1.1 Introduction
The Digital Governor System (DCS-8800e) is a complete package which fulfills all
tasks for speed governing of low-speed, long-stroke diesel engines.
The main purpose of the DGS 8800e system is to control the position of the engine fuel
servo, in order to maintain an engine speed equal to a reference setting. The system is
composed of two separate and self-contained subsystems, the speed Regulating
Function, and the fuel Actuator Function.
The DGS 8800e performs computerized handling of all measurements and control
signals. It includes panel push-button flexibility to select, adjust, and test system
perfonnance. Movement of the fuel rack is done by an electric actuator, with a 3 phase
brushless servomotor as the power medium.
The speed setting may be from three different locations, usually the remote control
system (AutoChief 4 or AutoChief 7), local control panel, and control room back-up
panel (optional).
The system may be fitted to both fixed pitch and controllable pitch propeller systems
(FPP and CPP systems).
The system responds to slow-down and shut-down signals from external safety systems.
Fuel-saving features, such as load limiting functions, are included.
The speed pick-up sensors are of an inductive type, mounted towards engine gearwheel.
They are completely duplicated for increased system reliability.
Engine scavenging-air (charge-air) pressure is measured to be able to limit the fuel
injection according to engine manufacturers recommodation.
For CPP systems, the pitch value is measured to compensate for variable propeller load.
The DSU (Digital Servo Unit) need 220 VAC 3 phase power.
The Actuator Feedback Transducer is a high resolution absolute encoder with
contactless displacement to improve system reliability.
This configuration drawings shows the DGS-8800e with the belonging accessories.

Commanding input signal either from remote control system, local control panel,
and control room back-up panel (optionally).
The operator may reduce the maximum allowed speed by programming the
command Limiting Function.
System control inputs automatically select "failure-mode" commanding reference,
such as slowdown or back-up RPM.
Rate Limiting Function enables the operator to restrict engine acceleration or
retardation.
Critical Speed Discrimination results in switch transfer of speed reference signal
through the barred range.
Start - Stop Function automatically selects fuel-setting reference, with automatic
transfer to speed setting reference.

MAN B&W spec. Ident. No. 3090229-9. Bated 16. Jun. 2001 and LLOI-35(Licence
Letter. Dated 2 7.Sept.2001 and SLOI -xxx/HRI(Seewice Letter. Dated October,2001)
(MAN B&W continuos efforts to minimise the Lub.oil dosage at nominal load, extra
lubrication during manoeuvring and load change becomes more important, as
accomplished with the LCD(Load Change Dependent) function.
However some combinations of ship types and sizes in relation to the engine type and
lay out have revealed that unintended triggering of the LCD function can occur, due to
fuel rack hunting because of the ship's movement at sea. Such unintended LCD
activation may result in costly over-consumption of cylinder lub.oi1.
This can be prevented by readjusting the LCD parameters, such as lowering the reset
time(tr : default 10 sec.) or increasing the index band(lr : default 10%)
Another way of preventing unintended LCD function triggering, on ships where the
engine governor system has a special indextload mode, is to switch from RPM mode to
index or load mode. However, in some cases unintended LCD function triggering is
difficult to prevent without jeopardizing the LCD function during manoeuvring.
MAN B&W have therefore changed our standard LCD function from being triggered
by actual index variation, to a physical change of Telegraph handle position. This
changes the LCD function so as to be triggered only by intended load changes.
The modification requires some changes of the LCD control system, and possibly also
changes of the telegraph system. The required modification on the actual vessel
depends on the propeller type, and whether the LCD function is incorporated in an
electronic governor. For vessels with fixed pitch propeller and electronic governor,
the modification is, in most cases, limited to change of the governor software related to
the upgrade LCD function.)
