such as aerospace, defense, electronics & high technology, automobiles, medical equipment, industrial
products, retail, …

For industry, product lifecycle management (PLM) is considered to be the process of managing the
entire life cycle of a product from its inception. Through engineering and manufacturing designs, to
serve and handle the products being manufactured. PLM will integrate data, processes, and business
systems to provide companies and their expanding businesses.

1. What is PLM?

PLM stands for Product Lifecycle Management. PLM's main objective is to coordinate information,
processes, and people related to the product's life cycle. Product lifecycle management (PLM) is an
information management system that can integrate data, processes, business systems and,
ultimately, people in an expanded business. PLM software enables you to manage this information
throughout the entire product lifecycle effectively and reduce cost from idea, design and production
through service and processing.

2. The stage of the round product

 Concept: The product life cycle begins with a main concept or idea for a new product.
During this phase of the product lifecycle, many research is done to produce products that
people want to use. Usually, it arises in relation to both a certain market and with a certain
problem that it tries to solve.
 Design: When the initial idea for a product is decided, it can be designed and styled. It is
during this phase, the design phase, where designers work to turn product ideas into reality.
It involves creating models, prototypes and eventually testing, to complete a product that is
ready for consumers.
The centralized product information and document management center of PLM
software (Windchill) is often used to track all information generated during this phase.
This ensures that teams always work with the most up to date files. Moreover, PLM
software (Windchill) coordinates those involved in product development with integrated
project management tools. The result is a completely connected and documented
design process.
 Production: Using the data from the previous stage, the product enters the manufacturing
phase of the product life cycle. The final design is moved to a production environment
where another KPI must be monitored. A business must occupy a range of new components,
such as raw material sourcing, costs, country of origin, yield quotas, timelines and more. As
the amount of information used in the production of a new product multiplies, it is
important that an enterprise's PLM system can take into account each variable in the
production process, otherwise it will face with unexpected costs, delays and inaccurate
forecasts.
 Distribution & Maintenance: The final stage of the product life cycle includes proper
distribution and maintenance of the final product. This includes storing the final product,
delivering it to different sales channels, and understanding its overall performance using
customer support and sales data. Before the cycle begins again with a new product, it is
important that the product performance information is collected to be able to understand
exactly how to improve it.

SLM SOFTWARE

To stay competitive and keep customers satisfied, companies are finding they need to provide more
value. Instead of treating a product sale as end point with a customer, successful companies are thinking
about how to provide value to customers as their product is used, for as long as it is used, to maximize
the value and relationship with the customer.
Service Lifecycle Management (SLM) is a way of managing the lifecycle of a product, as it is
used by the customer, to maximize the value of that product. SLM gives companies a
competitive advantage by perpetuating the relationship with a customer and creating value over
the lifetime of the customer’s products.
SLM gives companies new ways to add value for products, such as:
 optimizing performance with smart connected products
 minimizing downtime with predictive analytics
 provide access to accurate and relevant documentation, illustrations, and part lists
 improving service response time and first-time fix rates
 optimizing service parts availability and pricing
 paying for product performance with product-as-a-service (PaaS) models
1. What is a Service Life Cycle Management (SLM) solution?
An SLM solution helps organizations deliver new value to customers by leveraging
embedded software and connected systems to manage the events and performance of product
being used by a customer.
Typically SLM solutions add value by reusing existing engineering and CAD data,
automating accurate service and parts documentation and illustration, connecting to smart
products in the field, predicting product service events and failures, and optimizing service and
parts operations.
With the additional opportunity created through an SLM solution, companies gain
greater insight into how products perform with customers, when products need service, and
how to best service products.
2. How to profit from Service Life Cycle Management software
Engaging with customers beyond the point of sale opens up new opportunities for
companies to provide value, and this value can be monetized into new revenue streams.
Moreover, existing parts and services operations can be shifted from a cost center to a profit
center by leveraging SLM and maximizing efficiency.
Smart connected products give companies new ways to provide valuable features to customers,
who may opt to pay more for these benefits over non-connected products. High brand affinity is
often attributed to products with accurate and relevant product and service information, which
can be created efficiently and automatically. Companies can reduce service and parts costs
through service optimization, and capture new revenue opportunities created by product value
though PaaS offerings.
3. Should service companies be using PLM and SLM together?
Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) is typically used to manage all stages of product
development with a specific focus on engineering and product revision. PLM often helps manage
a cycle of continuous improvement, whereby products are created and sold, then improved to
be created and sold again. Service Lifecycle Management extends this cycle, by information
about the product journey after its sale and during which a product is used by a customer.
Before SLM software existed, companies had to focus on operational efficiencies and service
management as separate entities from the rest of their business. Companies can finally
approach service operations as a means of collaboration between product development from
PLM and product performance from SLM. Implementing PLM and SLM solutions together gives
companies the power to have a complete process in how a product is made and how it is used
by a customer.

ALM SOFTWARE

Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) is the specification, design, development and testing of
a software application. ALM covers the entire lifecycle from the idea conception, through to the
development, testing, deployment, support and ultimately retirement of systems.
Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) is really an umbrella term that covers several different
disciplines that traditionally were considered separate, including project management, requirements
management, development, testing and quality assurance (QA) as well as customer support and IT
service delivery.
PTC made this announcement at LiveWorx on June 10, 2019. PTC is rebranding Integrity to
Windchill, integrating requirements, systems, and software engineering capabilities.
So at now, PTC didn’t have Integrity Software. They just have only Windchill for PLM and ALM
for customers that make up the PTC Product Lifecycle Platform.
