INTRODUCTION 1-1

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 GENERAL SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

The CDI-LX single and multi-module sanitary systems consist of one to eight CDI-LX modules
and a control enclosure mounted on one or two frames. Each system is hydrostatically factory
tested, and requires simple utility connections—feedwater inlet, product water outlet, drain, and
power. The six and eight module systems require installation of included spool piece connections
for the headers between the module frame and the enclosure frame. With minor adjustment and
rinse up, the system is ready for online service. Its simple design provides efficient and repeatable
operation, so a truly reliable deionization system is provided.

CDI® is an abbreviation for Continuous DeIonization, and is a USFilter trademark for systems
that produce high purity water by using ion-selective membranes, ion exchange resins, and
electricity. The theory of the CDI module’s operation is explained in-depth in Section 4.1 of this
manual.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS 2-1

2.0 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

This section contains general safety guidelines that workers must follow when installing, operating, and
maintaining USFilter equipment. It must be read and understood prior to system start-up. The guidelines
listed here must be followed at all times to prevent worker injury and equipment damage.

2.1 GENERAL SAFETY GUIDELINES

This subsection contains the safety precautions that are common to all USFilter equipment.

2.1.1 Operator Training

Equipment operators must be trained in the operation of the equipment and in the proper
handling of any hazardous materials or chemicals. Only experienced operators who have
studied this entire manual should be allowed to operate the equipment.

2.1.2 First-Aid Equipment

First-aid equipment must be available in all areas. This equipment must include items
needed to treat most common injuries and any hazardous chemicals used for cleaning;
see Section 2.3 for applicable Material Safety Data Sheets.

2.1.3 Equipment Access

Workers must use caution when accessing the equipment. All measures must be taken to
prevent falls and other accidents when equipment is being installed or serviced.

Use extreme caution when working around liquid treatment equipment. Valve handles,
sample pipes, and other protruding components can cause severe injury to body parts that
strike them. Workers should wear hard hats and safety glasses and should move
cautiously when working under piping and around the equipment.

Never climb on piping to reach equipment or components. Doing so can

WARNING cause worker injury or equipment damage due to falls or equipment tipping.

If equipment to be installed or serviced is above an operator’s normal reach, use safe,

approved ladders or lifting devices to reach the required area.

Avoid using “extension” type or single-run ladders to access equipment, especially when
no flat and stable surfaces exist on which these ladders can rest. Whenever possible, use a
wide, stable folding (free-standing) ladder and tie it to the equipment or piping.
CDI-LX SINGLE AND MULTI-MODULE SANITARY SYSTEMS 68/S44DXX-030 Rev. 0
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS 2-2

2.1.4 Protective Personal Equipment (PPE)

Maintain the necessary clothing and equipment to protect operating personnel. If
hazardous chemicals are used for cleaning or sanitization, please refer to Section 2.3 for
instructions.

2.1.5 Pressures

The sudden release of pressure from pressurized components can cause

WARNING severe injury to workers.

Relieve all pressure from piping and components before performing service.

Use extreme caution when working with high air or liquid pressures. Pressure monitoring
devices must always be installed and working properly. The liquid treatment system must
be operated within the pressure limits shown on the Piping and Instrumentation Diagram
in Section 8.2 of this manual.

2.1.6 Servicing System Components and Equipment

Before performing maintenance on system components and equipment, and especially
when disassembling individual components, workers must be certain that the components
are isolated from pressure, fluids, and electricity. Spring loaded devices, such as valves,
must be in their “relaxed” state—that is, with no compression on the loading spring—to
avoid the sudden and accidental motion of individual parts.

An accidental and sudden release of pressure or fluid, accidental contact with energized
electrical components, or the sudden movement of equipment parts during maintenance
procedures can result in severe injury to workers.

Refer to the component literature in Section 9 for specific maintenance guidelines.

2.1.7 Electricity

Electricity can shock, injure, or cause death.

WARNING
Always disconnect and lock out electrical power for panels or components
before performing repairs or service.

Operators and workers must use caution when working with motors, control panels, and
other electrical components. These components must be properly wired and grounded,
and should not be allowed to come in contact with process fluids or other liquids.

Electrical control panels and instruments must be properly grounded.

CDI-LX SINGLE AND MULTI-MODULE SANITARY SYSTEMS 68/S44DXX-030 Rev. 0
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS 2-3

2.1.8 Temperatures

High temperatures can cause severe burns to exposed skin.

WARNING
Wear gloves and protective clothing when handling components at high
temperatures.

Operators and workers must use caution when working with processes or components
that involve high temperatures.

2.1.9 Servicing Automatically Controlled Components

Accidental and unexpected operation of remote components can cause

WARNING personal injury or death. If controller programming or program
modification is performed while system components are being serviced,
disconnect the controller output devices or the individual component tubing
or wiring to avoid accidental operation.

Workers must use extreme caution when servicing automatically controlled components.
Sudden and unexpected operation of components being serviced can cause severe injury
to the workers involved.

Before working on automatically controlled components, make sure that the automatic
controller is disabled to the point that it cannot be used to operate remote components.
Close, lock, and tag valves and lockout and tag electrical motor starters and other
electrical devices.

Finally, inform other operators and control room workers of any repairs or servicing in
progress.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS 2-4

2.2 SPECIFIC SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

Thoroughly read all of the information in this manual before operating the
CAUTION CDI-LX system.

If deviations from the prescribed procedures are deemed necessary to

achieve the desired performance, consult USFilter for assistance before
making any modifications.

Installation of this system must be completed in accordance with the

procedures outlined in this manual.

2.2.1 Operating Environment

Operate the CDI-LX system within its design specifications for temperature and humidity;
see Section 3.1.3.

Do not operate the system under conditions other than those stated in this manual.
Adhere to all system design requirements listed in Section 1. If the feedwater quality or
product water requirements change from the listed ranges, contact USFilter for
assistance.

Do not put tools, nuts, screws, etc., on the top of the CDI-LX unit. Keeping the top
surface clean will prevent these items from damaging the unit.

Do not attempt to open any of the CDI-LX modules. If any module is opened,
CAUTION then the warranty is voided.

2.2.2 Power Source

The CDI-LX system must not be exposed to extreme variations in incoming alternating
current (AC) line voltage.

Do not connect the system to a power source that will experience severe voltage surges.

Do not apply power to the CDI-LX system until proper flow and pressure
CAUTION have been verified. If not done first, irreversible damage may result.

Increasing electrode amperage to improve water quality may damage the

CDI-LX system unless proper procedures are followed. Contact USFilter for
assistance before making amperage adjustments.

The electrode wiring inside the controller and DC power enclosures are at high
WARNING voltage during operation and present a shock hazard. Before touching the
inside of the power supply box, confirm that AC power has been disconnected
and locked out according to standard Lock-Out/Tag-Out procedures.

Confirm that all ground wires are properly connected to eliminate the
possibility of electrical shock.
CDI-LX SINGLE AND MULTI-MODULE SANITARY SYSTEMS 68/S44DXX-030 Rev. 0
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS 2-5

2.2.3 Piping and Pipe Fitting Connections

Before installing them, inspect all prepared piping to ensure that it is free of storage
debris or cutting tool particles.

Because CDI-LX modules have narrow flow distribution channels, plugging

CAUTION by particles can cause permanent damage.

Always install pressure gauges, sampling ports, sensors, etc., in tee fittings. Do not drill
or tap into piping.

After installing gauges, sampling ports, sensor, etc., always flush out the piping to
remove debris before connecting it to the system.

