1 GENERAL
1.1 SCOPE
This specification sets out the minimum requirements and the inspection plans for the supply of Lead
or Nickel-Cadmium storage batteries for stationary systems.
Any other additional information not covered by this specification will be specified in the applicable
normative references and publications and in the project technical documentation, particularly:
The technical requirements of this Functional Specification are based upon considerations of
performances and functionality, therefore the instructions contained in this Documentation are not
meant to be discriminatory.
Any alternative suggestion will be considered, provided that the compliance with what required in this
document is satisfied both from functional and performance points of view.
1.2.1 Codes
All system, equipment and materials shall be in compliance with the rules valid in the country where
they shall be installed.
Rules applicable to Eni standard are listed in Company Specification:
Applying the above mentioned Company Specification Contractor / Supplier shall verify the validity of
every single standard (latest available version) and besides they shall verify new eventually issued
rules to be applied
All System, equipment and materials shall comply with documents detailed in the Company
Specification
Contractor / Supplier shall verify the validity of every single specification (latest available issue) and
they shall verify new eventually issued regulations to be applied
2.1 DEFINITIONS
Reference to the normative references listed in paragraph 1.2 shall be made for definitions and
terminology.
If not otherwise specified, when H2S is present in the atmosphere, the following concentrations shall
be used:
- 0.10 ppm of H2S continuously;
- 5 ppm of H2S and 2 ppm of SO2 occasionally for brief periods.
The Supplier shall employ suitable protective devices and prove their effectiveness with appropriate
components test certificates.
2.4.1.1 General
The electric storage battery, object of this Functional Specification, shall be suitable for operating as
a floating battery and shall hence satisfy the prescriptions indicated in the Normative References.
The above-mentioned capacity shall also be defined taking into account the operating conditions
specified in the Data Sheet, which shall be guaranteed throughout the conventional life of the battery.
Unless otherwise indicated, the time of discharge shall be:
- Lead–Calcium batteries: C10 - 10h, C1 - 1h
- Nickel-Cadmium batteries: C5 - 5h, C1 - 1h
NUMBER OF ELEMENTS
The specified number of cells shall guarantee, under the above-mentioned voltage conditions,
respectively:
b) Loads connected to the batteries through stabilizers or inverters (in case of a.c. loads)
For these configurations, the above specified numbers of cells is based on the nominal voltage of the
system and nominal voltage of elements. The number of elements are indicative taking into account
that the voltage range at rectifiers output and stabilizers / inverter input could affect both the nominal
and the final voltage of the battery set.
In case stabilizers or inverters require a minimum input voltage to guarantee the minimum output
voltage, imposed by the loads, the numbers of elements shall be adjusted according to the final
voltages specified at point 2.4.1.4.
In order to ensure the required performances during discharge conditions, the Supplier shall define:
- maximum value;
- end of discharge value, taking also into account the resistance of connections and contacts.
a) Float charging, to compensate for the loss of capacity during no-load operation periods. Float
charging is carried out at a constant voltage of ± 2%;
b) Full charging, for recharging the battery nominal capacity after an even partial discharge period.
With the battery under final discharge voltage conditions and with the above-mentioned full charging
cycle, 90% of the nominal capacity shall be restored after no more than 8- 10 hours.
c) Boost charging (manual) for recharging at nominal capacity when putting into service and/or after
replacement of the electrolyte and/or after long idle periods.
Boost charging shall be carried out at ± 3% constant current and with voltage free to rise up to a
prefixed value.
The charging time shall not exceed 10 hours for Pb-Ca batteries and 5 - 6 hours for Ni-Cd batteries.
The charging methods shall be suitable for the type of batteries, in order to maintain their integrity
and life time. Therefore, the valve regulated batteries shall be charged using methods which do not
cause excessive gassing and consequently excessive water consumption.
The batteries shall be suitable for charging at continuous voltage with ripple factor of 5% or lower.
2.4.2.1 General
The materials shall have characteristics suitable for the installation site, the operating and transport
conditions.
The use of mass-produced, standardised materials shall be maximised.
- the maximum amount of cells in each block does not exceed 6 for the Lead-Acid batteries and 8 for
the Nickel-Cadmium batteries;
- the connections between the various cells in each block are carried out outside the container.
The use of multiple containers with internal connections shall be specifically approved by the
Company.
2.4.2.3 Containers
The elements cell containers of a battery shall be in totally or partially transparent material so that the
electrolyte level shall be clearly visible, and in a self-extinguishing material as per one of the following
USA test certificates normative references:
The container shall have suitable mechanical characteristics to withstand transport and
environmental stresses. They shall be watertight and resistant to acid and alkali attack.
The containers shall bear the two polarity signs clearly visible near the respective poles in
compliance with the CEI EN 60896-11 Rule.
The batteries shall be of Lead - Acid or Ni-Cd, vented type, or valve regulated type.
The valve regulated lead – acid batteries (VRLA) can be of two types:
In these cases, the oxygen generated during overcharges will recombines inside the batteries. The
recombination is facilitated by the reduced quantity of electrolyte.
For Ni-Cd valve regulated type, the oxygen recombination will be done by regulation valve.
The choice shall depend upon the usage and the ambient characteristics and place of installation.
The container of vented-type batteries shall be provided with a plugged hole for filling. The plug shall
be provided with free vent and flame arrest device.
The container of valve regulated batteries shall be provided with outlet valve, normally closed to
avoid oxygen entrance from external ambient.
The valves shall be provided with flame arrest device.
Failing any indication, the batteries shall be supplied with pre-charged dry cells with the electrolyte
supplied separately in proper containers.
The hermetic lead-*acid batteries are supplied ready-made and without maintenance and sulphurous
fog emissions and very low hydrogen emission.
The nameplates with the information recommended in the Normative References and the battery tag
shall be made from stainless steel (AISI 316 L) or other corrosion resistant material.
A set of adhesive numbers shall be supplied for the identification of each cell.
c) Insulating carpets
They shall be made of a material resistant to the liquid contained in the cells and shall withstand a
nominal voltage of 3 kV. The insulating carpets shall have a width of 0.5 m and the same length as
that of the access area for control and maintenance.
d) Shelves
Steel shelves shall be protected with continuous acid or alkali-resistant resin coating.
Shelves shall be provided with any required cell supporting accessories, moulding or insulators for
the support from the floor.
If not otherwise indicated on the Data Sheet, for each battery the following tools and instruments
shall be supplied:
The batteries shall, however, be dismantled in units suitable for transportation and their re-assembly
operations shall be as simple and as safe as possible.
2.6 ERGONOMICS
Equipment shall be designed according to ergonomics principles in order to improve system
performances.
Main issues to be evaluated shall be safety, being user friendly and environmental conditions such
as making access easier, lighting, noise level, vibrations, chemicals presence
2.6.2 Accessibility
Components accessibility during installation, erection, operation and maintenance shall be fully in
compliance with to relevant laws and standard. Moreover accessibility will be granted to authorized
personnel only according to relevant codes. Appropriate measures shall be provide to prevent
unauthorized people have access to the equipment
2.7 SAFETY
• type test
• acceptance test
• special test
Supplier / Contractor shall submit its inspection & testing plan, including available equipment
description, for approval.
2.10 DOCUMENTATION
Supplier shall transmit to Company, according to project requirements and schedule, all
documentation listed in required technical documentation data sheet (D.D.S.).
Documentation will be issued in the official language defined in relevant data sheet, adopting
