Origin and Objectives of Physical Education,

Article XIV, Sec. 19 and PSC Legal Mandate

What is Physical Education?

PHYSICAL EDUCATION (PE), is

the interdisciplinary study of all areas of
science relating to the transmission of
physical knowledge and skills to an
individual or a group, the application of this
skills, and their result.
Is an integral part of the educational
program designed to promote the optimum
development of the individual physically,
socially, emotionally, and mentally through
total body movement in the performance of properly selected physical activities.

Physical Education: Its Origin and Brief History

The Greeks where the epitome of the standards of physical training and
culture. Physical Education came from the latin words “physica”, physics and
“educatio”; the training of the bodily organs and powers with a view to the promotion
of health and vigor.
Originally, in ancient times, physical education consisted of gymnastics to
improve strength, agility, flexibility, and endurance. The Greeks considered the
human body a temple that housed the mind and the soul, and gymnastics kept the
temple healthy and functional.
The brief history of physical education would start in just about 1820 when
schools focused on gymnastics, hygiene training and care and development of the
human body. By the year 1950, over 400 Institutes had introduced majors in physical
education. The Young Men’s Christian Association launched its very first chapter
in 1851 and focused on physical activities.
