2. PROFESSIONS AND NATIONALITIES
In Spanish the concept of genre is very important, including things.
Things can be «male» or «female». The main concept is: if nouns or
adjectives end in consonant or «o» are «masculine»; so most of them
become in «feminine» adding «a» or replacing «o» by «a»47. Others
have both genres. Analyze and study the following chart48:
MASCULINE FEMININE
profesor profesora
español española
médico médica
cubano cubana
estudiante estudiante
canadiense canadiense
artista artista
dentista dentista
47 Note: There are words ending in «a» and their genre is «masculine» like: papá, problema.

DIOSDADO CORRALES
The indirect object pronouns «le» and «les» change to «se» when
used with the direct object pronouns «lo», «los», «la» and «las».
84 When indirect and direct object pronouns are placed after the verb they must be attached to
it becoming in one word.
85 When the sentence has only one verb it is most common to place the indirect and direct
object pronoun before the verb.
86 This «le» refers to «su mamá»
87 This «les» refers to «sus amigos»
24
SPANISH LANGUAGE BOOKLET - LEVEL 1
SPECIAL USES
With the verbs «decir», «pedir», «saber», «preguntar» and
«prometer» the direct object pronoun «lo» is used with the
indirect object pronoun to complete the idea of the sentence
when a direct object noun is not present. Note how this is
implied rather than stated in the English examples that follow.
- Oye, el concierto de Celine Dion es esta noche. (Listen, Celine Dion’s concert is
tonight.)
- ¿Se lo digo a Ted? (Shall I tell (it to) Ted)?
- No, ya lo sabe. (No, he already knows (it).)
- Yo no tengo dinero para ir al concierto. (I don’t have (any) money to go to
the concert. )
- ¿Por qué no se lo pides a tu hermano? ( Why don’t you ask your brother (for it)? )
- Buena idea. ¿Sabes si María viene con nosotros? (Good idea. Do you know if Maria
is coming with us? )
- No, pero puedo preguntárselo a ella. (No, but I can ask her (that).
(No, pero se lo puedo preguntar a ella)

5. IRREGULAR VERBS IN SPANISH
A verb is considered irregular if its pattern changes at least in one of
the conjugation forms; these changes can occur in present, past or
future tenses. The stem of infinitive is the pattern taken to find out if
a verb is regular or irregular. If in present tense conjugation the stem
bare of infinitive does not change in any of the persons, example,
«hablar: yo hablo, tú hablas, él habla, nosotros hablamos, vosotros
habláis, ellos hablan» such a verb is considered regular. Check the
follow chart, and define why these verbs112 are irregular.
