was a kind heart ed man. He was only one

maggie and cared for her.

(i)  Mrs. Thompson saw Joe Thompson
approaching. He was carring Maggie, who
is regarded as a 'precious burden’. She was
refered t o be 'precious' because she
t urned t o an angel in disguise, who filled
Thompson's home and heart wit h love.

ii) What did Mrs Thompson ask her


husband? How did Joe Thompson react
to it?

  (ii) Seeing t he child in her husband’s arm,


Mrs. Joe Thompson sharply quest ioned:
“What have you t here?”. Joe did not reply
immediat ely but pleaded and caut ioned
his wife wit h his looks, t hat asked her t o
be gent le.  Joe spoke t o angry wife only
aft er comfort ably placing Maggie on a
bed.

home?
 (iii)  Joe formed a bond wit h t he child as
soon as he lift ed her in his arms. Usually
Joe Thompson kept rigidly silent in front
of his wife but t hat day he displayed a
firmly-set   count enance and a resolut e
pair of eyes.
He also answered his wife wit h real
indignat ion for Maggie , somet hing which
he never did before.
iv) What reason did Joe Thompson give
his wife for bringing the child home?

had brought Maggie home because she
herself can't walk t o t he poorhouse. He
would t ake her t here t he next day
speaking t o t he guardians of t he poor
house regarding it .

(v)  Joe Thompson became furious when
t he sick child was brought in. She was
seet hing wit h anger and could not ut t er a
word. Lat er, she not only gave Maggie
supper but like a mot her sat t hroughout
wit h her while she was relishing it . She
gave up t he t hought of sending Maggie t o
poorhouse and began t o t ake care of her.
Maggie's nat ure brought a change in heart
of Mrs. Thompson and she whole-
heart dly accept ed Maggie as her child.

i)  What made Mrs Thompson move
towards Maggie in the little chamber?

(i) Joe asked Mrs. Thompson t o be kind


by giving t he views of Christ on lit t le
children. He also reminded her of Maggie's
dead mot her and loneliness, pain and
sorrow, which Maggie was undergoing at
t he movement . This brought a change in
heart of Mrs. Thompson and she went t o
see Maggie.

because it was a sign of hope t hat
revealed t he change in Mrs. Thompson's

He saw Maggie's face t hrough window
and also observed t hat his wife was
t alking t o Maggie.

Thompson could make out t hat she was
not in pain. Joe saw t hat her expression
was sad and t endered but t here was no
bit t erness or pain.

(v) Mr. Thompson did not show any


concern for Maggie and was ignorant ; as if
he does not   know of t he love fost ering 
bet ween Maggie and his wife. He also
didn't refered t o t he child. Joe asked her
wife how soon t he supper would be ready.
