Segunda Katigbak
•Lived in Lipa, Batangas
-was born in 1863
-Rizal saw her during his visit in his maternal grandmother's place whereas.
-Rizal claimed that he blushes every time Segunda Katigbak sets eye on him.
-Rizal Made pencil sketchers for her.
-Rizal's age is 16 when he met Segunda
-Their relationship was ended when Segunda left before Rizal could declare his love.
Additional information:
•Rizal was only 16 years old when he met Segunda, so most probably, she was his “puppy love.”
They met at the house of Rizal’s grandmother in Trozo, Manila.
•Things did not work out for them because Segunda got engaged. However, this was how Rizal
described their relationship:
“Ended, at an early house, my first love! My virgin heart will always mourn the reckless step it
took on the flower-decked abyss. My illusions will return, yes, but indifferent, uncertain, ready
for the first betrayal on the path of love.”

2. Leonor Valenzuela
•Leonor or “Orang” was 14 years old when he met Rizal. He was a sophomore medical student
at the University of Santo Tomas that time, and Orang was his neighbor.
•Rizal used to write letters for Orang using invisible ink. The love notes can be read only through
the heat emitted by a lamp or candle. His last encounter with Leonor was when he bade her
goodbye before leaving for Spain. There were reports claiming that while courting Orang, Rizal
was also trying to win the heart of his second cousin, Leonor Rivera.

3. Leonor Rivera
•was born in April, 11, 1867
-was the daughter of Antonio Rivera and Silvestra Bauzon.
-was the childhood sweetheart of Jose Rizal
-Leonor Rivera and Rizal first met in Manila when Rivera was only 13 years old.
-Their correspondence began when Rizal left a poem for Rivera saying farewell.
-Rivera was the “greatest influence” in preventing Rizal from falling in love with other women
while Rizal was traveling outside the Philippines.
-Rivera's romantic relationship with Rizal lasted for eight years.
Additional Information:
•Leonor was 13 and Rizal was 18 when they met. She was his second cousin. Their relationship
lasted for 8 years even if Rizal was traveling overseas.
•Leonor served as an inspiration for Rizal that he created the character Maria Clara based on
her.

4. Consuelo Ortega y Rey


•Consuelo Ortega Y Rey was the daughter of Don Pablo Ortiga Y Rey, who was Mayor of Manila
when Maria dela Torre was the governor. While Rizal was in Madrid, he would hang out at Don
Pablo’s house, which became a place where Filipino students would often get together. Through
one of these gatherings, Rizal met Consuelo.
•While Rizal was in Madrid, the pretty Consuelo Ortega fell in love with him and he
compensated her affection with one of his best poems. Consuelo lived in Madrid and her house
was often visited by Rizal and his friends. Rizal backed out before the affair became a serious
romance since he was seriously in love with Leonor Rivera.

5. Seiko Usui
• A Japanese samurai’s daughter
-Usui’s family originally came from Chiba
-Her father was a former samurai who turned to be a businessman that owned a trading store in
Yokohama
-Taught Rizal the Japanese art of painting known as su-mie. She also helped Rizal.
-She had an intimate relationship with Jose Rizal during Rizal’s vacation on Yokohama
-She was 23 years old when she met Rizal.
-She helped Rizal to be accustomed to Japanese culture, she taught him to read and write
Nihongo, and introduced him to Japanese style of painting. She had been a constant comrade of
Rizal.
•The two met in 1888. When the language barrier broke because they both spoke French and
English, their relationship blossomed. However, it only lasted for two months because Rizal had
to leave Japan for San Francisco.

6. Gertrude Beckett
•Just the same year when Rizal and O-Sei-San ended their relationship, he met Gertrude in
London. She was the daughter of his landlord, Charles Beckett.
•Gertrude was madly in love with Rizal that she helped him with his works “Prometheus
Bound,” “The Triumph of Death over Life,” and “The Triumph of Science over Death.”

7. Suzanne Jacoby
•Doctor Jose Rizal was 29 years old when he met Suzanne Jacoby when he went to Belgium in
January 1890 with his friend Jose Albert and left the expensive city of Paris. The lady is the niece
of his new landladies. During his 6-month stay in Brussels, he and Suzanne had a great time
together. They even attended Belgium’s summertime festival of 1890 with its multicolored
costumes, animated floats, and lively crowds.
•In August 1890, he left Belgium and gave the young Suzanne a box of chocolates. And in her
letter she sent him after two months, she stated there that the box of chocolates was left
untouched.
•However, just like his relationship with Beckett, she was just a fling and it was one-sided. And
this is evident to her letters sent to him.

8. Nellie Boustead
•Her nationality is french
-their relationship status is Crazy love triangle, a secret affair.
-Nelly was the mestiza daughter of a Filipina and a wealthy french-english merchant.
-Their love affair unfortunately did not end in marriage.
- It failed because Rizal refused to be converted to the Protestant faith
-Rizal's age is 28 when he met Nelly Boustead.
•Nellie was the girl that almost got Antonio Luna and Rizal into a duel. Rizal met Nellie in
Biarritz, France. Everyone was supportive of their relationship, except Nellie’s mother. Also,
•Nellie wanted Rizal to convert to Protestantism but he refused.
Even if their relationship did not work, the two remained friends. Nellie even wrote a letter for
Rizal before he left Paris.
9. Josephine Bracken
•On August 9, 1876, Josephine Bracken, who was considered as wife of Dr. Jose Rizal, was born
in Victoria, Hong Kong to Irish parents.
• Her complete name is Marie Josephine Leopoldine Bracken.
•Her nationality is Irish
-Rizal was 34 when he met Josephine Bracken.
-Rizal was giving George Tauffer, Josephine's father treatment for his blindness when they met.
-Rizal regarded Josephine as his wife. But 2 years after Rizal was executed, Josephine Bracken
married Vicente Abad.
