kadaşının bilimi daha sosyal alanlarda çalışmak için bıraktıkla
rını söyledi. Bunlar değerlerle ilgili kararlardır ve kadın beynini
bağlantı kurmak ve iletişime geçmek gibi yönlere iten hormon
ların etkileriyle şekillenirler. Az sayıda kadının bilim alanında
çalışmasının ardında yatan gerçeğin, kadın beyninin matemati
ğe ve bilime olan yetkinliğiyle bir ilgisi yoktur. Bu nokta, Sum-
mers'ın gerçekten hatalı olduğu noktaydı. Üst düzey bilimde ve
mühendisliklerle ilgili pozisyonlarda çok az kadın olduğu ko
nusunda haklıydı ama kadınların bu bölümleri yetersizlikleri
nedeniyle seçmediklerini ima etmek ölümcül bir hataydı.
Kadın beyni inanılmaz yeteneklerle donatılmıştır: sosyal ye
tenekler, derin arkadaşlık bağları kurabilmek, yüzleri okumak
konusunda neredeyse psişik bir kapasite ve çıkar çatışmalarını
ortadan kaldırabilme yeteneği. Bütün bunlar kadın beyninin ya
pısında yer alır. Kadınlar bütün bu yeteneklerle doğarken, doğ
ruyu söylemek gerekirse çoğu erkek bunlardan mahrumdur. Er
kekler kendi hormonal dengelerinin şekillendirdiği başka yete
neklerle doğarlar. Ama bu başka bir kitabın konusu.

gelene kadar onun hemen her dönemini gördük. Daha birkaç haf
talıkken Leila önünde beliren her yüzü tanımaya çalışıyordu. Per
sonelim ve ben onunla göz teması kuruyorduk, o da kısa süre son
ra bize gülümsemeye başladı. Birbirimizin seslerini ve yüz ifadele
rini taklit ediyorduk ve bu şekilde onunla bağ kurmak eğlenceliy
di. Bir gün onu beraberimde eve götürmek istedim, özellikle de oğ
lumla aynı deneyimi yaşamamış olduğumuz için.
Bu kız bebeğin bana bakmak istemesinden hoşlanıyordum ve
oğlumun da benim yüzümle bu kadar ilgilenmesini istiyordum. O
ise tam aksi biçimde davranıyordu. Benden başka her şeye bak
mak istiyordu -hareket eden şeylere, ışıklara, kapı kollarına- ama
bana değil. Göz teması kurmak yapılacak ilginç işler listesinin en
alt sıralanndaydı. Tıp fakültesinde bütün bebeklerin karşılıklı ba
kışmaya ihtiyaçları olduğunu öğrenmiştim. Bu, anneyle çocuk
arasında bağ kurmanın önemli adımlarından biriydi. Aylarca oğ
lumda bir şeylerin korkunç şekilde yanlış olduğunu düşündüm. O
zamanlar beyinde cinsiyet tarafından belirlenen farklılıklarla ilgili
fazla bir şey bilinmiyordu. Bütün bebeklerin yüzlere bakmaktan
hoşlandıklan düşünülüyordu ama daha sonra eğitimin bu erken
aşamalarıyla ilgili teorilerin aslında kadınlar temel alınarak hazır
landığı ortaya çıktı. Erkek çocuklar değil, kız çocuklar karşılıklı
bakışmaya açıktı. Kızlar beyinlerindeki iletişim, gözlemleme ve
duygulan işleme merkezini küçülten testosteron akımını yaşamı
yorlardı, bu nedenle de bu alanlardaki yetenekleri geliştirme po
tansiyelleri erkek çocuklardan fazlaydı. Hayatının ilk üç ayında
kız bebeğin göz teması kurma ve bakışma yeteneği %400 oranın
da artıyor, bir erkek bebeğin yüz ifadelerindeki gelişimdeyse bu
süreç içinde hiçbir ilerleme olmuyordu.
Kız bebekler duygusal ifadelere ilgili doğarlar. Bir bakıştan,
dokunuştan, iletişime geçtikleri insanların tepkilerinden anlam
çıkarabilirler. Bu ipuçlarından yola çıkarak değerli olduklarına,
sevildiklerine ya da can sıkıcı olduklarına karar verirler. Yüz