2.2.4 Pressure and Flow Precautions

Never block off (deadhead) any of the CDI-LX outlets. Deadheading the
CAUTION outlets can result in over-pressurization, leading to permanent damage.

If the system is to be shut down for any reason (as described in Section 7), verify that all
internal unit pressure is relieved and atmospheric (that is, all pressure gauges should read
zero [0]). After internal pressure is verified as atmospheric, plug all inlets and outlets to
avoid module drying or contamination.

2.3 MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS (MSDS’s)

Because of the CDI-LX module’s construction, all chemicals are sealed within each module.
Therefore, the operator will be neither exposed to or in contact with these chemicals. It is
possible, however, that customer-purchased chemicals may be used for cleaning applications. In
these circumstances, it is the chemical supplier’s responsibility to provide the appropriate
MSDS’s with the chemicals.

2.3.1 Customer-Purchased Chemicals

Chemicals purchased from outside sources are supplied with MSDS’s. A file of current
MSDS’s should be kept in a location accessible to all personnel working within the area
where there are chemicals.

If the CDI-LX system receives feedwater directly from a reverse osmosis

CAUTION (RO) system, then a pressure relief valve or rupture disk must be installed
between the RO system outlet and the CDI-LX system inlet.

3.1.3 Operating Environment

The CDI-LX system requires indoor installation out of direct sunlight. The maximum
ambient room temperature should not exceed 104°F (40°C). The system can tolerate
humidity of up to 90%, as long as condensation does not occur.

3.1.4 Space Requirements

The physical dimensions of the CDI-LX system are as follows:*
One and Two Three and Four Six and Eight
Module Systems Module Systems Module Systems

*Check with local codes that regulate the necessary space around an electrical unit. Most
electrical codes require at least three feet (one meter) of clearance around electrical
enclosures, so a minimum three feet (one meter) of clearance is recommended on all
sides of the system.
**Does not include connection space between the module and control enclosure skids.

3.1.5 Electrical Requirements

There must be access to a 208, 240, or 480VAC connection within the immediate area of
the CDI-LX system. See the following page to determine your system model’s voltage
requirements. Then refer to the schematic drawing for the appropriate installation details.

Use the appropriate gauge, three-conductor cable or conduit. Following the National
Electric Code, use the appropriate gauge wires, based on the amperage table on the
following page, with the correct cord or conduit connectors for connecting the AC power
source to the system disconnect switch in the system’s electrical enclosure.

For systems with the Remote I/O Option, a length of twisted pair shielded cable (Belden
9463 or equivalent) must be installed to connect the CDI skid’s electrical enclosure to the
system PLC. Follow the I/O manufacturer’s installation procedures to ensure proper
cable length and termination requirements are met. To reduce the possibility of electrical
interference, this cable must be run in a conduit or wire-way separate from any power
wiring.

3.1.6 Feedwater Requirements

The feedwater must be permeate water from a Reverse Osmosis (RO) system upstream of
the CDI-LX system. See Section 1.4 of this manual for feedwater requirements. If there
are any onsite concerns about meeting the requirements in Section 1.4, then call
Technical Support at the toll free number on this manual’s front cover.

3.1.7 Drain Water Requirements

Place the CDI-LX system near a drain that can handle at least 115% of the maximum
feed flow. The maximum feed flow depends on the recovery and flow rate that the
system operates on. See Sections 1.3 and 1.4 of this manual for the design parameters
and operating limits of this application.

3.1.8 Plant Air Requirements

CDI-LX systems can be equipped with off-skid air actuated product divert (FV-2) and
product-to-use (FV-1) valves. Plant air of 2 cfm at 80 psi would be required to operate
these valves. The systems come equipped with panel mounted solenoid valves that
would be used for actuation.

3.2 EQUIPMENT INSPECTION UPON RECEIPT

Use care when moving equipment and components and when opening shrink
CAUTION wrap. Refer to Section 3.4 for equipment handling guidelines.

1. When the job shipment is received, it must be inspected immediately for completeness
and for shipping damage. Refer to section 8.4 for the Acceptance of Equipment Form.

2. Record the item numbers of all received pieces. Compare the item numbers recorded to
those shown on the shipping list supplied with the equipment, and check off each item
that has been located. If items appear to be missing, contact the carrier and USFilter
immediately.
CDI-LX SINGLE AND MULTI-MODULE SANITARY SYSTEMS 68/S44DXX-030 Rev. 0
PREPARATION AND START-UP 3-4

NOTE: Small components that were removed from major components during preparation for
shipping may not have item numbers. Referring to the piping drawings can identify these
untagged components and the part lists for this job.

3. Perform a close inspection of all major components, piping and sub-components.

Damage can be easily missed during a quick inspection.

Make sure that gauges, sample piping, and tubes have not been damaged or broken off.
Also look for broken, pinched, or bent piping.

4. Perform a close inspection of all boxes and loose components. Verify that no damage has
occurred to these pieces.Check for visible damage to piping, and piping ends. If the
exterior of a crate or box is damaged, open the crate or box and investigate the internal
components for damage.

NOTE: Shipping damage should be promptly reported to both USFilter and the carrier to ensure
repair or replacement. Do not release equipment for assembly until all damage claims
and/or shortage problems have been resolved.

5. If the equipment will be stored before being assembled, reseal any items that were
opened for inspection. Refer to system shutdown procedures in Section 7.1, and
unassembled components storage in Section 3.3.

3.3 STORAGE OF UNASSEMBLED COMPONENTS

Use the following instructions if the equipment will be stored before it is assembled.

NOTE: To store individual system components (such as instruments, valves, controls etc.) refer
to the manufacturer’s storage instructions in Section 11 of this manual.

1. Complete all of the inspection procedures given in Section 3.2.

2. Place a copy of the marked-up shipping list and the written list of received item
numbers together and store them in a safe place. If necessary, make copies of
these lists and distribute them to the individuals who will be involved in the
assembly of the equipment.

3. Select a storage location where all USFilter equipment can be stored in one area.
Avoid separating equipment and components.

Only qualified riggers should attempt to move the equipment. See the next
CAUTION Section for recommended moving procedures for this system.

On large job sites, it is easy for small or separated components to become

misplaced or lost. If the equipment must be separated, note the exact locations of
all pieces on the shipping list or the written list of received pieces.
CDI-LX SINGLE AND MULTI-MODULE SANITARY SYSTEMS 68/S44DXX-030 Rev. 0
PREPARATION AND START-UP 3-5

4. Set the skids and other components on wooden blocks to keep them out of any
standing water and to protect their painted surfaces.

5. Due to the sensitivity of the system’s modules, the CDI-LX system cannot be
stored in outdoor environments. Store the equipment indoors where it will be
protected from sunlight and adverse weather conditions.

If the equipment will be stored for an extended length of time, cover it with
plastic or canvas tarps to protect it from water, dust, paint over-spray, etc.

Make sure all of the electrical panel openings are sealed with tape, and all panel
doors are securely closed.

6. When equipment is brought out of storage, retrieve the original shipping list and
written list of received pieces, and double check the components. Check for:
• missing pieces; locate to avoid delays in equipment assembly and start-up.

3.4 EQUIPMENT INSTALLATION GUIDELINES

All equipment and mechanical components on the shipping list must be installed according to the
piping, wiring, and layout drawings for this project. See Section 8.2 of this manual for all drawings.

Qualified maintenance or construction workers must perform the installation according to

applicable plumbing, wiring, and construction codes and procedures.

For information on installing and inspecting specific components, refer to the vendor literature in
Section 11 of this manual.

