LEADERSHIP
Leadership is a skill of influencing a group of people to function towards attaining a common
goal, In business setting, this means controlling workers and colleagues with a strategy to meet
the company’s needs.

LEADERSHIP SKILLS
There are five essential leadership skills:

1. SELF DEVELOPMENT
Self development means to develop your abilities and to improve your personal character in any
way. Self development takes place throughout our life. From birth till death human beings try to
develop their character and abilities by improving their personal skills, competencies, knowledge
and talents. In other words, self development can be also called as self guided improvement and
self help because the only person that can help you develop and imrpove your personal character
is you.

2. TEAM DEVELOPMENT
Team development is basically the process of working in a team effectively and efficiently. As
self development focuses on one's own self, team development focuses on the team as a whole.
In order to develop an effective team you must take everyone on board. You must listen to other
members of the team because each member of a team is valuable to the common goal in their
own way, using a unique set of skills to fulfill a team role.

3. STRATEGIC THINKING AND ACTING


The simple definition of strategic thinking is the ability to plan for the future. Strategic thinking
and acting is one of the main qualities in an effective leader. They are seen as top talents. By
thinking and acting strategically, one can earn long term success of a business, team or an
individual. Strategic thinking makes the person able to make effective decisions that can benefit
him, or an organization in many ways. It is the most important skill in leadership.

4. ETHICAL PRACTICE
An effective leader must be ethical. Ethical practices refers to the professional conduct that every
leader is expected to uphold. Ethics in the workplace is defined as a set of rules that guide
employees to act in line with the morals and values of the company as a whole.
5. INNOVATION
A good and effective leader must be innovative. He must have new ideas. If the leader is
innovative, he can influence his employees to produce creative ideas. Innovative leaders have an
eye for the future. They not only focus on immediate success but also on long term success.

A GOOD LEADER
A good leader can greatly impact the success of team and organization. An effective leader must
understand one’s own motivation, strength and weaknesses. Great leaders connect with their
team by facilitating open communication, encouraging employee growth and development,
giving, and receiving feedback. Hence there are some skills for becoming an effective leader
which are mentioned below:

1. INTEGRITY
Although it may not be a statistic in employee evaluations, the importance of honesty should be
evident. For the individual and the organisation, integrity is essential. This is particularly
important for top management who organise and make countless other important decisions. Our

2. SELF AWARENESS

decision making, and help your direct reports grow. You must build trust with your team in order
to delegate effectively.

A POOR LEADER / INEFFECTIVE LEADER


Poor leader cut out to notify others of the decision being made. They don't shed light on potential
things with people and are amazed that others don't understand them. They presume / suppose
that others have the same belief as them. They don't ask for the feedback or are dismissive of it
when they receive it.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LEADER AND BOSS


A boss directs their employees, while a leader persuades them to innovate, think creatively &
strive for perfection. Every group or team has a boss but what people need is a leader who will
help them achieve greatness. A boss is someone who makes demands, yells at us when we screw
up & ultimately has the power to fire us at will.

Meanwhile, a leader is someone who inspires us, coaches us, rallies the team and helps
everybody to move forward.

EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP
As well as providing direction, inspiration & guidance, good leader inhibit courage, passion,

confidence, commitment & ambition. They bring up the brown n flair of their people & build
teams committed to achieving same goal. The most effective leaders have the following trails in
common.

1. SELF ASSESSMENT
Effective leaders periodically take stock of their personal strengths and short comings, and then
ask: "What do I like to do? What am I really good at? ” What are my areas of weakness and
what do I dislike doing? Knowing your areas of weakness, doesn’t make you weak on the
contrast, it allows you to delegate to others who have those abilities in order to achieve common
goal. Rather than clinging to the false belief that they do it all, great leader hire people who
complements rather than supplement their skills.

2. SHARP PERCEPTION
Effective leaders have an easy level of honest communication with their team and their pairs and
thorough understanding of how they are perceived.

3. RESPONSIVE TO THE GROUP NEEDS


Being perceptive can also help a leader be more affective in knowing the needs of the team.
Some team value trust over creativity, other prefers a clear communicators to a great organizer.
Building a strong team is easier when you know the values and goals of each individual as well
as what they need from you as their leader.

4. KNOWING THE ORGANISZATION


Effective leaders know their organization’s overall purpose goals and the agreed upon strategies
to achieve their goals, they know of their team fits into the big picture and the paths they play in
helping the organization grow and thrives. Full knowledge of organization inside and out is vital
to becoming g an effective leader.

Good communication skills are needed at every level of business.

6. MOTIVATING TEAMS
Inspiring others is the mark of an effective leader. Motivation is best done by example and
guidance not by issuing commands.

Putting together strong teams that work well is another trait of great leaders.

8. RISK TAKING
Effective leaders learn how to assess risk and run scenarios that will help to make better
decisions. Great leaders take right risks at right time.

9. VISION AND GOAL SETTING


A team depends on its leader to tell them where they are going, why they are going and how
they are going to get there. People are more motivated when a leader articulates his or her vision
for a project or for the organization along with the steps and goals needed to achieve it.

INEFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP
Ineffective leaders make orders and give instructions that are mysterious and mislead. Sub
ordinates or other team members often have problem understanding the leader’s motivation
behind certain orders because they make little sense and even contradict the team’s stated
objectives.

SIGNS OF INEFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP


Ineffective leadership can come in a variety of shapes and sizes, unrelated to ages and genders.
Here are some characteristics of ineffective leadership.

1. POOR COMMUNICATION

Ineffective leaders seldom respond to emails and voicemail messages in a timely session. He or
she may fail to pass along new information that impacts how you do your job.

2. MICROMANAGEMENT
Ineffective leaders may sometimes be too attentive, micromanaging every little things you do.
Micromanagement occurs when a boss tries to control every aspect of work.

3. LACK OF VISION

If a leader doesn’t have a plan for their team, the entire business can go off the rails. True
leaders understand and promote a clear vision and direction. Lack of vision can contribute to
frequent changes in direction, when a leader is unsure what to do or which way to go next.

4. TOO MUCH EGO


If someone appreciates him or her they think of themselves as a greater leader. In this case he or
she may be consumed with an ego that won’t allow them to listen to anyone else.

5. LACK OF CHARACTER

If a leader who lacks personal integrity or a sense of right and wrong, he or she has lack of
characteristics.

6. ACCEPTING CREDIT WHERE CREDIT ISN’T DUE


Everyone likes to be recognized for a job well done but a poor leader may take all the credit for
the work you or co workers did. True leaders are accountable for their own work and recognize
other’s success.

7. UNFOCUSED OR UNACCOUNTABLE
Ineffective leader who loses focus, fails to pay attention to the details and mental checkout or
underperformed can cause the rest of the team to do the same.

Poor leadership can have a profound impact on the culture of a workplace and even the long
