2. INSTALLATION
2.1 INTRODUCTION
Any deviations from the installation instructions prescribed in this document shall be accomplished in
accordance with the requirements set forth in FAA AC 43.13-2A.

2.2 EQUIPMENT LOCATION CONSIDERATIONS

The GAD 42 Interface Adapter Unit should be mounted in a dry location, which may be pressurized or
unpressurized. A location away from heating vents or other sources of heat generation is optimal. The unit
should be mounted on a flat surface using the flanges provided on the GAD 42 unit. The mounting surface
should provide sufficient electrical bond to the aircraft to minimize radiated electro-magnetic interference
(EMI).

2.3 CABLING AND WIRING

Check that there is ample space for the cabling and mating connectors. Avoid sharp bends in cabling, and
routing near aircraft control cables. Cabling for the GAD 42 should not be routed near components or
cabling which are sources of electrical noise.

2.4 MINIMUM INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

A GPS receiver interfaced to GAD 42 must meet the following interface requirement:

Response Time Less than 5 seconds from selection of valid waypoint on GPS
until valid navigation data is output by GAD 42. This
requirement is met when the GAD 42 is installed with any
GARMIN GPS or GPS/NAV equipment. The installing agency
is responsible for insuring this requirement is met when the
GAD 42 is installed with other manufacturers’ equipment.

4.4 FLIGHT CONTROL
4.4.1 Flight Control Function
The GAD 42 converts label 121 of the GPS ARINC 429 input data to an analog 400 Hz steering signal for
certain Flight Control Systems. If the aircraft’s Flight Control System supports a roll steering interface, this
is the preferred method of driving the FCS from a GPS navigator, as opposed to course datum and
deviation. It allows the GPS navigator to steer the aircraft for better anticipation of flight plan turns,
resulting in less turn overshoot.

In order for GAD 42 to output valid ROLL STEERING and STEERING SUPERFLAG, the following
inputs are required:
• GPS ARINC 429 IN, label 121 (Horizontal Steering Command)
• 26 VAC STEERING REF

4.7 COLLINS EFIS
4.7.1 Collins EFIS Function
The GAD 42 provides a complete long-range navigation interface to many versions of the Collins EFIS 85,
EFIS 86, and EHSI 74/74A/74B. In addition, it allows for the GNS 430 and 530 VOR/ILS receivers to be
displayed on many of these same EFIS systems.

For EHSI 74() installations, the 6-wire Plus Analog LRN interface (Figure 4-11) may be desirable for the
following reasons:
• The previously installed long-range navigation system was installed this way.
• The 622-6198-XX2 part numbers of HPU-74 allow the GAD 42 to read SIN/COS selected course from
the HPU-74() and send it to the GPS receiver via ARINC 429 data. This selected course interface is a
certification requirement for installation of GARMIN GPS 155/155XL, GPS 165, and GNC
300/300XL, and is desirable (but not required) for GARMIN 400/500 Series products.

For EHSI 74() installations, the 6-wire LRN interface (Figure 4-12) may be desirable for the following
reasons:
• This is the only option for all part numbers of EHSI 74B.
• It requires fewer wires to install.

The following VOR/ILS CSDB labels are output by the GAD 42 to a Collins EFIS:

Label # Parameter Name

units will not communicate properly.
NOTE
If the 400/500 Series unit displays a “GAD 42 Needs Service” message, return the GAD 42 unit to
GARMIN for service.

5.2.3 Troubleshooting “GAD 42 NEEDS SERVICE” messages.

The two tables shown below define the bits associated with labels 270 and 271. If the message “GAD 42
NEEDS SERVICE” appears on the 400/500 series unit, one or more of the bits in either of these labels has
been set. To determine which bit (or bits), have been set, refer to note 5, Figure 4-2 on page 4-25.

Using a Data Trac, or a similar ARINC 429 data reader, attach the leads to pins 13 & 14 of P421. Do not
disconnect the plug from the GAD 42 when taking the measurement, attach the leads in parallel and read the
data for labels 270 and 271. Set the reader to view 32 bits in the binary mode.

