IV. PROCEDURES
A. Introduction Good day class! How are you today?
Today is an exciting day for us because we will learn new lesson.
In the previous lesson, you learned about the different elements of
story such as setting, characters and plot that enabled you to write your
own short story. Learning about these elements will lead you to understand
the story better.
However, there’s more to learn aside from writing a story. Journalistic
writing is another important skill a learner should acquire. It is the style of
writing used to report news stories in newspapers, television broadcasts,
on radio and on the Internet. Unlike other styles of writing, which can be
flexible and casual, the characteristics of journalistic writing are easy to
spot. For instance, if you opened a book to a chapter and set it next to a
newspaper article, you would probably notice that, unlike the book, the
article is written in short sentences and paragraphs and quickly gets to the
point.
Today, you will learn to appreciate journalistic writing or newspaper
writing which is very different from story writing.
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to identify the features of
journalistic writing.

B. Development A. Study each of the pictures carefully.

What are shown in the pictures?

Yes, that’s right! A pen, paper, and a reporter’s microphone.

How are they related? Pen, paper and the microphone are used by
reporters to make news.
Is it important for people to be updated with the latest news?
Yes, it is important, so that we are aware of the latest news happening, not
just in our country but in other countries too.
Let’s learn more!
Not too long ago, in the pre-Internet days, people had limited options for
accessing the news. Daily news came in the form of newspapers or
television news programs, while the less urgent stories could be found in
magazines or weekly newspaper supplements. Nowadays, we have instant
24/7 access to any type of news in any format, thanks to the Internet. Yet,
while the ways in which people consume the news have changed
dramatically, the style and principles that guide journalistic writing have
remained largely unchanged.
Journalism is the act of writing about news related subjects for all
mediums, print or non-print. It is also the complicated process of taking
information and sifting through it, editing information, and giving it context.
The journalist is always involved in the selection and presentation of what
he or she considers to be noteworthy and in meeting the standard of
honesty in reporting.
Journalistic writing is the style of writing used to report news stories in
newspapers, television broadcasts, on radio and on the Internet. Unlike
other styles of writing, which can be flexible and casual, the characteristics
of journalistic writing are easy to spot. For instance, if you opened a book
to a chapter and set it next to a newspaper article, you would probably
notice that, unlike the book, the article is written in short sentences and
paragraphs and quickly gets to the point.
The features of journalistic writing:
Purpose- to write about events in a way that appeals to the intended
audience.
Structure:
• Headline- should catch the reader’s attention ang make them want to
read on.
• First sentence/Introduction- The first sentence underneath the headline
should give the reader more information on the story and sum up
what it is going to be about.
• Paragraphs- Split into paragraphs to help the reader clearly understand
the information on the story. Each new paragraph may be given a
subheading.
• Past tense- Written in the past tense because you are reporting on
something that has already happened.
• Third person- In the third person, because you are writing about
somebody else. This means using the names of the people
involved in the story or using ‘he’ or ‘she', not “I” or “me”.
• Conclusion- recap on some of the main points or suggest possible
predictions. The final paragraph should sum up the story. This is
usually a good place to put in your opinion.
Language Features:
• Usually written in past tense.
• Written in 3rd person.
• Includes logical and time connectives.
• Can include quotes form people involved in the story.
• Language is chosen to make the story interesting and appeal to the
intended audience.
