Air is drawn over the oven sides and around the back, where it enters the ‘oven through the louvers at the upper portion of the chassis back. At this point the air from the sides and the bottom mix. This air is pulled through the blower, where It passes through the air exhaust and exits through the upper vent trim. Airpasses through the oven door by two routes. The first route is through the bottom door slots where airrises by natural convection. It passes between the two outermost door glass panels, and exits through the top slots in the door. The ‘second route is through the bottom of the door where forced convection air enters. Itis pulled through the door, and exits through the slots in the upper part of the door liner, This air Is pulled into the blower where it passes through the exhaust duct and exits through the upper vent trim. The purpose of the convection fan Is to circu- late hot air inside the oven cavity. It does not evacuate the air from the cavity, which means that the air flow for convection and non-con- vection models is the same. THE THERMAL SENSOR, FUSE, & SWITCH There are two thermal sensors on the oven. The thermal sensors operate as follows: * Oven Shutdown Sensor—This thermal limiter is located on the rear panel at the top center of the oven. It opens L2 to the oven if the temperature at the rear panel exceeds 160°C/320°F. This sensor is a 1-time, non-resettable safety device. BACK OF OVEN + Thermal Fuse (Double Ovens Only}— Protects the control panel area if the temperature exceeds 101°C/214°F, if the fuse opens, It shuts down the entire unit (no clock, etc.). The thermal fuse is connected between the electronic con- trol and the main wire harness, and is 1-time, non-resettable, KITCHENAID DOUBLE OVENS ELECTRON CONTROL, WHIRLPOOL DOUBLE OVENS ELECTRONIC CONTROL, THERMALRUSE pp A ‘Gietecraowt: Bonrace Boat onantess * Thermal Switch—Locks the oven door ifthe oven temperature exceeds 304°C/ 800"F during any non-self-clean mode. The thermal switch also acts as a door lock backup during the self-clean cycle, Built-In Electric Wall Oven Service Manual — LIT 4317164 THE OVEN DOOR LATCH ASSEMBLY The door latch solenoid operates on a 120-volt dc pulse from the electronic contro! board. When the solenoid plunger is retracted, the oven door is in the “unlocked” position. When the solenoid plunger Is extended, the oven dooris in the “locked” position, When the latch sensing switch Is open, the control senses that the door is “unlocked.” When the latch sensing switch closes, the control senses that the door is locked. The latch sensing switch, mounted on the solenoid bracket, is in the N.O. (normally-open) position. During the selt-clean cycle, the control board sends a 120-volt de pulse to the solenoid windings, which extends the plunger (pushes it out), and moves the latch arm to lock the ‘even door. The movement of the arm also actuates the latch sensing switch arm and closes it. When the self-clean cycle is over, the control board sends a 120-voit de pulse to the solenoid, the plunger is retracted (pulled in), the latch arm releases the door, and the sensing switch opens.
