ASCORBIC ACID (IV)

Dose Range:
ADULT:

Usual dose range: 200mg to 10 g / day either 24hrly or divided in 6-12hrly.

Methemoglobinemia (off-label use):1 to 10 g every 6 hours until methemoglobin levels normalize


Covid: 18g/day

PAEDS:
Parenteral nutrition additive, maintenance requirements:
Infants: IV: 15 to 25 mg/kg/day; maximum daily dose: 80 mg/day.
Children and Adolescents: IV: 80 mg daily.
Scurvy, treatment:
Infants, Children, and Adolescents: Limited data available: Oral, IM, IV: Initial: 100 to 300 mg/day in
divided doses for 1 week followed by 100 mg/day until normalization of tissue saturation (~1
to 3 months)

IV Compatibility:
Compatible w/ most common diluents:
Dextrose solutions, NS, LR, Ringer's, ½NS, dextrose-saline, dextrose-LR
IV administration:
Avoid rapid IV injection; may cause temporary faintness or dizziness.
ADULT:
Administer by slow IV infusion at a rate of 33 mg/minute.
PAEDS:
 5 months-12 months: 1.3 mg/minute
 1-11 years: 3.3 mg/minute
IV Preparation:
 Take required amount in compatible diluent in a manner that
 Final concentration of ascorbic acid admixture solution for infusion should 1-25 mg/mL.
 Cover the prepared mixture with foil paper as it is light sensitive.

Storage:
 Unopened IV vials: Store in refrigerator at 2-8°C (36-46°F)
 protect from light, contains no preservatives
 Opened IV vials: Use within 4 hr of vial entry; discard remaining portion.
