1.1 SCOPE
This method of non-destructive examination may be used to detect surface and near surface
discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials.
1.2 TECHNIQUE
1. The area to be inspected shall be dry and free of all dirt and grease or other extraneous material,
which could interfere with the examination.
2. Coatings (i.e. paint, galvanizing) maybe left on the part provided that indications can be detected
through the maximum coating thickness.
1.5 EQUIPMENT
1. Alternating current yoke with a lifting power of at least 10 lbs at the maximum pole spacing that
will be used.
2. Direct current yoke with a lifting power of at least 40 lbs at the maximum pole spacing that will be
used.
3. Dry powder particles (grey or red) the colour which shall provide a contrast with the part to be
examined.
4. Powder dispenser.
1.6 PROCEDURE
1. Clean area to be inspected using any cleaning method, provided that the method used does not
cause discontinuities to be masked.
Uncontrolled copy unless title page has original authorized signature.
3. Energize the yoke and while still energized, use the powder dispenser to apply powder to the
area under the pole areas being examined.
4. Examine the area for any relevant indications while the yoke is still energized.
5. At least two separate examinations shall be performed on each area. During the second
examination, the yoke shall be turned such that the poles are approximately 90º to the first
examination.
1.7 INTERPRETATION
2. Unless service conditions warrant more stringent requirements, the following shall apply:
• Only indications which have dimensions greater than 1/16” shall be considered relevant.
1.8 POST-INSPECTION