İletişim ve duygusal yeteneklerindeki üstünlüğü kız bebeğin
davranışlarında hemen hissedilir. Yıllar sonra Cara oğlunu kuca
ğına aldığında onun neden kızı Leila gibi hemen sessizleşmediği
ni anlayamamıştı. Bunun daha farklı ve yaygaracı bir karakterin
göstergesi olduğunu zannediyordu. Oysa büyük ihtimalle bu
davranış farklılığını açıklayan en önemli etken, empati kurma ye
teneğini de belirleyen cinsiyet farkıydı. Kız bebek için annesiyle
bağlantıya geçmek, onun hissettiklerini algılamak daha kolaydır.
Kızlar yatıştırıcı davranışlara çok daha erken tepki verir, ağlama
yı ve bağırmayı bırakırlar. Harvard Tıp Fakültesi'nde yapılan bir
çalışmada kız bebeklerin annelerini erkek bebeklerden daha iyi
anladıkları gözlemlenmiştir.
Başka bir çalışma, yeni doğan kızların 24 saatlik olmadan di
ğer bebeklerin stresten kaynaklanan ağlamalarına -v e yüz ifa
delerine- erkek bebeklere kıyasla daha fazla tepki verdiklerini
göstermiştir. Kızlar daha bir yaş gibi erken bir zamanda başka
larındaki gerilim belirtilerine tepki vermeye başlarlar, özellikle
mutsuz ya da acı çeken insanlara tepki verirler. Bir gün kendi

Gözlemleme ve duygusal ipuçlarını yakalama yeteneği saye
sinde, kız çocuğu aslında annesinin sinir sistemini kendine kop
yalar. Sheila bana geldiğinde çocuklarıyla başa çıkabilmek için yar
dımımı istiyordu. İlk kocasından iki kızı vardı: Lisa ve Jennifer. Li-
sa doğduğunda Sheila hâlâ mutluydu ve evliliği yolunda gidiyor
du. Becerikli ve çocuğuna iyi bakabilen bir anneydi. Jennifer doğ

Joseph oyun alanına geldikten kısa süre sonra Leila ağlamaya baş
lıyordu. O yaştaki oğlan çocuklar istedikleri şeyi, ne olursa olsun
almak için harekete geçmekte tereddüt etmeyeceklerdir. Joseph,
Leila'mn oyuncaklarını ne zaman isterse alıyor ve genelde diğer
kızlarla beraber yaptıkları her şeyi bozuyordu. Oğlanlar bunu bir
birlerine sürekli olarak yaparlar çünkü tartışma çıkmasından çe
kinmezler. Risk umurlarında değildir. Rekabet yapılarının bir
parçasıdır. Ve genelde kızların yorumlarını ve emirlerini duymaz
dan gelirler.
Testosteron tarafından şekillendirilen erkek beyni, kadın bey
niyle benzer biçimde sosyal bağlar kurma arayışına girmez. Top
lumsal ayrıntıları algılayamamakla ilgili bozukluklar -otizm spek-
trumları ve Asperger Sendromu gibi- erkeklerde kızlara oranla se
kiz kat daha yaygındır. Bilim insanları artık tek doz X kromozo
muna sahip tipik erkek beyninin (kızlarda iki X vardır) gelişme ça
ğında testosteronla dolarken daha kolay sosyal rahatsızlıklar geliş
tirdiğini düşünüyorlar. Bu tür bozuklukları olan insanlarda ekstra
testosteron ve genler beynin duygusal ve sosyal hassasiyet devre
lerinden bir kısmını yok ediyor olabilir.

İki buçuk yaşma gelindiğinde kızlardaki bebek ergenliği so
na erer ve kızlar daha sakin bir döneme geçerler. Yumurtalıklar
dan gelen östrojen akımı geçici olarak kesilir. Nasıl? Bunu henüz
bilmiyoruz. Ama östrojen ve testosteron seviyelerinin hem erkek
hem de kız çocuklarda çocukluk dönemi boyunca çok düşük ol
duğunu biliyoruz -yine de kızlar erkeklere kıyasla 6-8 kat daha
fazla östrojene tabi olurlar. Kadınlar "arkalarında bıraktıkları kız
çocuğu"ndan söz ettiklerinde, bahsettikleri genelde hayatlarının

Shana'run plaja gitmeyi istediğini haykırdığı gün Lauren, kızı
nın erkek arkadaşı Jeff konusunda endişeliydi, jeff çok zengin ve
çocuklarının her hareketine izin veren bir aileden geliyordu ve on
beş yaşında Shana onunla çoktan cinsel ilişkiye girmişti. Jeff'in ai
lesi evlerinde sevişmelerine izin veriyordu ve Shana bunu hamile
olma ihtimali ortaya çıkıncaya kadar ailesinden saklamıştı. Jeff ve
kızı ayrılacak gibi görünmediklerinden Lauren en doğrusunun ço
cuğu tanımaya çalışmak olduğuna karar verdi. Ve tanıdıkça da on

