Module 2
Life and Works of Rizal
Introduction
In this lesson, we will identify the characteristic of a healthy personality that will ensure
the development of every Filipino citizen. This chosen healthy personality characteristic could
guarantee the development of other good personality characteristics that the Filipinos have.
Celebrating good, unique Filipino values
The celebration of Filipino Values Month in November, pursuant to Proclamation No.
479 issued on October 7, 1994, is an effective measure to create moral awakening and national
consciousness on unique, positive, and genuine values held important by the Filipino people in
their daily lives.
Anchored on four pillars – makaDios (pro-God), makatao (pro-people), makabayan (pro-
country), and makakalikasan (pro-nature), these values mirror the country’s rich tradition and
cultural heritage, Filipino values are instilled early in life. They are developed from the people’s
direct experiences with others, particularly with parents, teachers, relatives, and friends.
Positive values, especially respect for man’s dignity and honor, make Filipinos productive,
responsible, and law-abiding.
Values formation starts in the family (such as kindness), in spiritual life (piety),
relationship with others (generosity), in the workplace (resourcefulness), and in the community
(respect for the law). Commonly held values such as being helpful and hospitable unite families,
indigenous peoples, societies, and nations.
The family is at the forefront of instilling values among young Filipinos in the home.
Children learn to say “po” and “opo” to older people and to kiss their hands as a sign of respect.
The Philippines is a family-centered nation; it shows in the care given to children, the generosity
towards kin in need, and in the great sacrifice for family welfare. Seldom do Filipinos send their
elders to nursing homes; they care for them especially in their twilight years.
Bayanihan (volunteerism), utangnaloob (debt of gratitude), sarilingsikap (self-reliance),
and pakikisama (comradeship) are strong among Filipinos. Schools and institutions reinforce
the promotion of values education by providing opportunities for the youth to impart to others
the values they learn at home and in their assimilation with peers and superiors.
Values that nations and individuals hold sacred distinguish them from others. Filipinos are
known globally for their values; love of God, country, and family; diligence and hard work;
regard for personal honor and dignity; compassion, generosity, adaptability, loyalty to a friend
or benefactor, respect and care for the elderly. Interaction with peoples of various cultures
helps them develop a strong work ethic, patience, filial piety, and business acumen. With these
values guiding them, Filipinos are able to cope with the vicissitudes of life.

Introduction
Development of positive self-concept is important. It leads into a healthy personality
and good characteristic as a Filipino citizen. Realization and discussion of the importance in
having a positive self-concept is the goal of this lesson.
Self-concept
Self-concept is a set of beliefs about one’s personal qualities and typical behaviour.
Moretti and Higgins (1990) stated that: “when people live up to their personal standards (ideal
selves), they experience high/positive self-concept; when they don’t meet their own
expectations, their self-concept suffers.” Harter (1993) said that: “the foundations for high and
low self-concept appears to be laid early in life.” For this reason, psychologists have focused
much of their attention on the role of parenting in self-concept development. Indeed, there is
ample evidence that personal involvement, acceptance, support, and exposure to clearly defined
limits have marked influence on their children self-concept. The nature of man’s self-evaluation
has profound effects on his thinking process, emotion, desire, values and goals. It is the single
most important key to his behavior; therefor, his becoming an ideal Filipino citizen who is
socially concerned, patriotic, productive, and morally upright is dependent on his having a
positive or good self-concept. “Colonial mentality” (preference for foreign ideas and goods),
“hiya” (shyness or unexplained humility) “inggit” (envy for another’s good fortune) among
Filipinos are contributory factors to the Filipinos’ obvious low self-concept which probably
hinder their development into ideal Filipino citizens who could help in nation-building.

