1 Introduction, Concept
1.1 Brief Description

The maintenance of a SUPERVAC valveshould be carried out with the assistance of a qualified person
and with the recommanded tools. It is best to maintain the valve in warm conditions.

Precautions:

 Treat the valve components with extreme care to avoid damage and to extend its use.

 Place all valve parts on a piece of cardboard, paper or on a clean workbench.

While production interruption, close the valve to 10mm. Thus, the springs are not under pression and the
time of use is extended.

We recommend using Fondarex original parts for an optimal function.

4 Operation, position of the valve
4.1 Phase 1, Die open

Illustration Explanation

Valve open: The mold is open or the valve

has been removed.

The Pretensions Pins are overpassing the

front surface of the valve.

V170705 105-700105 13
4.2 Phase 2, Die closed.

Illustration Explanation

The mold is closed or pressed into the vise..

The Pretetion Pinscompresse the cu springs,

the system is released.

Initio piston can be pressed to the basic

position at approx 2.5 to 3.2 kg.
And with “P” activated.

V170705 105-700105 14
4.3 Phase 3, Die closed, activation of Stops.

Illustration Explanation

While the production start phase, the valve

will be closed by compressed air (S).
To avoid pollution in the valve due to the less
pressure of the firsts shots.

Air pressure on the (S) hose.

This is necessary because the metal front in

the warm-up phase has not enough kinetic
energy.

V170705 105-700105 15
4.4 Phase 4, cloture of the valve with help of the kinetic energy of the metal.

Illustration Explanation

Valve is closed due to the Kinetical energy of

the alloy. This kinetic energy is transmitted
on the Initio piston which drives the “P”
piston and the vacuum piston.

Closing time is about 0.001s.

0.002 – 0.005 sec.

It is important than the piston can move

In easely manner.

Ideal working place and material for a clean and correct valve maintenance:

6.2 Interval of maintenance

The mentioned inspection intervals are approximate values (experience). They depend on working
manner as well as use of grease and lubricant and the residues of these parting compounds or of metal.

If for any reason there should be a dirt accumulation on the evacuation piston or on the filters, the
vacuum valve has to be dismantled and cleaned without hesitation in order to guarantee the full suction-
capacity and to prevent the valve from damages. The vacuum unit shows the pollution error.

If flashes appear, the surfaces of the vacuum valve and compensator should be cleaned

V170705 105-700105 31
Illustration Explanation

Usually the SUPERVAC vacuum valve has to be

dismantled from the mould for control and cleaning
every 40 to 45 working hours

The compensator has to be dismantled from the die

every 160 working hours

Check the cup springs. If only one spring is

damaged, all springs must be replaced. After about
30'000 shots all cup springs must be replaced
(safety and locking pressure

V170705 105-700105 32
6.3 Replacement of the Evacuation piston

Illustration Explanation

If the evacuation piston is partly or completely filled

with metal and piston can no longer be easily
ejected, knock it out from the backside to the front
side with the brass punch ø9

6.4 Disassembling the Joint O-ring of the Vacustop pistons

Illustration Explanation

Use a slot screwdriver to pull the joint O-Ring out of

the slit of the Vacustop piston.

If the Joint O-Ring is damaged, it must be replaced

6.5 Cleaning and inspection of the Mobile brushings using a brass brush and the guage

Note:The mobile bushings of the Initio Piston and the Evacuation Piston are only removed it there is a
problem, such as infiltration of material between the bushings and the block, deformation of the bushings
or if the corresponding piston does not move easily.

Important: In order to ensure a proper functioning of the valve, the evacuation piston and the Initio piston,
the Counterweight and the Pretention pins must be easily slide into the holes.

I fit is difficult to clean the valve in the conventional prinicp, a ultrasonic cleaning is recommended.
After that rinse thoroughly and greas!

V170705 105-700105 34
Illustration Explanation

Clean the sleeve bore with a sharp edge (old ejector

pin) and the polish with the brass brush.

Note: Possible to use a portable drilling machine

with max. 3500 t/min (with brass brush)

Check the mobile bushing borehole with the well

caliber pin (Gauge ø15 -0,008). The piston must
slide easily in the borehole

If the pistons do not move properly, the mobile

bishing have to be removed and cleaned..

Thoroughly clean the bores in the block. Insert the

bushing into the corresponding bore so that the
clearance for the retaining spring is in front of the
screw thread of the fixing screw

6.7 Cleaning of the valve parts

Illustration Explanation

To clean the parts use:

 Cleaning rags
 alkaline solution (NaOH)
 Brush
 Ultrasonic system
 Compressed air

Place all parts carefully in a container with alkaline

solution (Na OH caustic soda) to degrease the m
thoroughly or clean them with ultrasonic.

Be carefull to not damage the vvalve parts.

Clean with a brush and dry with cleaning rags or
compressed air.

Caution: Do not rub or banging parts together!

V170705 105-700105 37
6.8 Greasing the valve parts

Illustration Explanation

Fondarex recommend and delivers Wolfracoat

grease.

Grease the parts as mentioned below with

Wolfracoat paste to obtain a thin film.

Caution: Grease the mobile bushings only with

anti-rust oil

Apply a film of grease on the surface of the Initio

6.9 Greasing the compensator parts

Illustration Explanation

Note :
The maintenance of the compensator is less
frequent than that of the valve, (every 160 hours or
at the latest every 3 weeks). The compensator has
to be be removed from the mold for cleaning and
inspection.

Slightly greased the cup springs

Carefully grease the inner walls of the block

8.1 Control performance of the valve

Illustration Explanation

The complete assembled valve must be clamped

into a vice in order to press the two Pretension pins
completely into the valve (simulation die closed)

View from above, pressed Pretention pins.

Press the initio piston with a brass punch or by hand

in its end position, the Evacuation piston moves too!
The apploied force should be between 2.9– 3.4kg.

V170705 105-700105 54
Illustration Explanation

The length of the spring is 28mm maximum, 26mm

minimum .

Inject compressed air with a round tip nozzle,

pressurize male stud coupling position M and make
sure that the blow-off function around the evacuation
piston is assured

Inject compressed air with a round tip nozzle,

pressurize male stud coupling position S and check
if the evacuation piston goes back (Vacustop
simulation / without vacuum).

V170705 105-700105 55
Inject compressed air with a round tip nozzle,
pressurize male stud coupling position P and check
if the valve shows no reaction (check that the valve
is not closed by compressed air).

Now press with a screwdriver or a special pressure

scale the Initio piston without damage the valve. The
valve has to close with a force (F) of about 2.3 to 2.9
kg.

The vacuum piston will close around 2.3 to 2.9 kg

of pressure.

10 Lubrification of the valve

The Initio piston in the center of the Supervac vacuum valve has to be lubricated 1 – 3 sec after each
cycle, in order to assure a continuous vacuum die cast production.

Note:
The compensator should also be lubricated at the end of each cycle in order to avoid the appearance of
flashes.
