Let’s Get
Started
The Greeks where the epitome of the standards of physical training and
culture. Physical Education came from the latin words “physica”, physics and
“educatio”; the training of the bodily organs and powers with a view to the promotion
of health and vigor.
Originally, in ancient times, physical education consisted of gymnastics to
improve strength, agility, flexibility, and endurance. The Greeks considered the
human body a temple that housed the mind and the soul, and gymnastics kept the
temple healthy and functional.
The brief history of physical education would start in just about 1820 when
schools focused on gymnastics, hygiene training and care and development of the
human body. By the year 1950, over 400 Institutes had introduced majors in physical
education. The Young Men’s Christian Association launched its very first chapter
in 1851 and focused on physical activities.

The Legal Basis of Physical Education
The State shall promote physical education and encourage sports programs,
league competitions, and amateur sports, including training for international
competition, to foster self-discipline, teamwork, and excellence for the development
of a healthy and alert citizenry.
The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) was created through Republic Act
No. 6847 in 1990 to serve as the sole policy-making and coordinating body of all
amateur sports development programs and institutions in the Philippines. Its primary
function is to provide the leadership, formulate the policies and set the priorities and
directions of all national sports promotion and development, particularly giving
emphasis on grassroots participation.
