In the Gospels of Matthew and Luke,
there is an account of Jesus meeting
three individuals who each come to Him
declaring their desire to be his disciple
and to follow Jesus. Sadly, however, up-
on hearing the costs of following Jesus
each individual turns away. The first was
a teacher boldly claiming that he will fol-

low “wherever you go” (Luke 9:57). Jesus
replied that where he is going will not be
comfortable, for the “son of Man has no
place to lay his head” (Luke 9:58). One
comes to Jesus but is willing to follow
only if he can go and bury his father
(Luke 9:59). Still another comes to Jesus
and also places a condition on his follow-

ship, stating to the effect that “but I must
first go and say goodbye to my fami-
ly” (Luke 9:61). To each one, Jesus re-
plies that to be true disciples they must
follow the understanding that they cannot
have matters go their preferred way.
There can be no compromise with Je-
sus...there can be no “but let me first go
back…” To the heart of the matter, Jesus
replied, “No one who puts a hand to the
plow and looks back is fit for service in
the Kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:62) To be
of service for the Lord God, we cannot be
“plowing the field” and at the same time
be looking back at our old ways, our pre-
ferred ways, our comfortable ways with

our hearts set on our opinions and the
ways of the world. Such compromised
following will not result in furrows that are
true, and no harvest will be yielded by a
“but let me first go back disciple”.

motion to initiate the process of church
adoption by Warren Baptist Church in Au-
gusta, Georgia. This adoption process will
be responsible for forming a covenant
between Belvedere First Baptist Church
and Warren Baptist Church that, under
the leadership of Warren Baptist Church,
will be devoted to sharing the Gospel of
Jesus Christ and building the Kingdom of
God in the Belvedere-North Augusta
community. I anticipate that this process
will at times be uncomfortable and there
will be tempations to “look back” and
push hard on our opinions about how
things ought to be. However, my brothers
and sisters in Christ, now is the time to
trust in the Lord with all our hearts and
not lean on our own understanding
(Proverbs 3:5). Now is the time to look
forward in hope with our eyes fixed on
Jesus Christ and to be fit servants for the
Kingdom of God...Now is the time to be
true disciples that FOLLOW with no
strings attached.

When you use the Fellowship Hall,
please be sure to close the kitchen
door and the pass through and
leave the small air conditioner run-
ning when you leave in an effort to
keep the kitchen cool so that there
is not so much strain on the appli-
ances. Of course, this only applies
to the months that we need to use
air conditioning.
