Solve the following exercises:

1. In the following exercises, find all first order partial derivatives.

a) z = 1 − (xy)2 . c) z = x2 sen(xy). e) z = x3 y − xy 3 − 10.
b) z = e−x d ) z = 2x2 − 3y − 4. f ) z = e−xy cos(xy).

.

2. Find the gradient of the given functions at the indicated point.

a) f (x, y) = 2e4x/y − 2x at (2, −1). b) f (x, y) = sen(3xy) + y 2 at (π, 1).

3. Suppose that the elevation on a hill is given by f (x, y) = 200 − y 2 − 4x2 . From the site at (1, 2), in which
direction will the rain run off?

4. If the temperature at the point (x, y, z) is given by T (x, y, z) = 80 + 5e−z (x−2 + y −1 ), find the direction from
the point (1, 4, 8) in which the temperature decreases most rapidly.

5. In exercises find the direction of maximum and minimum change of f at the given point, and the values of the
maximum and minimum rates of change

a) f (x, y) = y 2 e4x , (0, −2) b) f (x, y) = x cos(3y), (2, 0)

6. We know that the gradient is normal to the level curve and to the surface (level). If the intersection of two
surfaces is a curve, then the gradients help us find the line tangent to that curve. Find the parametric equations
of the line intersection of the given surfaces at the given point:

a) x + y 2 + 2z = 4, x = 1, (1, 1, 1) c) x2 + y 2 = 4, x2 + y 2 − z = 0, ( 2, 2, 4)
b) xyz = 1, x2 + 2y 2 + 3z 2 = 6, (1, 1, 1) d ) x2 + 2y + 2z = 4, y = 1, (1, 1, 1/2)

7. Find the equation of a plane tangent to the graph of f (x, y) = y 2 − y 4 − x2 but that is perpendicular to the
plane x + 2y − z = 1.

8. Find (if any) the equations of two planes tangent to the graph of f (x, y) = 9 − x2 − y 2 and perpendicular to
each other.

9. The line (−4t + 2, −4t + 2, −t + 1) is normal to f (x, y) = 9 − x2 − y 2 . How many normal lines to the graph of
f and perpendicular to the given line exist?
