Types of Rooms

In hotels, out of the various types of rooms available, some are common types of rooms.
Other than those a few special types of rooms are also available.

Common types of Rooms:

The maximum numbers of rooms are of this type in any hotel. They are categorized as:
1. Single Room: A room having one single bed, and meant for one person. It is
abbreviated as ‘SGL’ and the symbol is a minus (-) sign.

2. Twin Room: A room having two single beds, separated from each other and meant
for two persons. It is abbreviated as ‘TBR’ and the symbol is a minus (=) sign.

3. Double Room: A room having one composite bed, meant for two persons. It is
abbreviated as ‘DBL’ and the symbol is a minus (+) sign.

4. Suite: This is an apartment having one bed-room with one composite double bed, a
parlour and a dining space. It is abbreviated as ‘S’. Besides the room number every
suite bears a name which is normally depending on the colour scheme, style and
décor, e.g. Jaipur Suite, Presidential Suite, etc. In the suite the furniture and fittings
are posh and these rooms are the most expensive ones on the hotel.

Special types of Rooms:

These rooms are not necessarily found in every hotel. The following are the special types of
rooms generally found in hotels:
1. Cabana: A room situated away from the main building, near the swimming pool,
which is used mainly for changing basis and rented on hourly basis. Cabana may have
a bed and dispense bar is optional.

2. Duplex: These are the rooms having two levels under one roof. The upper level used
as a bedroom and the lower level as a parlour. Both the levels are connected by an
internal staircase.

3. Efficiency Room: These are rooms which have kitchen facility and are generally
found in resort hotels.

4. Hollywood Twin Bedded Room: These are twin rooms with one common
headboard.

5. Hospitality room: A room which can be used by resident guests to entertain their
own guests. These rooms are rented on hourly basis. In these rooms beds are not
provided, only sitting arrangement is there. They are commonly found in commercial
hotels.
6. Inter-Connected Room: Two rooms adjacent to each other having an interconnecting
door, allowing entry from one room to other without having to go into the corridor.
The interconnecting door can be locked to discontinue its use and opened when
required.

7. Junior Suite: This is a large room converted to a suite by a partition (preferably


wooden). The family rooms of old hotels are now being converted to junior suites.
They are not as costly as suites but are priced higher than the regular rooms.

8. Lanai: These are the rooms with a good view.

9. Murphy Bedded Room: A room with a Murphy bed is known as a Murphy bedded
room. A Murphy bed is one which can be folded against the wall. These rooms
provide a greater floor area.

10. Penthouse Suite: These are situated at terrace level and part of them is open to the
sky; generally a part of the parlour is open to the sky.

11. Studio Room: A room which as one single bed and one or two couches or sofas
which can be converted to a bed. They are mostly found in commercial hotels

12. Triple Room: A triple room has three separate single beds and can be occupied by
three guests. These types of room are suitable for groups and delegates of meetings
and conferences.

13. Quad: A quad has four separate single beds and can accommodate four persons
together in the same room.

14. Double-Double Room: A double-double room has two double beds and is normally
preferred by a family or group as it can accommodate four persons together.

15. King Room: A king room ahs king size bed. The size of the bed is 6 feet by 6feet. An
extra bed might be added to this room on the request of the guest and charged
accordingly.

16. Queen Room: A queen room ahs queen size bed. The size of the bed is 5 feet by
5feet. An extra bed might be added to this room on the request of the guest and
charged accordingly.