3.4.1 Unpacking The System

The CDI-LX system is shrink wrapped for protection. Use care when cutting the shrink
wrap, making sure not to slice into any system components.

3.4.2 Moving The System Into Place

1. Use a forklift with 42” or longer adjustable forks, rated at greater than 5000
pounds, to move the system. 1 and 2 module systems need a forklift with greater
than 1500 pound capacity. The 6 and 8 module systems have 2 skids that should
be moved separately. Set the distance across the outside of the forks to 30 inches
(76cm) for the 1 and 2 module systems, and 48 inches (122cm) or greater for the
3, 4, 6, an 8 module systems. Insert the forks under the side of the system,
centered between the frame channels. Lift the system.

Use safe lifting practices when moving the CDI-LX system. Only qualified
CAUTION riggers should attempt to move the unit.

2. Use restraining straps or other means to keep the unit balanced on the forks. Do
not damage the frame coating with the forks or straps.
3. Move the system to the installation site and set down in its desired location.
4. Bolt the system to the floor through the four holes in the end channels located at
the four corners of the frame with 5/8” anchor bolts (3, 4, 6, and 8 module
systems have six holes per frame).
5. For the 6 and 8 module systems, repeat the above procedure for the enclosure
frame. Make sure to leave enough room between skids to allow for floor bolt
down access.
6. For the 6 and 8 module systems, install the included SS or CPVC spool pieces
that connect the headers from the module skid to the enclosure skid. Connect all
headers together.

Failure to level the system could cause poor system drainage.

3.4.3 Checking Module Torque

The tie-bar nuts on each module must be torqued according to the following
CAUTION procedures before running water through the modules. Incoming water
pressure can cause permanent system damage with loosened tie-bar nuts.

DO NOT open any of the CDI-LX modules; doing so will void the warranty
and cause irreversible damage.

1. Refer to Figure 3-1 for the location and proper tightening sequence of each
module’s end plate tie-bar nuts.
2. Follow the proper tightening sequence, holding the acorn nuts firm on the front of
each module with a 19mm, open-ended wrench.
3. Turn the nuts on the back side of each module to tighten. Use a 19mm deep
socket in a torque wrench as follows:

Figure 3-1: • Set torque wrench to 10 ft.-lbs. (13.5 N-m). Tighten tie-
Numbers indicate tightening sequence bar nuts 1 through 14.
• Set torque wrench to 12.5 ft.-lbs. (17 N-m). Tighten tie-
bar nuts 1 through 12 ONLY. Confirm that 13 and 14 are
still at 10 ft.-lbs. (13.5 N-m).
• Set torque wrench to 25 ft.-lbs. (42.4 N-m). Tighten tie-
bar nuts 1 through 8 ONLY. Confirm that 9 through 12

3.5 CONNECTION OF UTILITIES

This subsection covers utilities and equipment required for system operation, but not provided by
USFilter. These utilities and equipment must be connected and operational before the USFilter
equipment can be operated.

3.5.1 Feed
Feedwater quality must be maintained at the specified levels in Section 1.4 of this manual.

3.5.2 Piping Connections

There are three standard piping connections on the CDI-LX system: feed, product, and
reject. An off-skid product divert may be customer installed as a fourth connection.
1. Check all piping fittings and connections on the CDI-LX system, and tighten any
that were loosened during transport.
2. Thoroughly flush the Reverse Osmosis system and feed piping with particle-free
water before connecting them to the CDI-LX system. DO NOT turn the feedwater
on to the CDI-LX system at this time.
Failure to flush upstream equipment and feed piping may leave particles in
CAUTION the cut and assembled piping, which can plug the internal module passages
and cause irreparable damage.

3. Connect the system’s product connection to a drain for flushing on initial start-up.
See section 3.8. Connect the CDI-LX product line to the product plumbing after
flushing. If a product divert connection has been added, make sure that the
automatic valves on the product line are normally closed, and the product divert is
normally open.
4. Connect the system’s reject connection to drain or an alternate use with Schedule
80 CPVC piping. If the system will be sanitized with hot water, the floor drain or
alternate use materials must be capable of withstanding 176 °F (80 °C) water.

3.5.3 Air Connections

Should off-skid product divert valves be added to the system, then the systems require air
to actuate the product and product divert valves.
1. Ensure that all air line connections are tight.
2. Connect plant air to the inlet of the solenoid valves.
CDI-LX SINGLE AND MULTI-MODULE SANITARY SYSTEMS 68/S44DXX-030 Rev. 0
PREPARATION AND START-UP 3-9

3.5.4 Electrical Connections

Do not connect the CDI-LX system to a source that will experience severe
CAUTION power surges. Such surges can damage the system’s power supply
components and control circuits.

Do not connect the secondary of the isolation transformer to ground, which

WARNING will cause shorting and damage the power supply.

Disconnect power before opening any enclosure, and follow accepted

Lockout/Tagout procedures when working on the system.

1. All field wiring must conform to local electrical codes. Consult USFilter if there
is a conflict between this manual’s instructions and local codes. See Section 3.1.5
for equipment amperage.
2. CDI-LX single module systems are factory wired for 208 or 240VAC single
phase, and the multi-module industrial systems are wired for 480VAC three-phase
electrical service. Refer to the electrical schematic drawings listed in Section 8.2
for the wiring diagram appropriate to your system.

Ensure that the jumpers on each module’s DC power board for line voltage
CAUTION
selection match the transformer secondary voltage before starting the unit.

3. Each power board (located on the back panel of the enclosure) contains 2
terminals designated “TB 4”. These terminals are to enable remote monitoring of
the status of the power board by a PLC or central control.

CAUTION The Maximum rating of these terminals is 1 AMP at 30 V.

CDI-LX SINGLE AND MULTI-MODULE SANITARY SYSTEMS 68/S44DXX-030 Rev. 0
PREPARATION AND START-UP 3-10

3.5.5 Controls Connections

Refer to Section 8.2 for the appropriate electrical schematic drawings.
1. All systems include an optional input to start and stop the module power supplies.
For example, the CDI-LX system can be interlocked with the RO system to
start/stop it based on the RO system’s status. If this option is not used, then the
factory-installed jumper must be retained.
2. Systems include an alarm output for low or high flow conditions.
3. Systems include resistivity alarm outputs that must interface with a central
controller. This interface controls automatic product and product divert valves
based on water quality.

Should the system include off-skid automatic valves, do not actuate the
CAUTION
product and product divert valves simultaneously. This may result in
pressure surges that can damage the CDI-LX modules.

Control logic must be supplied to delay the closing of the one valve for five
seconds after opening the opposite valve. Contact USFilter Technical
Support at the toll free number on the manual’s front cover if a central
controller is not available.

PREPARATION AND START-UP 3-11

3.6 MODULE OPERATING PARAMETERS

Module operating parameters such as flow rates and percent recovery should be rechecked before
the system is started up for the first time. Write this information down in Table 3-1, and refer to the
table during system start-up procedures.

3.6.1 Determining the Product Flow Rate

The product (dilute outlet) stream flow rate may be increased or decreased within the range
given in Section 1.4 to meet changing usage requirements. Increasing the product flow rate
above the nominal flow rate may decrease the product water quality. Decreasing the
product flow rate below the nominal flow rate may increase the product quality.

