Emergency Access to Tailgate Latch

1. Emergency Access to Tailgate Latch - Procedure

1. Remove the tailgate maintenance lid (A).

2. Operate the emergency access lever (B) with a small screwdriver in the direction of the arrow to release the lock.

NOTE: How to read the torque specifications.

1. Tailgate - Adjust

1. Remove the striker cap (A) from the rear trim panel (B).

2. Remove the tailgate support strut.

3. Slightly loosen the tailgate hinge bolts (A) and the striker bolts (B).

4. Adjust the tailgate (C) alignment in the following sequence:

Adjust the tailgate hinges (D) right and left, as well as forward and rearward, by using the elongated holes. Take care not
to hit the rear window when loosening the bolts.
Turn the tailgate edge cushions (E), in or out as necessary, to make the tailgate fit flush with the body at the rear and side
edges.
Adjust the fit between the tailgate and the tailgate opening by moving the striker (F), and adjust the striker right or left until
it is centered in the tailgate latch (G).

5. Tighten each bolt to the specified torque.

6. Make sure the tailgate opens properly and locks securely.

7. Install the tailgate support strut.

8. Apply touch-up paint to the hinge mounting bolts and around the hinges, and let the paint dry.

9. Apply the multipurpose grease to the pivot area of the

tailgate hinges (A) as indicated by the arrows.

If the tailgate latch does not unlock by using the keyless entry transmitter or unlocking the driver's door lock, remove the
maintenance lid (A) from the tailgate lower trim panel, then unlock the tailgate latch by turning the lock lever (B) clockwise
as shown.

2. Tailgate Latch Switch - Test

1. Disconnect the connector (A).

2. Check for continuity between the terminals in each switch

position according to the table.

3. If the continuity is not as specified, the tailgate latch switch

is faulty; replace the tailgate latch (B).

2. Check the actuator operation by connecting power and

ground according to the table.

NOTE: To prevent damage to the actuator, apply battery

voltage only momentarily.

3. If the actuator does not operate, the tailgate release

1. Install the parts in the reverse order of removal.

NOTE: Locate the alignment mark (A) and the joint (B) on
the tailgate weatherstrip (C). Align the mark with the
alignment tab (D) in the center of the tailgate opening, align
the joint with the tailgate striker (E), and install the
weatherstrip. Make sure the weatherstrip is seated
completely and facing in the direction shown. Make sure
there are no wrinkles in the weatherstrip.
