Unit Intended Learning Outcomes:


1. Describe the nature and functions of verbal
and non-verbal communication in various and
multi-cultural contexts.
2. Apply ethical principles in the communication
process.
UNIT 1 TOPIC 1: COMMUNICATION MODELS
In this lesson, you will be exposed to the different ways of looking at communication. This
lesson will give you a good understanding of why communication should be studied in the
tertiary level and the potential of the course helping you transform yourself and the society.
This will serve as a good introduction to the different processes, principles and dimension of
communication that you should be aware of, when you start communicating in the academe
and the professional world.

what communication is based on your understanding.
Select 5 main concepts you can relate to communication
and indicate why communication is essential in our daily life

DIRECTIONS:The facilitator will divide the class into 5 small


groups and explain each communication model assigned to
you. Your task is to illustrate the model through a skit,
which shows both successful communication and failed
communication. (click folder UNIT 1 for rubrics)

Assessment: Pop quiz about the models of communication.


UNIT 1 TOPIC 2: COMMUNICATION ETHICS
In the previous lesson you have read and learned a short introduction about communication.
In this lesson, you find out that there are different guidelines in communicating in an ethical
manner.

word ethics? In your own words what does COMMUNICATION
ETHICS mean?

UNIT 2: GLOBALIZATION AND COMMUNICATION


This lesson focuses on the implications of globalization in
communication. You will read essays and expositions that will provide
you with an awareness of the role and status of English as a global
language, the notion of World Englishes, and the need for standard
forms in academic and professional writing and the importance of
culturally sensitive and bias-free language when communicating with
people from different cultures and discourse communities.