3.6.2 Measuring CO2, Hardness and Chlorine

CO2 concentration can be measured directly by titration, adding dilute sodium hydroxide
standard solution to a phenolphthalein endpoint (Hach Test Kit Catalog Number 1436-01).
Total hardness can be measured using commercially available test kits. It is important to
use a sensitive, low-range test kit to ensure total chlorine is less than 0.02 ppm. One
suitable kit is Hach Test Kit Catalog Number 14542-00. Record these measurements in
Table 3-1, and verify that hardness is less than 1.0 ppm as CaCO3 and chlorine is less
than 0.02 ppm.

3.6.3 Calculate Operating DC Current Prior to Start-up

An important part of the start-up process for the CDI-LX system is setting the operating
current correctly for each site.

NOTE: The calculations on the next page assume 10% current efficiency, which is suitable for
many applications. However, 5% current efficiency or a K-factor of 0.041(double the
calculated amperage on the next page) provides the best silica removal.

The DC current set point is determined based on the following site conditions:
• Feedwater quality
• Required product water purity
• Flow rate
(continued onto the next page)
CDI-LX SINGLE AND MULTI-MODULE SANITARY SYSTEMS 68/S44DXX-030 Rev. 0
PREPARATION AND START-UP 3-12

To determine the current setting (amps per module), follow these steps:
1. Calculate Feed Conductivity Equivalent
FCE = Measured Conductivity, (µS/cm) + (CO2 ppm x 2.66)
2. Calculate Current (I)

I = 5 * (Q)* (FCE)
(c.e)* (# CELLS)
Where:
Q = product flow (GPM)
FCE = Feed Conductivity Equivalent (µS/cm)
I = Current (amps)
c.e. = 10 for most cases
Example A for CDI-LX10 module
Product Flow = 5 gpm
Feed conductivity = 4.5 µS/cm
Feed carbon dioxide = 5.0 ppm CO2
1. FCE = 4.5 + (2.66 * 5.0) = 17.8
2. I = 5* (5 GPM) * (17.8 µS/cm) /((10) * (10)) = 4.5 amps
Therefore, set the current at 4.5 amps.

Example B for CDI-LX24 module

Product Flow = 13.0 gpm
Feed Conductivity = 2 µS/cm
Feed Carbon Dioxide = 2.5 ppm CO2
1. FCE = 2 + (2.66 * 2.5) = 8.65
2. I = 5* (13.0) * (8.65)/((10)*(24)) = 2.3 amps.
Therefore, set the current at 2.3 amps.

NOTE: The above calculations assume 10% current efficiency, which is suitable for
many applications. However, to obtain the best silica removal requires 5% current
efficiency, or double the amperage calculated above.
CDI-LX SINGLE AND MULTI-MODULE SANITARY SYSTEMS 68/S44DXX-030 Rev. 0
PREPARATION AND START-UP 3-13

3.6.4 Determining Maximum Recovery

Recovery is the percentage of the incoming feedwater that becomes purified product. For
most installations, the CDI-LX system should operate at 90% recovery if the feedwater
contains less than 1.0 ppm of hardness as CaCO3 and is less than 40 µS/cm FCE. The
system can be operated at 95% recovery only if the RO feedwater or product water is
softened.

The 5 to 10% of feedwater that goes to drain is called the reject stream. Increasing or
decreasing the reject flow rate adjusts percent recovery.

The maximum recovery must be determined before adjusting the reject flow
CAUTION rate. If the reject flow rate is adjusted too low, the system recovery will be
too high, and may result in module scaling.

Operating the system at too high a recovery may cause scaling of the CDI-LX
modules. Never operate the CDI-LX system at 95% recovery unless it is fed
with softened RO feedwater.
CDI-LX SINGLE AND MULTI-MODULE SANITARY SYSTEMS 68/S44DXX-030 Rev. 0
PREPARATION AND START-UP 3-14

3.6.5 Determining Reject Flow Rate

The reject flow rate is calculated from the product flow rate and the percent recovery. It
is described by the following equation:
Reject flow rate (gpm) = (Product flow (gpm)/Percent recovery) – Product flow
100
EXAMPLE: Calculating Reject Flow Rate
Assume a CDI-LX30 six-module system has a product flow rate of 90 gpm and can
operate at a maximum recovery of 90%. To determine the desired reject flow rate:
Reject flow rate (gpm) = (90 gpm/ 90 ) – 90 = 10 gpm
100

Therefore, the reject flow rate should be adjusted to 10 gpm.

3.8 EQUIPMENT FLUSH PROCEDURES

The piping and other components must be flushed thoroughly prior to system start-up. The
flushing procedures are critical to the proper start-up and operation of the equipment.

3.8.1 Customer-Supplied Inlet Piping Flushes

1. All system inlet piping must be flushed thoroughly before it is connected to the
CDI-LX system.
Newly installed piping usually contains welding slag, dirt, and other debris that
will plug filters and can damage pumps.
2. If the inlet piping runs have already been connected to the skid, the piping must
be disconnected at this time.
3. Each inlet piping run must be flushed with clean, clear water at the maximum
possible velocity.
Each piping run should be flushed individually while workers observe the effluent
water flow.
4. Each piping run must be flushed until the effluent is clear and clean.
5. After a piping run has been flushed thoroughly, it can be connected to the system.

3.8.2 Piping Flush

Do not flush into a vessel. Always flush out of a vessel to protect the vessel
CAUTION distribution piping (if applicable) and keep the vessel clean.

1. Open the various product valves that allow water to flow through and flush the
system piping.
2. Start the water flow to the system. If necessary, start a pump to move the flush
water forward.
3. The flush water should now flow unimpeded through the piping and various
effluent outlets to the drain.
As the flush continues, close or throttle hand valves as required to direct the water
through all piping. Remember to cycle the product and product divert valves so
both stream lines are flushed, if installed.
While the piping is flushing, open each sample valve in the piping briefly to flush
all dead legs.

4. When the flush effluent is clear and clean, stop the water flow.
If applicable, turn off the pump, reconnect the valve tubing, and remove the
solenoid overrides.

PREPARATION AND START-UP 3-18

3.9 PRESSURE TESTING

Mechanical failure during pressure testing can result in serious injury to

WARNING workers. Do not exceed the pressure rating of components when performing
pressure tests.
Wear eye and face protection when performing pressure tests.
When all equipment and components have been installed, the system must be pressure tested
with water using the following procedures.

3.9.1 General Pressure Guidelines

1. Vent the system, and fill it with water using the normal inlet valves. Perform
pressure testing with water that meets the CDI-LX feedwater requirements.
Do not pressure-test the system with compressed air. If a mechanical failure
WARNING occurs while the system is air pressurized, the released air can propel piping
fragments or other components to high speeds, resulting in worker injury.
Always fill and pressurize the system with water. Water is incompressible
and will not “store” energy as will compressed air.
2. Fill the piping and unit to be tested with water.
3. Pressurize the system to its design operating pressure; do not exceed 100 psi (6.9
bar).
4. Allow the system to remain pressurized for 15 minutes, and then perform a close
inspection.
5. Tighten any fittings that are leaking. If components must be disassembled for
repairs, be sure to relieve all system pressure first.

PREPARATION AND START-UP 3-19

3.10 START-UP PROCEDURES

Follow the steps below for the initial start-up of the CDI-LX system.
NOTE: Any system component with an identification tag is noted in parenthesis (for example,
HV-1). Refer to the Process and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) listed in Section
8.2 for their location within the system.
1. Make sure that the CDI-LX system’s electrical disconnect switch (DS1) is in the OFF
position.
2. Make sure that the system is correctly connected to the power source, as explained in
Section 3.5.4.
3. Make sure that the product line is directed to drain, or that the divert valve is open.
4. Close the system inlet valve (HV-1).
Make sure not to deadhead the RO or transfer pump from a holding tank
CAUTION when closing the system inlet valve. As noted on the CDILX Process and
Instrumentation Diagram, overpressure protection or RO divert to drain
may be required for proper installation.

