 Abstract
Architecture of Iranian cities Caravanserais has influenced creation, evolution, and
social life of Bazaars over time. Although Bazaars have served as elements creating the
cores of the cities, they have caused exhaustion and destruction of the forms of the
Bazaars and its commercial organs in the contemporary times, and replacement of new
commercial complexes has not played an effective role in meeting users’ requirements.
The same case holds for design area of this study (i.e. Hendouha Bazaar of Isfahan, Iran).
Thus, utilization of physical and functional properties (i.e. shape as well as spatial
organization and circulation, respectively) of Isfahan Bazaar Caravanserais can help in
designing it by infill architectural approach (based on historical continuance technique).
A number of researchers have studied Bazaars in areas such as shape structure and activity
system, climate solutions, and spatial resiliency. Moreover, recognition of historical
textures and various interventions within it is another research area. Susceptibility to
physical and functional properties of Isfahan Bazaar Caravanserais has received little
attention from researchers and designers in designing commercial complexes by infill
architectural approach (based on historical continuance technique). The current study
attempts to investigate it by utilizing library studies on one hand, and performing a
computational method on the other hand. An analysis highlighted some properties of the
buildings in areas of geometric and numerical proportions, ratio of special elements to the
total space, figure composition principles, view and section, plan organizing principles,
orientation, entrance hierarchy, and availability and entrance figure of the buildings. In
addition, study samples analysis showed that similar examples had valuable properties
with deployment and critique capabilities. Then, concepts lying in the properties were
derived and turned into contemporary life’s concepts that are suitable for a commercial
complexes building usage (home appliances). The current study is quantitative in terms
of method and practical in terms of purpose. It is retrospective and was inductively
developed.
