Lab 03: Introduction to Multisim

Objectives:
1. To study how to construct circuits in multisim.
2. To study how to simulate circuits in multisim.
3. To study how to analyze circuits in multisim.

Equipment:
 Computer
 Multisim software

Theory:
In this lab, we will study and understand basics of multisim software. At the end of
the lab we will know how to construct, simulate and analyze a circuit in multisim.

Multisim:
It is an electronic schematic capture and simulation program of National Instruments
(NI), which provides an advanced industry-standard SPICE simulation environment to instantly
construct simulate and analyze circuit behavior. This software allows for simulations to be
performed instead of physically connecting the different types of IC chips, wire, and
breadboards. We can change any instrument or electronic device as they cannot be damaged in
any way.

Interface of multisim:
Once you open multisim on your computer, the interface of multisim should look
similar to the image shown in fig 3.1.

Figure 3.1: Interface of Multisim 11.0

Note that the interface may be a bit different depending on the version you are using. The one I
am using here is multisim 11.0.

Sections of multisim:
 Menu bar
 Standard Toolbar
 Component Toolbar
 Design Toolbox
 Instrument Toolbar
 Circuit Window
 Simulation Toolbar

Menu bar:
From this bar you can open new design file, you can save a circuit or open a saved
circuit. There are also other option including the simulation option where you can simulate AC
or DC circuit and analyze them. You can also add other toolbars from this menu bar, simply
click on view and move down to tools.

Standard Toolbar:
Standard toolbar gives quick access to option like save, open new design, grapher and
zoom in/out.

Component Toolbar:
It has all the different electronic components that we need to make a complete
circuit.

Design Toolbox:
Using this section you can make different circuits at the same time. You can select
any design without wastage of time.

Instrument Toolbar:
It contains different kinds of measuring instruments like Oscilloscope, multimeter
etc.

Circuit Window:
It is the window where you can construct you circuit.
Simulation Toolbar:
From this section you can simulate the circuit to see if current is flowing in the
circuit.
The location of sections on interface of multisim is given in Fig 3.2.

Construction of Circuit:
Before making a circuit, you need to know which components you have to
use. Once you know that then it’s very easy to make a circuit in multisim. Let’s construct a
circuit with a 12V DC source, 1k ohms resistor, diode, switch and a ground as shown in Fig 3.3.

Steps:
1. First go to the component toolbar and click on “Place Source”. Select DC power form the
options and then anywhere on the circuit window to place the power source.

2. Now click on “Place Basic” on component toolbar. Select resistor form the family section
on the window that pops up and place resistor anywhere near the DC source.

3. To add a diode click on “Place Diode” on component toolbar. Select LED form the
family section on the window that pops up, select any color LED you like and place it on
the circuit window.
4. To add switch click on “Place Basic” on component toolbar. Select switch form the
family section on the window that pops up and select the type of switch you require and
place on the circuit window. Here we will use DIPSW1 switch.

5. Lastly add ground by clicking on Place source from component toolbox. Select ground
and place anywhere on the circuit window.

6. Connect all the components by clicking on the ends of the component. Connect DC
source with one end of switch and ground. Connect resistor with diode and the other end
of switch. Lastly connect diode’s one end with ground and circuit is complete.

Change value and position of component:

If you want to change the value of any component, simply double click on
the component whose value you want to change. A window will pop up where you can change
value and label of the component as shown in Fig 3.4. To change the position of the component,
right click on the component and then rotate in the direction best suitable for circuit.
Figure 3.2: Changing value of component
Simulation of Circuit:
When you complete a circuit you can simulate it to check if current flows
through the circuit. To simulate a circuit simply click on the run/resume simulation button on
simulation toolbar. In the circuit we made, when you click on run the LED will turn on if the
switch is closed. You can also simulate the circuit by clicking on simulate option in the menu
toolbar. Make sure to turn off simulation when you are making changes to the circuit. You
cannot run simulation of two designs at the same time.

Analysis of Circuit:
Now when the circuits is complete and simulation is successful, you can
analyze the circuit as well to see the amount of voltage and current across and through resistors
and other component respectively. To analyze a circuit, the following steps should be followed.
1. To analyze a circuit, first make sure the simulation is turned off, then click on the
simulate option on the menu tool bar and select analysis from the options.

2. Then select AC analysis or DC analysis depending on the type of source you used in the
circuit. We will use DC analysis for our circuit.

3. A window will pop up, select the variable (current, voltage etc.) you want to analyze and
add it to the variables to be analyzed. Here we added current and voltage

4. Then click on simulation and a window will pop up which show the value of that variable
in the circuit. The values are shown in Fig 3.5.
Figure 3.3: Analysis of circuit
Analyze circuit using instruments:
We can also analyze circuits using different instruments from the instrument toolbar. Here we
will use multimeter to find out current through the resistor and voltage across the resistor as
shown in Fig 3.6. The following steps should be followed to analyze circuits using instruments.
1. Select multimeter from the instrument tab and place it near the circuit.

2. To find current, connect the multimeter in series with the circuit. Here we will connect
one end of the multimeter to the switch and other end with the resistor.

3. To find voltage, connect the multimeter in parallel with the circuit. Here we will connect
one end of the multimeter on one side of the resistor and the other end on the other side
of resistor.

4. Now click on resume simulation and then double click on the multimeter.

5. Click on “A” to find current through the resistor.

6. Click on “V” to find voltage across the resistor.