5. Open the system reject valve (HV-4).

6. Open the system concentrate feed valve (HV-2).
7. Open the system product valve (HV-3).
8. Turn on the feedwater. Slowly open the system inlet valve (HV-1) until it is fully open.
9. Adjust valves to obtain desired flows and pressures in the product and reject streams. The
reject flow is typically set at about 11% of the product flow (this gives a water recovery
of 90%). Valves are adjusted so the product outlet pressure (PI-3) is 2 to 5 psig higher
than the reject outlet pressure (PI-4) at the desired flow rates.

NOTE: Poor water quality may result from operating with the reject outlet pressure (PI-4)
higher than product outlet pressure (PI-3).

10. Clean the CDI-LX system; see Section 6 for the appropriate procedure.
11. Locate the current controls on the display board(s), which are on the panel enclosure’s
door. On one and two module systems these controls are potentiometers and each is
dedicated to the control of one module. Turn these potentiometers counterclockwise to
minimum output. On systems with three or more modules there is one multi-module
controller. Use the channel selector button to select Channel 1 (corresponding to Module
A.) Use the down arrow to set the current value to zero. Repeat this process for the
remaining modules.
CDI-LX SINGLE AND MULTI-MODULE SANITARY SYSTEMS 68/S44DXX-030 Rev. 0
PREPARATION AND START-UP 3-20

12. Turn the CDI-LX system’s electrical disconnect switch (DS1) to the ON position.
13. Locate the module circuit breakers inside the panel enclosure. Verify that each one is in
its ON position so each module is energized. Confirm that the ENABLED light for each
display board is illuminated. Note that systems with three or more modules use a Multi-
Module controller that has one indicator light for ENABLED and another for
DISABLED. The status of these lights corresponds to the module channel selected on
the controller.
14. Turn the potentiometer knobs (or adjust with the up and down arrow keys) until the
current setting calculated in Section 3.6.3 for each module is displayed.
15. Test the flow-monitoring relay.
Slowly close the system inlet valve (HV-1) to shut off water flow to the system. Wait 10
seconds for the modules to go into DISABLED mode (the DISABLED light on each
display board will illuminate). If they do, the flow relay is operating correctly.
If any of the modules do not go into DISABLED mode, verify that no flow is going into
the system, and repeat the procedure. If that module still does not go into standby, there
may be a problem with the flow meter programming or the module controller. Call
USFilter Technical Support at the toll free number on the manual’s front cover.
16. The following instructions will be implemented in different ways depending on the
electrical interfacing for a particular site. Refer to the Operating Sequence Parameters
document for more information. Continue to direct the product water to drain or divert
until it reaches the desired quality for a period of 1 minute. Use the product quality
monitor (AIT-1), to determine product quality during this step.
17. Once product reaches required quality for 1 minute, connect to process. If the system
utilizes automatic valves, open the product valve (FV-1), wait 5 seconds, and close the
divert valve (FV-2). This will need to be done by controlling the solenoid valves that
control the actuated product and divert valves.
18. When the system is at steady state (quality in specification and stable operation), record
operating data on the log sheet provided at the end of Section 5.

OPERATION 4-1

4.0 OPERATION

4.1 THEORY OF OPERATION

4.1.1 Continuous Electrodeionization

Continuous Electrodeionization (CEDI) is a continuous process for high purity water
production by using ion-selective membranes, ion exchange resins, and electricity. DC
electric potential is the driving force for removing ions from the feed stream while
continuously regenerating the resins. The CDI-LX system is a CEDI device that produces
consistent and predictable water quality, better than 99% salt removal, with Reverse
Osmosis (RO) feedwater conductivity of less than 40 µS/cm.

4.1.2 Technology Description

Each CDI-LX module comprises alternating cation- and anion-permeable membranes.
The spaces between the membranes are configured to create liquid flow compartments
with inlets and outlets. The compartments bound by the anion membrane facing the
anode and the cation membrane facing the cathode are product compartments, and the
compartments bound by the anion membrane facing the cathode and cation membrane
facing the anode are reject compartments.

The product compartments are filled with alternating layers of cation, anion and/or an
intimate mixture of both resins. Liquid to be deionized flows sequentially through the
layers of resins.

4.3 CONTROLS OPERATION

The CDI-LX main electrical enclosure is NEMA 12 rated, with NEMA 4 available as a standard
option. It contains the following major components:
• Disconnect Switch
• HAND/OFF/AUTO Switch
• Isolation Transformer(s)
• One DC Power Supply per module
• 1 and 2 module systems: One Controller/Display per module for the DC Power Supply
Board
• 3, 4, 6, and 8 module systems: One multi-module Controller/Display for the DC Power
Supply Boards
• One Circuit Breaker per module for the DC Power Supply Board
• Emergency Stop Button

The CDI-LX system is supplied with a main disconnect switch. In the ON position, the control
transformer (T-2 or T-3) is energized and the instrumentation is enabled. The
HAND/OFF/AUTO switch, (SS-1), controls power to each module’s power controller. When in
the HAND position, the switch energizes the module power contactor. This supplies power to
the isolation transformer. If sufficient flow exists through the system the module power supplies
will be enabled and if the module circuit breakers are closed the system will be ON. The
Emergency Stop and transformer temperature switch can both de-energize the contactor in
CDI-LX SINGLE AND MULTI-MODULE SANITARY SYSTEMS 68/S44DXX-030 Rev. 0
OPERATION 4-4

HAND MODE in the event they are activated. When in the OFF position, the switch ensures
that the module power contactor is open. This prevents power from flowing into the isolation
transformer. In OFF mode no power is allowed to flow to the modules. A remote Start/Stop
circuit is provided for interlocking the CDI system with RO or other pretreatment. In systems
with Remote I/O this circuit is closed by a relay output. In systems without Remote I/O,
terminals are provided for a set of dry contacts to close the circuit. When in the AUTO position,
the module power contactor is not energized until the Remote Start/Stop circuit is closed. The
Emergency Stop and transformer temperature switch can both de-energize the contactor in
AUTO MODE in the event they are activated.

A DC Power supply is provided to control the flow of electrical current through each individual
module. This is done by continuously varying the DC module voltage. This method insures the
current will be regulated to match its set-point even as the module resistance changes due to
variations in feed water quality and temperature. The power supplies have two modes of
operation: ON and STANDBY. The module power supply controller is connected to relay
terminals on the system flow-meter. The relay is programmed in the factory to indicate adequate
flow in the reject and product lines for the modules to operate. This signal is used to turn the
power supplies on. While in the ON mode, the DC power supply is enabled, the controller’s
ENABLED light is illuminated and that respective module is fully operational. If sufficient flow
through the system is not sensed, that controller is placed in the STANDBY mode. In the
STANDBY mode, DC power to that module is interrupted and its power controller’s
DISABLED light is illuminated.

OPERATION 4-5

All display boards are mounted on the main electrical enclosure door. Single module systems
and two module systems have one module Controller/Display per module. This controller has an
LED display that indicates the module current. The module voltage can be displayed by holding
a button on the controller. The current setting is adjusted in the range of 1-10 Amps using a
potentiometer on the front of the display. When the power supply associated with the display is
running the “ON’” LED indicator on the Controller is lighted. When the power supply is not
running and no power is being supplied to the module a “STANDBY” LED indicator is lighted.