Hormon salınmaları cici bir kızı rahatlıkla kötü bir kıza çe
virebilir, cinsel rekabet de öyle - ki genç kızlar arasında çok
yaygındır. Ancak bu rekabetin kuralları genç erkekler için ge
çerli olanlardan farklıdır. Genç kızlar gruplar oluşturmaya yö
nelirler, ne var ki bu grupların bir kısmı birbiriyle savaş halin
dedir. Genç kızlar hepimizin de bildiği gibi aşırı acımasız öte
bilirler.
Kadınlar diğer kadınlarla rekabet halindeyken düşmanı aşa
ğı çekmek için dedikodu yaymak gibi daha kurnazca araçlar kul
lanırlar. Bu sayede kimse onları suçlayamaz - "Sana zarar ver
mek istememiştim, özür dilerim." Buna benzer taktikler genç kız
beyninin "varolmanın zorunlu koşulu" olarak gördüğü bağlan
tıların kopartılması riskini en aza indirir. Ancak cinsel rekabet de
varolmanın zorunlu koşullarından biridir.
Yedinci sınıftayken hatırlıyorum da„ çok güzel bir kız vardı; o
kadar güzeldi ki erkeklerin bütün ilgisi ona yöneldiği için diğer

sındaki bağlanma farklılıklarını da aydınlatıyor. Dişi tarlafareleri
için en rahat çiftleşme az stresli ortamlarda gerçekleşiyor. Erkek
tarlafareleri içinse yüksek stresli ortamlarda. Maryland Üniversite-
si'ndeki araştırmacılar, dişi tarlafarelerinin, stresli bir ortama so
kulduklarında eşleştirildikleri erkeklerle çiftleşmediklerini keşfet
tiler. Ancak eğer stres altında olan erkek tarlafaresiyse ilk bulduğu

beş dakikadan daha fazla zaman alır ama insanlarda bağ kurma
fırsatı bu kadar çabuk kapanmaz. Bu benim gibi anestezi, sezer-
yan, erken doğum gibi tatsız bir doğum deneyimi yaşayan kadın
lar için iyi haber. Oğlum doğduğunda -3 6 saatlik kasılmaların,
epidural anestezinin ve morfinin ardından- kendimi garip hisse
diyordum ve ufaklığı görmeye pek de hevesli değildim. Bebeğim
doğar doğmaz yaşamayı beklediğim ani sıcak annelik dalgasını

kadınla ilgili Nick'le kavga etmişlerdi. Sarah, o hafta sonu yeme
ğinde Nick'in kendisinin gözleri önünde kadınla flört ettiğinden
emindi. Kocası tartışmayı kesip odayı terk ettiğinde Sarah'ın bey
ninde boşanma, mal varlıklarının paylaşılması ve çocuğun vela
yetini konu alan, ailesine veda edişini ve şehirden ayrılışını izle
diği bir video kaset dönmeye başlamıştı. Odaklanmakta zorluk
çekiyordu, bir sonraki kavgaya hazırdı ve evliliklerinin parçalan
dığından emindi.
Bu doğru değildi. Nick çok çaba harcıyordu ama tartışmak

Nick böyle hissetmezken Sarah neden korkuyor ve kendisinin
güvende olmadığını hissediyordu? Kadınlar ve erkekler beyinle
rinde güvenlik ve korku konulannda hayattaki deneyimleriyle şe
killenen farklı duygu devrelerine sahiptirler. Güvenlik duygusu
beynin yapısına işlenmiştir. Yapılan taramalar kızların ve kadınla
rın beyinlerinde erkeklerin korku ya da acı karşısındaki tepkileri
ne kıyasla daha fazla hareketlilik oluştuğunu ortaya koyuyor. Ko
lombiya'da yapılan bir araştırmaya göre beyin, neyin tehlikeli ol
duğunu korku kanallarının harekete geçmesi aracılığıyla öğrenir
ve neyin güvenli olduğuna da zevk-ödül devrelerinin harekete
geçmesi sonucu karar verir. Kadınlar acı ve korku karşısında duy
gularını bastırmak konusunda erkeklerden çok daha büyük zorluk
çekerler. İşte bu yüzden Sarah evde tek başına çıldırıyordu.

