1. Introduction

For liquid and gas pipelines surge analysis is the study of pressure transients caused by a
change in the piping. This change may be something as simple as a valve closing or
opening, or something more complicated such as a pump, or multiple pumps, starting up
or shutting down, either in a planned or unplanned way.

Without such consideration or analysis work being undertaken unexpected pressure

surges can occur in pipelines which can sometimes lead to catastrophic failure of the
piping, or equipment to which it is attached

SMEC Oil and gas Pakistan has intended to carry out the transient surge analysis of the
7.0 MMTPA white oil pipeline for transportation of Motor Gasoline and HSD (White Oil)
from Machike Storage and Pumping Installation to Thallian Storage and Pumping
Installation and up to Taru Jabba Storage Installation in the Machike-Thallian-tarujabba
White Oil Pipeline

2. Scope

The scope shall be to summarize the results of the transient surge analysis performed
for the Machike-Thallian-tarujabba White Oil Pipeline for the following operations to
identify bottlenecks in the system and provide operational/engineering solutions and
also to estimate the liquid surge volumes to verify the slug handling capacity of the slug
catcher if required:
 Steady State Operations
 Field Data comparison
 Operational Solution
 Turndown & Ramp-up
 Shutdown & Restart
 Pigging
 Engineering Solution - Water separation
Surge analysis should include reviewing and confirming surge analysis report, and
recommending holistic alternatives for mitigating surge pressures. Evaluate adequacy of
pumps for different pressure zones and provide recommendation for any modifications
required to improve pump efficiency, service of pressure zones and operational
flexibility and reliability.

3. Process Description

Frontier Oil Company– 1 (Employer), a company intends to construct and

operate a 7.0 MMTPA white oil pipeline for transportation of Motor Gasoline and
HSD (White Oil) from Machike Storage and Pumping Installation to Thallian
Storage and Pumping Installation and up to Taru Jabba Storage Installation
along with associated facilities and infrastructure
The implementation of the project involves construction of the Project in three
Sections namely
A) Section-1: Machike – Thallian

(a) At Machike, Storage capacity of White Oil Products is as under:

 MS = 14,000 M.Tons x 2 Nos.
 HSD = 16,000 M.Tons x 2 Nos.

(b) Pipeline from Machike to Thallian Dia. 18" x 265 km long:

 Telescopic Design with wall thickness ranges from 7.1 mm to 5.6 mm

(c) Booster and Mainline Pumps

(d) Fire water tank, firefighting pumps, foam bladder type tank with
proportioning system, firewater and foam solution network with hydrant
and monitors.

(e) Alipur Syedan Intermediate Pumping Station includes:

 Pig Launcher and Receiver Facility
 Strainer and Mainline Pumps

(f) Utilities and other associated facilities

B) Section-2: Thallian - Taru Jabba

(a) At Thallian, Storage capacity of White Oil Products is as under:

 MS = 14,000 M.Tons x 2 Nos.
 HSD = 16,000 M.Tons x 2 Nos.

(b) Base Case: Pipeline from Thallian to Taru Jabba Dia. 10" x 172 km long
Telescopic Design with wall thickness ranges from 6.4 mm to 4.8 mm

Alternate Case: Pipeline from Thallian to Taru Jabba Dia. 12" x 172 km long
 Telescopic Design with wall thickness ranges from 6.4 mm to 4.8mm

(c) Mainline Pumps

(d) OMCs Transfer Pumps

(e) Fire water tank, firefighting pumps, foam bladder type tank with proportioning
system, firewater and foam solution network with hydrant and monitors.

(f) Hazro Intermediate Pumping Station includes:

 Pig Launcher and Receiver Facility
 Intermediate Pumping System shall be installed in Phase-2
(g) Utilities and other associated facilities

(h) At Taru Jabba,

 Storage capacity of White Oil Products is as under:
 MS = 8,850 M.Tons x 2 Nos.
 HSD = 16,000 M.Tons x 2 Nos.

 OMCs Transfer Pumps

 Fire water tank, firefighting pumps, foam bladder type tank with proportioning
system, firewater and foam solution network with hydrant and monitors

 Utilities and other associated facilities

C) Section-3: ARL – Thallian

(a) New Pipeline from Thallian to Attock Refinery Limited (ARL) battery limit
approximately 41.5 km long - 4.8 mm thick and Tie-in with existing OMC's pipelines (SPL,