On systems with three or more modules a multi-module display board is used. In a multi-module
display, each module is assigned to a display channel. The number of channels active in the
display is set in the factory. The user selects the channel by scrolling with a “CHANNEL”
button. An LED display indicates which channel is active. The voltage and current are shown
simultaneously for the active channel. The current set point in amps for the active channel is
adjusted using the up and down arrow keys located next to the current and voltage displays. The
“ENABLED” LED indicates that the Power Supply on the active channel is on and supplying
power to its module. If the “DISABLED” LED is on the Power Supply on the active channel is
off and no power is being supplied to its module.

OPERATION 4-6

If the emergency stop button is pushed the module power contactor is de-energized. This
ensures that no power flow can flow to the isolation transformer and no power will flow to the
modules. If the Emergency Stop Button is pushed the solenoid valves are activated in order that
the Product Valve FV-1 will be closed and the product-divert valve FV-2 will be opened. In
systems with Remote I/O the status of the emergency stop button is monitored by a discrete
input.

4.4 INSTRUMENTATION

A Thornton 200CR conductivity/resistivity monitor is utilized for indication of product quality.

The monitor includes a low quality alarm indication. Relay contacts are also provided for remote
alarm indication. The alarm setpoint is adjustable from the front of the conductivity monitor. A
4-20 mA analog output is also supplied for remote monitoring of product quality.

Systems are also equipped with solenoids for customer supplied, off-skid automatic valves for
product and product divert. The product valve is normally closed. Once water quality is
acceptable, the product valve must be activated to send product water to use. The product divert
valve is normally open and must be closed once product water quality is acceptable.

Control logic should be used to ensure a five-second delay between opening

CAUTION one valve and closing the other. This prevents pressure surges that can
damage the CDI-LX modules.

A Thornton 200FLOW flow monitor is also utilized to indicate concentrate feed and product
flows. The monitor includes a low flow alarm indication. Relay contacts in the flow monitor are
used to control the ENABLED/DISABLED status of the system. Relay contacts are also
provided for remote alarm indication. The alarm setpoint is adjustable from the front of the flow
monitor. A 4-20 mA analog output is also supplied for remote monitoring of concentrate and
product flows.

On Systems with the Remote I/O option, the 4-20 mA analog signals from quality and flow
instruments are monitored by analog inputs for indication at the system controller. Systems with
the remote I/O option will have all outputs from the CDILX combined in the enclosure, and then
input to a remote PLC via a single field bus connection. The inputs to the PLC are:

• Quality
• Product flow
• Concentrate feed flow
• Emergency stop signal
• Transformer thermal switch signal
• Module Enabled/Disabled signal

The outputs from the PLC back to the CDILX are then:

• Remote Start/Stop
• Solenoid valve Open/Close

SAMPLING AND TESTING 5-1

5.0 SAMPLING AND TESTING

Selected sampling and testing procedures should be performed regularly during the operation of this
system. A well-kept logbook of test dates and results, and of operator observations is an invaluable tool
for monitoring system performance and troubleshooting future performance problems. Any tests used
with this system must be performed on a regular basis and must be accurately recorded in a logbook.

Specific tests and data collection are required to maintain the process and equipment guarantee. For
further information on sampling and testing procedures, refer to the ASTM book of water standards,
volumes 11.01 and 11.02.

TAKING SAMPLES FOR ANALYSIS

NOTE: Refer to the Process and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) in Section 8.2 for sample
port (NV) locations.
There are three system water sample ports on a CDI-LX system: feed (NV-1), product (NV-3),
and reject (NV-4B). Each module also has a sample port on its product line (NV-2A, NV-2B,
etc.).

The following procedures for taking samples, from the US Filter Sanitary Sampling Port manual,
should be used at each of these ports.

5.1.1 Sanitization

Sanitize the Sanitary Sampling Port immediately after installation and after each
sampling operation.

1. Flush the port by turning the port stem to the left, and allow a full flow of liquid
to pass out of the port for 1-2 minutes. Then close the port by turning the stem to
the right.
2. Fill a 20mL plastic polypropylene syringe with at least 19 mL of 70% ethanol,
90% isopropyl alcohol, or 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. Attach the port needle
to the male Luer™ tip of the syringe.
3. Insert the needle all the way into the port through the Luer™ opening, and
express the sanitant into the port. Allow a few milliliters to flow out of the port
outlet.
4. As the needle is removed from the opening, squirt a few milliliters of the sanitant
over the outer surface of the male, Luer™ slip connection.
5. Fill the plastic cap with sanitizer and slip it snugly over the Luer™ outlet of the
port. This will keep the port sanitized between sampling operations.

SAMPLING AND TESTING 5-2

5.1.2 Analytical Water Sampling Operation

Prior to taking water samples, be sure to have on hand an adequate supply of clean plastic
bottles or bags. Glass bottles should not be used for sampling deionized water because
silica contamination of the sample can occur. You can collect liquid samples from the
Sanitary Sampling Port by following any of the procedures below. Duplicate samples
should be taken at each sample point to avoid loss of a sample through laboratory error
and to insure reasonable validity through comparison.
Contact USFilter at the toll free number on this manual’s front cover for current water
testing prices. Plastic sample bottles and bottle labels are available from your USFilter
representative.

Whirl-Pak™ Bag Collection:

1. Lay out an unopened bag on a clean, flat surface.

2. Mark a straight line onto the outside of the bag with a permanent felt-tip marker 3
½” from the bottom of the bag. This mark represents a volume size of 100 mL
when the bag is full. (If a smaller sample is required, mark the bag fill-position
accordingly.)
3. Taking care not to touch the mouth of the bag (at perforation line) with your
fingers, hold one of the yellow tabs and tear off the perforated portion. Hold the
white tabs between thumb and forefinger of each hand, then pull the bag open.
4. Remove the plastic cap from the Sanitary Sampling Port outlet, then open the port
by turning the port stem to the left.
5. Allow the 100 mL to 200 mL of sample to flush the port to remove the residual
sanitant.
6. Place the Whirl-Pak™ bag beneath the port outlet and allow the bag to fill up to
the calibration mark. Close the port.
7. Holding the bag by the yellow tabs, pull them close to the mouth of the bag.
While holding firmly, swing the bag over itself 2 or 3 times in a whirling motion
to close the bag. Fold over the tabs.
8. Place the bag in a rack or suitable container and refrigerate until ready for
analysis. The analysis should be performed within 2 hours of taking the sample.
9. Sanitize the port.

Graduated Cylinder Collection:

CDI-LX SINGLE AND MULTI-MODULE SANITARY SYSTEMS 68/S44DXX-030 Rev. 0
SAMPLING AND TESTING 5-3

1. Choose a sterilized graduated cylinder or other type of container marked at the

appropriate volume required.
2. Remove the plastic cap from the Sanitary Sampling Port outlet. Open the port by
turning the port stem to the left. Before collecting a sample in the container, flush
the port with 100 mL to 200 mL of sample.
3. Place the container beneath the port outlet and fill to level required. Close the
port. Cover the sample container with sterile (flamed) aluminum foil until ready
for analysis. The analysis should be performed within 2 hours.
4. Sanitize the port.

