SECTION A

QUESTION 1

1.1 Convert:

i. 38 0F to K (1 mark)

1.2 Calculate the specific gravity of ash weighing 60 kg having a volume of 0.36 m 3.

1.4 Using sketches, show centroid positions for:

i. A right-angled triangle (2 marks)

1.5 (i) State the principle of conservation of energy (2 marks)

(ii) Calculate the work done by torque of 27.5 kN-m when it turns through 1500.

(3 marks)

1.6 A load of 10t is pulled along a horizontal track by a force inclined at 30 0 to and above

the track. Find the friction force (F) if the coefficient of friction is 0.2. (2 marks)

1.7 The maximum load in a tensile test on a mild steel specimen is 90 kN. If the test

piece is 12 mm in diameter, calculate the Ultimate Tensile Strength of the work piece.

(5marks).

1.8 A lifting machine in a shop raises an engine of mass260 kg by an effort of 210 N. if

the effort moves 13.5 m to raise the engine by 450 mm, calculate:

i. Mechanical advantage (M.A) (2 marks)

ii. Velocity ratio (V.R) (2 marks)

iii. Efficiency of the machine (1 mark)

QUESTION 2

a. State any three (3) laws of friction. (3 marks)

b. A 340 N force parallel to an inclined plane is required to just move a body of

mass 50 kg up the plane which is inclined at 15 0 above the horizontal. Calculate :

i. The coefficient of friction (7 marks)

ii. The force parallel to the plane required to drag the body down the plane at a

constant speed. (5 marks)

a. A 50 N force lifts a 500 N load and a 75 N force lifts a 900 N load.

i. State the law of the machine (4 marks)

ii. Find the effort required to lift 1 400 N using this machine. (3 marks)

b. A single start screw jack raises 14 tonnes using an effort of 4.5 kN at the end of

an arm 38 cm long. The pitch of the screw is 25 mm. calculate the efficiency of

this arrangement. (8 marks)

a. Analytically find the magnitude and direction of the resultant force of the

components of forces shown below. (10 marks)

b. Find the position of balance of a 36 cm rod which has a weight of 10 N at one end

QUESTION 5

An electric train accelerates uniformly from rest and travels 700 m, runs 1 000 m at the

maximum speed attained and is brought to rest at the next station. If the distance

between the stations is 3.2 km and the total time taken is 3 minutes, what is the

maximum speed attained. (15 marks)

QUESTION 6

a. A steel tank of mass 50 kg contains 200 kg of water at 15 0C. A further 100 kg is

poured into the tank at 950C. If the specific heat capacity of the steel is 0.45 kJ/kg

K, Calculate the final temperature of the water in the tank. (5 marks)

b. A steel component of mass 0.8 kg is to be hardened by being heated to 1050 0C

and then plunged into an oil bath. The oil is contained in a steel tank of mass 2 kg

and its initial temperature is 200C. Calculate the minimum mass of oil required in

the tank if the final oil temperature is not to exceed 50 0C. Neglect heat losses to

the atmosphere. Take specific heat capacity of steel to be 0.48 kJ/ kg K and for oil

to be 1.6 kJ/kg K (10 marks)

QUESTION 7

a. A copper wire 1.6 mm in diameter, 4 m long extends 1.7 mm when carrying a

mass of 10 kg. Find:

i. Stress in the wire (3 marks)

ii. Modulus of elasticity of the wire (3 marks)

iii. Factor of safety if the Ultimate Tensile Strength is 220 MN/m 2. (2 marks)

b. Calculate the greatest thickness of brass sheet that can be punched out by a steel

punch 50 mm in diameter if the greatest allowable punch load that can be

exerted by the press is 200 kN. The Ultimate Shear Strength of brass is taken to

be 150 MN/m2. (7 marks)