The 400/500 series unit will indicate the message “GAD 42 NEEDS SERVICE” if label 270 or 271 is
received with an invalid SSM, RAM, ROM, XILINX, internal supply voltage failure, or if calibration data
is not valid. These types of failures are normally associated with the GAD 42 unit itself and will require
that the unit be sent to GARMIN for repair.

5.3 GROUND TESTS
Not all of the following tests may apply to a given GAD 42 installation. Perform the following post-
installation tests as appropriate. The tests will generally require moving the aircraft away from hangars and
other obstructions so that a GPS unit can acquire a position.
5.3.1 Heading Test
Display the DENSITY ALT/TAS/WINDS page on the 400/500 Series unit. The heading (HDG) is
displayed on this page. Verify that the displayed heading is correct. Verify that the heading remains correct
as the aircraft is taxied in a circle.
5.3.2 Selected Course Test
Select a direct-to waypoint or activate a flight plan on the GPS unit. Keep the GPS unit in “Leg” or “Auto”
mode. Verify that the HSI course pointer agrees with the desired track (DTK) on the GPS unit. Switch the
GPS unit to “OBS” or “Hold” mode. Verify that turning the HSI course knob results in a change in the
selected course displayed on the GPS unit. Verify that the selected course displayed on the GPS unit agrees
with the HSI course pointer.

If the GPS is a GNS 430 or GNS 530 and the installation utilizes a remote course selector:
Change the CDI selection to VLOC and tune the VLOC to VOR channel and change the GPS navigation to
“OBS” or “Hold”. Verify that turning the remote course knob results in a change of the HSI selected course
arrow. Verify that the modified selected course is utilized by the GNS 430/530 VOR receiver. Verify that
the GPS selected course does not change.
5.3.3 RMI/OBI Drive Test
Select a direct-to waypoint or activate a flight plan on the GPS unit. Verify that the RMI/HSI bearing
pointer agrees with the bearing (BRG) on the GPS unit. Verify that the bearing remains correct as the
aircraft is taxied in a circle.

If the GPS is a GNS 430 or GNS 530:

Change the CDI selection to VLOC and tune the VLOC to a nearby VOR. Verify that the RMI/HSI bearing
pointer is correct for that VOR station. The bearing may often be cross-checked by adjusting the OBS
course on a CDI/HSI until the needle centers.
5.3.4 King Serial DME and ARINC 561/568 Test
Verify that distance, groundspeed, and time to go data are displayed correctly on the distance indicator
while the GPS is on the Instrument Panel Self-test Page. In addition, an ARINC 561/568 indicator may
include deviation, bearing, and flight plan waypoints.

5.4 FLIGHT TESTS

Not all of the following tests may apply to each GAD 42 installation. Perform the following post-
installation tests as appropriate.
5.4.1 Collins EFIS Test
Verify that navigation parameters including distance, groundspeed, time to go, course, and bearing are
displayed properly on the EFIS. Activate a flight plan of four waypoints. Select MAP mode or equivalent
on the EFIS. Verify that waypoint or waypoints are displayed on the EFIS. Different models display
different numbers of flight plan waypoints, if they display the waypoints at all.

If the GPS is a GNS 430 or GNS 530:

Change the CDI selection to VLOC and tune the VLOC to a nearby VOR. Verify that the VOR deviation
indication is correct for that VOR station. Tune the VLOC to an ILS channel. Verify that the localizer and
glideslope indications are correct.
5.4.2 Flight Control Test
Verify the autopilot coupling. Verify no “S-turning” during straight and level flight. Verify acceptable
overshoot on intercepts and flight plan leg changes.
5.4.3 True Airspeed Test
Display the DENSITY ALT/TAS/WINDS page on the 400/500 Series unit. The True Airspeed (TAS) is
displayed on this page. Verify that the displayed True Airspeed is correct.