Monitor Attachment Method:

1. Choose a sterilized graduated cylinder or other type of container marked at the
appropriate volume required.
2. Remove the plastic cap from the Sanitary Sampling Port outlet, then open the port
by turning the stem to the left.
3. Allow 100 mL to 200 mL of sample to flush the port to remove residual sanitant.
4. Adjust the port control to reduce the flow to a drip. Remove the top and bottom
plugs of the monitor and, with the membrane facing the port’s Luer™ outlet,
secure the monitor inlet to the outlet Luer™ tip of the port. Push into place,
twisting slightly and firmly.
5. Place a pre-marked Whirl-Pak™ bag or graduated container under the monitory
outlet. Turn the monitor to the left to regulate the liquid flow through the unit.
6. When the liquid reaches the pre-marked line on the bag or the level required in
the container, shut off the Sanitary Sampling Port by turning the monitor to the
right.
7. Remove the monitor from the port, and analyze the sample according to your site
procedures.
8. Sanitize the port.

SAMPLING AND TESTING 5-4

5.2 SAMPLING AND TESTING

NOTE: Since CDI-LX systems receive their feedwater from an upstream Reverse Osmosis (RO)
system, it is important to verify that the RO is functioning properly. Test the RO system in
accordance with the procedures supplied by its manufacturer BEFORE testing the CDI-
LX system to insure the accuracy of all samples.

5.2.1 General Sampling and Testing Guidelines

1. Regular and complete record keeping is critical to maintaining proper operation
of a CDI-LX system.
Thorough monitoring of system performance will allow operators to spot
operating problems early and possibly avoid major equipment damage.
Some of the areas of sampling and testing described here are required to maintain
the process and equipment guarantees.
2. A log sheet is included at the end of this Section. Photocopy this log sheet, and
record all information daily. USFilter requires that the log sheet be completed
daily to maintain warranty.
3. Allow the system to produce water (ON mode) for at least 20 minutes before
taking samples and instrument readings. This allows the system’s flows,
pressures, and temperature to stabilize.
4. When data indicates a potential problem, check each instrument’s calibration for
accuracy before investigating the process.
5. Always record a complete set of data immediately before and after performing a
cleaning procedure.Record any changes in feedwater analysis or operating
conditions.
7. Refer to the remainder of this section for recommended sampling and testing.

SAMPLING AND TESTING 5-5

5.2.2 Sampling and Testing Parameters

The quality requirements for feedwater in Section 1.4 of this manual must be
CAUTION met to maintain the warranty and prevent damage to the CDI-LX modules.
Use the log sheet on the next page to record the following parameters daily.
Total Chlorine
The feedwater’s total chlorine concentration should be measured before system start-up
and recorded daily in the log sheet. The chlorine concentration must be measured
directly at the CDILX system inlet. Measurements taken prior to the RO are not
adequate.

CAUTION The CDI-LX feedwater total chlorine must never exceed 0.02 ppm as Cl2.

Hardness
Record the total hardness (presence of calcium and magnesium) of the CDI-LX system’s
feedwater.

CAUTION The CDI-LX feedwater hardness must never exceed 1.0 ppm as CaCO3.

Conductivity
Record the CDI-LX system’s feedwater (RO permeate) conductivity.
Pressure
The inlet pressure of the feedwater entering the CDI-LX modules must be less than 100
psig (6.9 bar). Record all module inlet and outlet pressures.
CO2
Record the CO2 to calculate the feed conductivity equivalent.
Flow Rates
Record the CDI-LX feed, product, and reject flow rates:
CDI-LX feed flow = RO permeate flow
CDI-LX reject flow = RO permeate flow – CDI-LX product flow

5.2.3 Operating Data Log Sheet

The log sheet on the following page is used to monitor the quality requirements for
feedwater. Daily monitoring of the system can provide early detection of problems that
could jeopardize the warranty and potentially damage the CDI-LX modules.
This log sheet can be used exclusively or in conjunction with a customer-supplied
logbook.

NOTE: The log sheet on the next page is your master copy. Do not write on it. Instead, make
photocopies of it, and use these copies for data recording.

MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOTING 6-1

6.0 MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOTING

The following section details the maintenance procedures for the CDI-LX system. It contains general
maintenance information for the overall system, and component maintenance information for the modules.

This section also lists possible problems and their subsequent causes with the CDI-LX system’s
operation. All operators and personnel involved with this system should read and become familiar with
all maintenance and troubleshooting procedures.

6.1 GENERAL MAINTENANCE GUIDELINES

Perform the following tests once every three months. Check the Troubleshooting portion of this
Section for any recommendations that are not listed below.

1. Check for any water leakage from the modules or their plumbing. If any pipes or fittings
are leaking, see the Troubleshooting subsection for possible solutions.

2. Closely inspect each module for any buildup of salt on the spacers, endblocks, or
endplates. If salt buildup is apparent, turn off power and rinse salt from the affected
modules(s).

Failure to remove salt build deposits from the outside of the modules can
WARNING
lead to system damage.

3. Test the CDI-LX system power boards to make sure it is operating properly. To do this,
stop the flow through the system, and make sure the boards enter DISABLED Mode. The
DISABLED light should illuminate and the power supply output should go to 0.0 amps.

If the system does not go into DISABLED when flow stops, see the Troubleshooting
subsection, or call USFilter at the number on this manual’s front cover.

6.2 SPECIFIC MAINTENANCE GUIDELINES

Periodically, the CDI-LX modules may need cleaning or sanitization to remove scale and
resin/membrane foulants.

Before starting any cleaning or sanitization procedure, see subsection 6.2.1

WARNING
for recommended cleaning solutions and for chemical safety instructions.

CAUTION Do not run a cleaning or sanitization solution through the system when DC
power is on to the CDI-LX modules. Make sure the DC power is OFF before
cleaning. To turn off the power, turn OFF the circuit breakers (CB-A, CB-B,
etc.) on the electrical enclosure.
CDI-LX SINGLE AND MULTI-MODULES SANITARY SYSTEMS 68/S44DXX-030 Rev. 0
MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOTING 6-2

6.2.1 Cleaning Circumstances

The modules may need CLEANING if:
• the product differential pressure increases by 50% without a change in temperature
and flow, or
• the reject differential pressure increases by 50% without a change in temperature and
flow, or
• the product quality declines without a change in temperature, flow, or feed
conductivity, or
• any module’s electrical resistance increases by 25% without a change in temperature.

The above factors may indicate modules fouling or scaling. Contact USFilter Technical
Support to determine if the modules need cleaning for the best cleaning procedure.

6.2.2 Sanitization Circumstances

The system may need SANITIZATION if the product water calls for low levels of
bacteria.

6.2.3 Required Cleaning and Sanitization Equipment

The following equipment must be constructed of material compatible with

WARNING the recommended cleaning solutions. If performing hot water sanitization,
make sure that all equipment is suitable for 176 °F (80 °C) operation.

CAUTION Thoroughly flush all plumbing and other equipment before cleaning or
sanitization to remove debris that might damage the system.

During cleaning or sanitization, the following equipment is required:

Tank
Tank size depends on how many modules your system has. Figure at least 60 gallons
(227 liters) or larger for each module within your CDI-LX system for the appropriate
tank size. The cleaning solution will be prepared in this tank.

Pump
Install a cleaning pump between the system and the cleaning tank. The pump must provide a
minimum discharge pressure of at least 30 psig (2 bar) at the flow rate given in the table on the
next page.

The construction materials of the wetted surfaces in the pump must be compatible with
the cleaning solutions. Plastics generally work well with most cleaning chemicals, but
certain plastics may not be suitable for hot water sanitization operations.

Valves and Hoses

Figure 6.1 shows the flow diagram for cleaning or sanitizing a CDI-LX system. Valves
are needed for mixing, cleaning, and draining the tank.