Hem kadınlar hem erkekler orta yaşa ulaşıp yaşlılığa doğru
ilerlemeye başladıklarında daha fazla yaşam deneyimi edinirler
ve kendilerini daha güvende hissederler. Özellikle erkekler
uzun süredir bastırdıkları duygular da dahil olmak üzere ço
ğunlukla duygularını daha rahat ifade ederler. Ama kadınların
duygusal algılarının, gerçekliği algılayışlarının, tepkilerinin, ha
fızalarının erkeklerinkinden farklı olduğu gerçeğini görmezden

Kısa bir süre sonra Sylvia ve Robert yeni bir evlilik terapisi
seansı için bana geldiler. Çözülmemiş sorunları her ikisinin de
canına tak etmişti. Robert duyduklarına, örneğin, "Kendi kahro
lası yemeğini kendin yap ya da git dışarıda ye. Son kez söylüyo
rum, aç değilim. Şu anda resim yapıyor olmaktan son derece
memnunum ve ara vermek istemiyorum," gibi cümlelerin karı

Beyindeki hormonlar bizi kadın yapan unsurlann bir parça
sıdır. Cinsiyet merkezli devrelere yakıt sağlayan, dişi tavırları ve
yetenekleri ortaya çıkaran onlardır. Menopozda, bu hormonal
yakıt tükendiğinde beynimize ne olur? Östrojene bağlı beyin
hücreleri, devreleri ve nörokimyasallan azalır. Araştırmacı Bar
bara Shenvin, Kanada'da yumurtalıkları alındıktan hemen son
ra östrojen yükleme terapisi gören kadınların hafıza işlevlerinin
eskisi gibi devam ettiğini ama yumurtalıkları alındıktan sonra
östrojen terapisi görmeyenlerin sözel hafızalarında gerileme ol
duğunu keşfetti. Terapi, hafızalarını neredeyse menopoz öncesi
dönemdeki seviyesinde tutuyordu ama yalmzca östrojen terapi
sine hemen başlanan kişilerde. Görünüşe bakılırsa, beynin östro-
jenden tam olarak faydalanabilmesi için arada dar bir zaman
aralığı var.
Östrojenin birçok beyin işlevi konusunda koruyucu etkisi olabi
lir, hatta özellikle beyin damarlarındaki mitokondria -hücrelerin
enerji merkezleri- söz konusu olduğunda. Califomia Üniversite

Yüzyıllar önce, menopoz karşımıza ender olarak çıkıyordu.
Hatta 19. yüzyılın sonu ve 20. yüzyılın başında bile ABD'deki
kadınların ortalama ölüm yaşları kırk beşti - tipik bir kadının
menstrual döngüsünün kesilmesinden iki yıl öncesi. ABD'deki
kadınlar artık âdet dönemleri kesildikten sonra onlarca yıl ra
hatlıkla yaşayabiliyorlar. Ancak bilim, henüz bu demografik de
ğişikliklere uyum sağlayacak biçimde değişmiş değil. Her ne
kadar menopoza giren kadın sayısının artmasıyla (Amerika'da
45 milyon kadın kırk ve altmış yaşları arasında) beraber bu ko
nudaki araştırmalar hızla ilerlemeye başlamışsa da menopozla
ilgili bilgilerimiz hâlâ yeni ve eksik.
Menopozdan sonraki yılları planlamak tarihsel olarak kadın
lar için yeni bir seçenek. Kendi seçimleri olan heyecan verici
projeleri gözlerinde canlandırmak ve hayata geçirebileceklerini
bilmek bu yeni yüzyılda kadınların yaşamlarının en keyif veri
ci kısmı olabilir. Menopoza girdikleri döneme kadar ekonomik
ve bireysel özgürlüklerini kazanmış olabilirler. Kendilerine ze
min oluşturacak bilgileri biriktirmiş olabilir, şimdiye kadar
mümkün olacağını hayal bile etmedikleri ölçüde heyecan verici
seçeneklere sahip olabilirler. Arkadaşım olan bilim kadınların
dan biri, yaşlanma konusunda uzmanlaşmış olan Cynthia Kan
yon, gelecekte kadınların 120 yaşma kadar yaşayabileceklerini
düşünüyor.
Sylvia için menopoz sonrası yıllarını hayal etmek Robert'ı
yeniden değerlendirmek demekti. Robert'la ayrılmalarından iki
yıl sonra yeniden beni görmeye geldiğinde genç kızlık haline
geri döndüğünü, kim olduğunu yeniden keşfetmekten mutlu
olduğunu ve hayallerini yıkmaya yetecek sayıda erkekle çıktık

