RESISTOR COLOR CODES
Objective: Determination of the Ohmic value and tolerance of resistors using color

Basic Concepts:

1. The three fundamental properties of every electrical circuit are Current (I), Voltage (V)
and Resistor (R)
2. The Ohm is the unit of resistance which is denoted by Ω.
Introductory Information:

The Ohm is defined as a resistance between two points of a conductor , when a constant
potential difference of 1 Volts applied to these points, produces in the conductor a current of
ampere.

How to read the code:

• First find the tolerance band, it will typically be gold


(5%) and sometimes silver (10%) or none (20%)
• Starting from the other end, identify the first band -
write down the number associated with that color: in
this case Blue is 6.
• Now read the next color, here it is read so write down a
‘2’ nest to the six (you should have ‘62’ so far).
• Now read the third or ‘multiplier exponent’ band and
write down that as the number of zeros.
• In this example it is two so we get ‘6200’ or ‘6,200’. If
the ‘multiplier exponent’ band is black (for zero) don’t
write any zeros down.
• If the multiplier exponent band is Gold, move the
decimal point one to the left.
• If the ‘multiplier exponent’ band is Silver, move the
decimal point two places to the left. If the resistor has
one more band past the tolerance band it is a quality
band.

Zero-Ohm Resistor:

A zero-ohm resistor is a resistor that has almost no resistance at all; its resistance is near 0 ohms.
A zero-ohm resistor can be wire wound or it can be surface mount. For surface
mount resistors, there will be a '0' on it indicating it is a zero-ohm resistor. You can see this in
figure below.

Zero ohm resistors are used where the designer may want to modify the circuit after it is built. It
is easier to add or unsolder a surface-mount resistor than it is to bridge traces or cut a trace.

Rheostat Resistor:

Rheostat is a type of variable resistor, whose resistance can be changed so as to change the
amount of current flowing through a circuit.

This device, was named “Rheostat” using two Greek words “rheos” and “statis” (meaning a
current controlling device), by an English Scientist Sir Charles.

It has two terminals, out of which one is fixed and the other one is a moving terminal. Some
rheostats have three terminals just like potentiometer, although only two terminals are used
(Only one of the two fixed terminals and the moving terminal are used).

Unlike potentiometers, these devices have to carry significant amount of current. Hence, wire
wound resistors are mostly used for the construction of rheostats.

Potentiometer:

A potentiometer is a three-terminal resistor with a sliding or rotating contact that forms an


adjustable voltage divider. If only two terminals are used, one end and the wiper, it acts as
a variable resistor or rheostat.

Potentiometers are commonly used to control electrical devices such as volume controls on
audio equipment. Potentiometers operated by a mechanism can be used as position transducers,
for example, in a joystick. Potentiometers are rarely used to directly control significant power
(more than a watt), since the power dissipated in the potentiometer would be comparable to the
power in the controlled load.

Exercise:

Find the nominal resistance and the possible range of actual resistance values corresponding to
each of the following color codes.

(a) Yellow, Violet, Orange, Silver
