Worksheet # 07-A

Student’s Name: ___________________ Date: ___________

Objective:
By completing this worksheet, you will be able to:

 Solve real life word problems involving discount.

If the goods are sold at a price higher than the cost price, the manufacturer makes a
profit or gain.
𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒇𝒊𝒕 = 𝑺𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑷𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒆 – 𝑪𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝑷𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒆
If the manufacturer sells the goods at a price lower than the cost price, then he
suffers a loss.
𝑳𝒐𝒔𝒔 = 𝑪𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝑷𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒆 – 𝑺𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑷𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒆

 To express the profit or loss as a percentage of the cost price, we use:

𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒇𝒊𝒕 𝑳𝒐𝒔𝒔
× 𝟏𝟎𝟎% 𝒐𝒓 × 𝟏𝟎𝟎%
𝑪𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝑷𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒆 𝑪𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝑷𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒆
If the cost price of 10 pens is equal to the selling price of 8 pens, find the gain or
loss per cent.

Ali bought a cabinet for $ 6250 and spent $ 375 on its repairs. Then, he sold it for
$ 6890. Find his gain or loss per cent.

 The difference between the original selling price,

also known as the marked price, and the sale price is
called the discount:

𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕 = 𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒆𝒅 𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒆 – 𝒔𝒂𝒍𝒆 𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒆

 The discount is often given as a percentage of the marked price:

𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕
× 𝟏𝟎𝟎%
𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒆𝒅 𝑷𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒆

 Learn more about profit and loss from pages 115-116 of D3 7th Edition.
