MASTER’S THESIS WORK
1. Name: MuhibUr Rahman 2. Reg No: NUST201463809MMCS25014F
3. Department/ Discipline: Electrical Engineering
4. Institute: Military College of Signals
5. Thesis Topic: Novel Ultra WideBand Antenna with Multiple Bands Rejection capabilities

6. Brief Description/Abstract:

The Federal Communication Commission (FCC) allocation for UWB wireless communication application
is 3.1 GHz to 10.6 GHz. The most promising technology is UWB for future short range wireless
communication [1]. Some advantages of UWB communication are their high data rate for short range
wireless communication applications, offer more resistance to multipath phenomenon, low complexity and
low emission power. The important part of UWB system is to design Antenna. The antenna designed must be
required to have an omnidirectional and stable radiation pattern and high radiation efficiency [2].
The problem that encounter is that, there exist several narrowband channels used by other wireless
systems within the designated FCC band for UWB systems such as IEEE 802.16 WiMAX operating
at 3.3–3.6 GHz, IEEE 802.11a/n operating at 5.15–5.35 and 5.725–5.825 GHz, and the downlink of X-band
satellite communication systems operating at 7.25–7.75 GHz. These bands generate potential interference
with the UWB communication. Good filtering technique is one of the solution for removing interference. But
the filtering techniques are much expensive and increase the system complexity. So the most simple and
economical solution is to design antenna having band rejection capabilities [3]. Various band-notched UWB
antennas have been developed for UWB wireless communication. There are various techniques to design
band notch antennas such as etching L-shaped, E-shaped, C-shaped, arc shaped and U-shaped slots on the
radiating patch [4-8]. Also there is another technique which uses parasitic strips in the printed monopole [9].
A Novel microstrip fed planar Multiple Band-notch UWB antenna will be proposed. The notching will be
carried out using a technique of slot resonators. Using this technique multiple notch bands will be achieved
that generates potential interference with the UWB systems. The designed antenna will have enhanced
parameters such as low VSWR and advantageous radiation pattern in the desired band. The proposed antenna
will be printed on Roger RO4003 substrate and simulated using CST Microwave studio.

7. Level of Research Already Carried out on the Proposed Topic:

Different band notching techniques have been developed by researchers. Most of the authors had focused
on single band rejection. Various band-rejection UWB antennas have been developed for UWB wireless
communication applications. There are various techniques to design band notch antennas such as etching L-
shaped, E-shaped, C-shaped, arc shaped and U-shaped slots on the radiating patch [4-8]. Also there is
another technique which uses parasitic strips in the printed monopole [9].
These authors fabricated and simulated the antenna on FR-4 substrate. FR-4 is cost effective, however
simulating and fabricating antenna for more than 3 or 4 GHz frequency using FR-4 substrate isn't a good
option because of high loss tangent of FR-4, especially in notch frequencies of microstrip patch antennas
design. So it is not practical to use it in planar monopole antenna that has the band notch more than 4 GHz.
The thesis will evaluate the response of antenna by implementing techniques to notch the interfering bands
from UWB frequency band. It will also explore different techniques to notch the frequency bands which
interfere with the UWB due to their operating power differences. The basic aim of thesis is to design a novel,
cost effective, enhanced parameters microstrip patch Ultra Wideband Antenna with multiple band rejection
capability.

8. Reason/Justification for the selection of the topic:

Antenna is front-end element required in all the modern wireless communication systems; such as mobile
phones, multimedia devices, and other communication devices etc that rely on the transmission or reception
of wireless signals. In this perspective, low-cost, compact size, low profile and power consumption,
wideband and improved gains are the vital parameters in designing the front end element. This can only be
made possible with the help of highly efficient and reliable antennas. So to fulfill these requirements,
Microstrip patch antenna is chosen which is intended to be designed on RogerRO4003 substrate as it is much
more practical at high frequencies. By using suitable techniques or different geometrical shapes, the notching
is achieved whereby maintaining the efficiency of the antenna.

9. Objectives:

Following are the objectives of this research.

1. To design a Microstrip antenna for Ultra WideBand applications.

2. To Notch the bands that causes interference with the UWB systems.
3. To fabricate the proposed UWB antenna with Multiple Band Notch Characteristics.

10. Relevance to National needs:

For the last few years there have been a remarkable progress in the field of antenna design and there has
been a considerable increase in their demand as a front end element. Also, the need for compact size, low
profile, smart, low power consumption and low cost antennas is still requirement in commercial and military
application. Pakistan being the underdeveloped country, is striving hard to catch up to the pace of the rest of
the world. Design of Ultra WideBand Antennas, will be a good step towards the development of
telecommunication industry in Pakistan, due to its extraordinary features. This research will also produce the
initiative among graduate engineers to produce and develop the systems within the country and will save a
lot of foreign exchange for the development of the nation.

11. Advantages:
The use of Ultra WideBand Antennas has proven to be a successful means to increase the communication
capabilities of antennas for commercial and military applications. The proposed Ultra WideBand antenna
will help in increasing the portability and overall performance of wireless application. Moreover the antenna
could be easily used for short distance applications including PC peripherals, WBAN Applications, sensors
like ECG and EMG, GPS etc.

12. Area of Application:

 Communication and Sensors

 Position location and Tracking
 Radar
 Medical Applications
 Home Network Appliances