Şunu bilmek önemli: Projesteron olmaksızın sadece östrojene
dayanan tedavi, sadece histerektomi yaptırmış postmenopoz dö
nemindeki kadınlara uygundur. Hâlâ rahmi olan kadınlara uygu
lanan projesteron içeren hormon tedavileriyle aynı şey değildir.
Arada önemli bir fark var: Projesteron içeren HT, östrojenin rahim
yollarına yığılmasını ve kanser hücreleri oluşturması ihtimalini
engeller. Projesteron, östrojenle birlikte hap olarak ya da vajinal
jel yardımıyla alınabilir. Ancak projesteron aynı zamanda östroje
nin kadın beynindeki bazı olumlu etkilerini engeller. Rahimde, is
tenmeyen hücrelerin büyümesini engellediği gibi beyindeki yeni
bağlantıların da büyümesini engelliyor gibi görünmektedir. So
nuç olarak, beynin projesteron içeren HT'den sağladığı yararlar
çelişkilidir. Eğer bir kadın, rahmi olmadığı için sadece östrojen
kullanabiliyorsa, östrojenin menstrual döngüsünün en iyi zaman
larında yaşadığı bütün nimetlerinden sürekli olarak yararlanabi
lir, hem de PMS'ye yol açan projesteron olmaksızın. Projesteronu
tolere edemeyen ama hâlâ rahmi olan kadınlar rahimlerinde biri
ken hücreleri Açma ve Kazıma (Dilation & Curettage) adlı operas
yonla aldırabilir, hücrelerin yeniden birikmediğinden emin olmak
için de yıllık vajinal ultrasonlar çektirebilirler. Çok düşük miktar
larda östrojen içeren hormon tedavileri gören kadınların hâlâ ra
himleri olsa bile çoğunlukla projesteron kullanmaları gerekmez.
Kadın beyni üzerinde yaşlanmanın belirgin etkilerinin gö
rülmeye başlaması menopozdan yıllar sonrasına denk gelir. Ba
zı hafıza zayıflamaları elli yaş gibi erken bir yaşta başlayabilir
ama bunlar çoğunlukla rahatsız edici ölçüde olmaz. Hormon te
davisi bunu yavaşlatabilir ya da yavaşlatmayabilir. Yaşlanmay
la ilgili süreç çoğunlukla kan miktarının ve vücudun hasarları
onarma yeteneğinin azalınasım da içerir.

Ne yazık ki östrojen kaybı menopoz döneminde beyinde ger
çekleşen tek kayıp değildir. Elli yaşma gelindiğinde birçok kadın
vücudundaki testosteronun neredeyse %70'e yakınını kaybeder.
Bunun tek nedeni menopoza girildiğinde yumurtalıkların testos
teron üretimini azaltmış olması değildir. Kadınların doğurganlık
larının devam ettiği dönemde androjen ve testosteron oranlarının
%70'e yakınını DHEA pre-hormonu adı altında üreten adrenalin
bezleri de üretimlerini büyük ölçüde azaltıp "adrenopoz" adı ve
rilen bir hormonal geçiş sürecini başlatırlar. Menopozdan sonra
adrenalin bezleri azalan üretimleriyle bile olsa kadıniann andro
jen ve testosteronlarının %90'ını tedarik eder. Aslında adrenalin
bezlerindeki bu üretim azalmasını kırklı yaşlarda bazı adrenal
hücreleri öldüğü için hem kadınlar hem de erkekler yaşarlar. Elli
yaşma gelindiğinde erkekler de adrenalin bezlerinden gelen tes
tosteronlarının yansını ve testislerinin gençken ürettiği testostero
nun %60'mı kaybetmişlerdir. Bunun sonucunda erkeklerin de cin
sel istekleri yıllar geçtikçe azalır. Testosteron, beyinde cinsel arzu
nun uyanması için gerekli olduğundan menopoz sonrasında ka
dınlarda testosteron üretiminin azalması kadınların cinsellikle
çok az ilgili olmalanna ya da hiç ilgili olmarrtalarına yol açabilir.
Erkekler, yetişkinliklerinin büyük kısmında kadınlardan on
ile yüz kat arasında değişen miktarlarda daha fazla testosteron
üretirler. Kadınların 20 ile 70 pikogram arasında değişen testos
teron seviyelerine karşı erkeklerinki 300 ile 1.000 pikogram ara
