Plant cells
organelles function
Vacuole Regulates internal environment.
Chloroplast Specializes in photosynthesis.
Cell Membrane Protects the cell from its
surroundings.
Cell Wall Protects, structurally supports cells.
Golgi Apparatus Modifies, sorts and ships proteins
and lipids for exports or for insertion
into cell membranes.
Mitochondrion Energy power-house
produces many ATP by aerobic
respiration.
Ribosomes Attached to rough ER and free in
cytoplasm
sites of protein synthesis.
Smooth Endoplasmic Diverse roles; e.g. makes lipids,
reticulum degrades fats, inactivates toxins.
Rough Endoplasmic reticulum Modifies new polypeptide chains;
synthesizes lipids.
Nuclear Envelope PART OF NUCLEUS- double
membrane perforated with pores that
control the flow of materials in and
out of the nucleus.
Nucleolus PART OF NUCLEUS- a small
round body of protein in a cell
nucleus, where ribosomes are made,
synthesized and partially assembled.
Nucleus Keeps DNA and its transcription
into RNA away from potentially
damaging reactions in cytoplasm.

ANIMAL CELLS
ORGANELLES FUNCTION
Mitochondria Makes ATP energy from cellular
respiration. Double membrane cristae.
MICROFILAMENTS
Lysosome Digest foods, clean up and recycle,
digest broken organelles.
PEROXISOME Peroxisomes break down hydrogen
peroxide – harmful compound.
Peroxisomes are involved in the
synthesis of lipids and bile acids.
Centrioles Replicates, reproduces. (Cell division)
Microtubules Give cell structure.
Golgi apparatus Finishes, sorts, labels, and ships
proteins. Ships proteins in vesicles.
CILIA
Smooth Endoplasmic Transports ribosomes. Produces Lipids.
reticulum
Rough Endoplasmic reticulum Makes proteins.
Ribosomes Protein factories (makes proteins) ,
builds proteins from DNA. Location:
Some free in cytoplasm. Some attached
to rough ER.
CHROMATIN
NUCLEAR ENVELOPE
Nucleolus Produces the ribosomes/ Stores DNA.
NUCLEAR PORES
Nucleus Control center of the cell. Protects the
DNA.
PLASMA MEMBRANE
