside diameter 75mm and 6mm pitch, determine:
1. The force required at the rim of a 300 mm diameter hand wheel, assuming the coefficient of
threads as 0.12;
2. Maximum compressive stress in the screw, bearing pressure on the threads, and maximum shear
stress in threads; and
3. Efficiency of the straightener.

P-3
The pull in the tie rod of an iron roof truss, shown in figure(3), is 50 kN. Design a suitable adjustable
screwed joint. The permissible stresses are 75 MPa in tension, 37.5 in shear and 90 MPa in crushing.

P-4
A sluice gate weighing 18 kN is raised and lowered by means of square threaded screw, as shown in
figure(4). The frictional resistance induced by water pressure against the gate when it is in the lowest
position is 4000 N.
The outside diameter of the screw is 60 mm and the pitch is 10 mm. The outside and inside diameters of the
washer are 150 mm and 50 mm respectively. The coefficient of friction between screw and nut is 0.1 and
for the washer and seat is 0.12. Find:
1. The maximum force to be exerted at the end of the lever raising and lowering the gate.
2. Efficiency of the arrangement,
3. Number of teeth and height of nut, for allowable bearing pressure of 7N/mm2.

p-5)
A toggle jack, as shown in figure(5), is to be designed for lifting a load of 4 kN. When the jack is in the top
position, the distance between the centre lines of nuts is 50 mm and in the bottom position, this distance is
210 mm. The eight links of the jack are symmetrical and 110mm long. The link pins in the base are set 30
mm apart. The links , screw and pins are made from mild steel for which the permissible stresses are 100
MPa in tension and 50 MPa in shear. The bearing pressure on the pins is limited to 20 N/mm 2. Assuming
the pitch of the square threads as 6mm and the coefficient of friction between threads as .20

p-6) F
A differential screw jack is to be made as shown in figure(6). Neither screw
rotates. The major diameter of the screw is 50 mm. The screw threads are of
a square form with single start and the coefficient of thread friction is 0.15
Determine: R.H
a) The efficiency Up screw
b) The load "F" that can be lifted if the allowable stress is 60MPa. per 16 mm

Threaded Fasteners Problem Set.
Prepared by Dr. N.M.Werfalli.

Problem (1)
Two rigid flanges, as shown in figure, are fastened together with an
M42x4 threaded bolt . The joint is to be loaded by a force Q=20 KN. The
tightening factor is taken as 2 and the modulus of elasticity E=200Gpa.
The coefficient of friction of the thread and collar are the same and equal
to 0.15, while the allowable tensile stress is 70Mpa.
a) Find the initial tightening force
b) Check the bolts strength against failure.

Problem (2)
The figure illustrates the connection of a cylinder
head to a pressure vessel using 10 bolts and
confined gasket. The cylinder is used to store gas
at static pressure of 6Mpa. If the tensile yield
100
strength of bolts’ material is 588Mpa and the a
factor of safety was used, what size bolls should
be use for this application?

Problem (3)
A turnbuckle, shown in figure, serve for the adjustment for the hand connection of a brake. It
is loaded by a tensile force F= 900kgf. The turnbuckle has one end right hand and the other
end is left hand. Each screw has one port. The screw is M14, while the coefficient of friction is
.15.
a) Determine the torque applied.
b) The distance by which the cable is shorten for one turn.

Problem (4)
Find the major diameter of the bolted connection shown in the figure . The bolts are tight fitted
and the shear strength of bolt’s material is 90Mpa.

Problem (5)

A crane runway bracket is shown in the figure. If the wheel load is 15KN, determine
the maximum shear stress produced in the bolts used for fastening the bracket to the
roof truss.