Flexible hose is ideal for connecting cleaning equipment to the system. Verify that the
construction materials of the valves and hose are compatible with the cleaning solutions,
especially for hot water sanitization.

6.2.4 System Preparation for Cleaning or Sanitization

NOTE: The following cleaning procedures are based on the piping set up shown in Figure 6-1. If
your piping setup is different, you may need to alter these procedures.
1. Close the cleaning pump’s discharge valve until you are ready to pump the
cleaning solution into the CDI-LX system.
2. Turn off the DC power supplies by turning the module control selector switch
(SS1) and each module’s circuit breaker (CB-A, CB-B, etc.) to the OFF position.
3. Close the system feed valve (HV-1) and product valve (HV-3) of the CDI-LX
system. The concentrate valves (HV-2 and HV-4) can be left in the normal
operating position.
4. Connect the discharge of the cleaning pump to the CDI-LX feed CIP connection
(CSP1).
5. Connect the system’s reject CIP connection (CSP3) and product CIP connection
(CSP2) to the cleaning tank.
6. Verify that all piping connections are secure.

6.3 CLEANING AND CHEMICAL SANITIZATION PROCEDURES

Avoid direct skin contact with cleaning chemicals. Wear safety glasses and
WARNING protective clothing.

To reduce the possibility of chemical sprays, relieve the pressure in chemical

lines before disassembly.

Follow the manufacturer’s chemical safety instructions on the container labels.

Check the pH level in any solution before letting it flow to the drain. Follow
all discharge limitations.

CAUTION Do not run a cleaning solution through the system when DC power is applied
to the modules. Make sure the DC power is off before cleaning. To turn off the
power, turn off the circuit breakers (CB-A, CB-B, etc.) located on the
backpanel of the electrical enclosure.

The system can be cleaned and sanitized with five different solutions, depending on what needs to
be removed:
1. Hydrochloric acid (2%)–For removing scale and metal oxides.
2. Sodium chloride/sodium hydroxide (5% brine/1% caustic)–For removing organic
fouling and biofilm.
3. Sodium percarbonate – For reducing biofouling, organic fouling and plugging, and
sanitization.
4. Peracetic Acid – Used for routine sanitization to discourage the growth of bacterial
films.
5. Aggressive Multi-Agent cleaning – This aggressive cleaning protocol of acid, caustic
and percarbonate is recommended for heavily biofouled systems.

NOTE: If you are unsure whether a module is scaled or organically fouled, clean first with
hydrochloric acid and then follow with the brine/caustic cleaning.

6.3.3 Cleaning and Sanitizing with Sodium Percarbonate

WARNING Sodium percarbonate, sodium carbonate, and hydrogen peroxide are

corrosive chemicals. Avoid contact with these chemicals.

CAUTION Do not use powdered sodium percarbonate. It contains impurities that could
harm the modules.

Sodium percarbonate is a combination of sodium carbonate (soda ash) and hydrogen

peroxide. It is an effective biocide and it reduces organic fouling and plugging. In
addition, it is an effective cleaner for removal of biofilms.

Flush the CDI-LX modules with a 5% Sodium Chloride (NaCl) solution both before and
after sodium percarbonate sanitization. The initial NaCl rinse removes any metal ions,
particularly calcium and magnesium, from the modules.

The cleaning and sanitization procedure for sodium percarbonate involves five steps:
1. An initial salt flush
2. A water flush
3. The percarbonate cleaning
4. A second salt flush
5. A final water flush

6.3.4 Sanitizing with Peracetic Acid

WARNING Peracetic acid is a mixture of corrosive chemicals. Avoid contact with these
chemicals.

CAUTION Do not run a sanitization solution through the system when DC power is
applied to the CDI-LX modules.

Flush the CDI-LX modules with a 5% sodium chloride (NaCl) solution both before and
after peracetic acid sanitization. The initial NaCl rinse removes any metal ions,
particularly calcium, and magnesium ions from the modules.

The sanitization procedure for sodium peracetic acid involves five steps:
1. An initial salt flush
2. A water flush
3. The peracetic acid cleaning
4. A second salt flush
5. A final water flush

water sanitization to prevent module damage.

NOTE: It is very important to keep the modules flooded during hot water sanitization. To do so,
have the outlet piping and hose rise above the level of the modules’ inlet connections.

This procedure consists of the following steps:

1. Temperature ramp-up from ambient temperature to sanitization temperature.
2. Temperature hold, for one to two hours in 176 °F (80 °C) water.
3. Cool down from sanitization temperature back to ambient temperature.

STEP 1: Temperature Ramp-up

CAUTION Gradual increase of water temperature avoids thermal shock to the module.

NOTE: The following sanitization procedures are based on the piping setup shown in Figure 6-1
on page 6-4.

1. Follow the instructions in Section 6.2.3 to prepare the modules for sanitization.
Make sure the cleaning tank’s drain valve is closed.
2. Fill the tank with the required RO permeate or CDI product water.
3. Fully open the cleaning pump’s bypass and suction valves.
4. Close the cleaning pump’s discharge valve.
5. Turn on the cleaning pump.
6. Slowly open the cleaning pump’s discharge valve. Readjust the cleaning pump’s
bypass valve to maintain the system feed pressure at 5-10 psig.
7. Turn on the water heater (not shown in Figure 6-1) and gradually increase the
water temperature to 176 °F (80 °C) over a 5-10 minute period.

MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOTING 6-32

STEP 2: Temperature Hold

1. Maintain the configuration described in the preceding step.
2. Set the temperature control system to maintain a water temperature of 176 ±4 °F
(80 ±2 °C).
3. Continue recirculation for one to two hours.

STEP 3: Temperature Cool-Down

1. Maintain the configuration described in the preceding step.
2. Turn off the water heater and cleaning pump.
3. Drain about half of the water’s volume from the tank via the cleaning tank’s drain
valve. Close the drain valve when done.
4. Restart the pump. Gradually add ambient temperature water (RO permeate or DI
water) to the cleaning tank while recirculating water through the CDI-LX system.
This will reduce the recirculating water temperature from 176 °F (80 °C) to less
than 113 °F (45 °C) over a period of 5 to 10 minutes.
5. Close all valves. Disconnect the cleaning system and divert the product and reject
lines to drain.
6. Without turning on the DC power supply, turn on the inlet water, and flush the
system with RO permeate for 5 to 10 minutes. During this period, adjust the flow
rates to normal operating values.
7. After the flush period, turn on the DC power supply.
8. Monitor the product water quality. When the quality of the product outlet water
is acceptable, turn the water supply off, and reconnect to the normal operating
configuration.
9. Readjust flows and pressures.

SHUTDOWN AND STORAGE 7-1

7.0 SHUTDOWN AND STORAGE

This section contains shutdown procedures for a CDI-LX module. It is important that CDI-LX modules
not be allowed to dry out completely. It is also important that standing water not be left in the module,
as this could encourage bacteria growth.

7.1 SYSTEM SHUTDOWN

1. Shut off feed water to CDI-LX module(s).

2. Drain standing water out of CDI-LX module(s).

3. Close isolation valves to prevent evaporation of water in membranes and resins.

7.2 STARTUP AFTER SHUTDOWN

1. Divert product outlet to drain.

2. Turn on feed water to CDI-LX module(s).
3. Operate unit with DC power on, flushing to drain, until desired product water quality is
attained.
4. Clean or sanitize CDI-LX module(s) if desired, or if an increase in pressure drop indicates
that cleaning is necessary.
