a) Loads directly connected to the batteries

The specified number of cells shall guarantee, under the above-mentioned voltage conditions,
respectively:

- maximum voltage of the system = Un + 10%

- minimum voltage of the system = Un – 10%,

considering the following float voltages according to CEI EN 50272-2:

- lead - acid batteries: 2,18 - 2.35 Vpc

- Ni-Cd batteries: 1,36 -1,45 Vpc
and the final voltages specified at point 2.4.1.4.

b) Loads connected to the batteries through stabilizers or inverters (in case of a.c. loads)

For these configurations, the above specified numbers of cells is based on the nominal voltage of the
system and nominal voltage of elements. The number of elements are indicative taking into account
that the voltage range at rectifiers output and stabilizers / inverter input could affect both the nominal
and the final voltage of the battery set.
In case stabilizers or inverters require a minimum input voltage to guarantee the minimum output
voltage, imposed by the loads, the numbers of elements shall be adjusted according to the final
voltages specified at point 2.4.1.4.

In order to ensure the required performances during discharge conditions, the Supplier shall define:

- need for the stabiliser on DC loads;

- recommended or possible stabilisation systems (dc/dc converter, optoisolators, voltage drop
diodes, chopper, discharge shedding), including the definition of intermediate taps, if required.

The following sizing factors are used in the table below.

- Capacity rating factor (Kt)
Kt is the ratio of rated ampere-hour capacity (at a standard time rate, at 20oC or 25oC, and to a
standard final voltage) of a cell, to the amperes that ca be supplied by that cell for t minutes at 20 oC
or 25oC and to a given final voltage.
Kt factors are available from battery manufacturer. For this example, table A.2 of IEEE Std 1115
has been used for Kt factor calculation (it has been considering negligible the difference between
final voltage of 1.10 V, which the table A.2 is valid for, and calculated value of 1.14 V).
- Temperature derating factor (Tt)
Tt is a derating factor to be applied when the operating temperature of the battery is lower than the
standard temperature of stating cell capacity.
Tt factor is available from battery manufacturer.
For this example the figure A.2 of IEEE Std. 1115 has been used.