Introduction
At the end of this lesson, we should be able to identify important traits and virtues of Dr.
Jose Rizal. We will also examine carefully Dr. Rizal’s important traits and virtues in comparison
with our own traits and virtues, so that, we can decide if Dr. Rizal’s important traits and virtues
are worth emulating. As a result, we could relate the importance of Rizalian traits and virtues to
the formation of an ideal Filipino citizen, and to becoming a successful professional. ,.m
Rizalian Traits and Values
Rizalian traits and values are considered by a good number of the current young and
middle-aged Filipinos as “old fashioned.” They usually associate these with “nerd” or with the
“all work and no play” type of persons. For them, their ideal person is described as
“tunaynalalaki” or “macho,” “walanginuurungan,” “maabilidad” and as a song goes,
“maginooperumedyobastos.” It is really quite different to try to be like Rizal in a period and

Module 2

society with different standards. People tend to look askance at anyone who tries to do heroic or
who declares that he wants to be like Rizal. Revisiting the traits and virtues of Dr. Rizal is
therefore recommended for the Filipino youth in order to rekindle the latent patriotism with
them. Being like Rizal is an act which requires brains, determination, courage to be different,
and most of all, a lot of heart. Although the country in no longer under foreign rules or
dictatorship, Filipinos still have to be Rizal-like in order to progress as a nation. Corruption,
human rights violations, poor quality of education, lawlessness in some part of the country,
oppression of the poor and the marginalized members of society, and others must be remedied
if the Philippines wants to improve its third-world country status. Only individuals with Rizal’s
traits and virtues could pull this country out of this “quagmire.”

Assessment:10 pts.
Examine carefully Dr. Rizal’s important traits and values, compare them with your own
traits and virtues, and decide if you would like him to be your role model.

Introduction:
At the end of this lesson, we should be able to identify or recognize that man is a social
being. Feel that, as a social being, we must be concerned with our neighbors’ welfare and
identify the “others” in our lives. As what the saying goes, “No man is an island,” that we should
consider everyone as a family. Along with this lesson, is also to admire Dr. Rizal’s undying desire
and willingness to serve his country men and emulate his love and concern for his county and
fellow Filipinos.
Kanya-kanya Mentality
The “kanya-kanya” or “to each his own” mentality has influenced many Filipinos into
alienating themselves from others. It is not uncommon to hear about antagonism between the
rich and the poor, the strong and the weak, the Christians and the Muslims, the rightists and the
leftists, and this results in man against its nature as a social individual who should be willing to
love and serve others even if they do not belong to his own group. While it is true that love for
and service to others are part of God’s plan of creation, these the same gifts could also be
sources of misery, pain, cruelty, injustice, and oppression, if these will be directed to one’s own
circle of friends only. Water, when contaminated with poison, can be source of death instead of
life to those who drink it. The contamination of man’s life natural ability to love and serve
others, with jealousy, pride, rivalry, prejudice, ignorance, and misunderstanding leads to one’s
refusal to be socially concerned and responsible for those who do not belong to his “in-group,”
his family members, friends, or those belonging to the same social strata.

Introduction
We will distinguish the difference between positive love of self and negative love of self.
We will also identify and explain the root cause of present-day problems and relate Rizal’s
positive love of self with his desire to help his fellow Filipinos. Consequently, this desire can be
applied in the present days.
Love of Self
Self love forms the foundation of your single, most important relationship - that with
yourself. The strength of all your other relationships is exactly equal to the strength of that
foundation. though, and you will find that at its very centre is the command to love yourself.
Positive self love is built ourselves, before entering into a relationship and independent
of the relationship, throughout its duration. Negative self-love uses others. When we only “self
love” in the negative way, we enter into relationships based on how they make us feel. We “love”
others for the pleasure they give us, such as beauty. We look for people to build us up, make us
feel good. Self-love using others centers on our needs. We may “decide” to love them, but that
decision is based first on “what’s in it for me?”

Module 2
Life and Works of Rizal
Jose Rizal is said to have first expressed his sense of nation, and of the Philippines as a
nation separate from Spain, as a young student in Manila.  In his memoirs as a student, later
published as Reminiscences, he spoke of the time spent in his sophomore year at the Ateneo as
being essentially the same as his first year, except that this year, he felt within himself the
stirrings of “patriotic sentiments” and of an “exquisite sensibility”1.  He might have been only
referring to the sense that the Philippines, was a colony of Spain, and as such, the Philippines
was a part of Spain.  If this were the case, his patriotism was therefore directed toward Spain for
being the Philippines’ mother country.  Seen in another light, these words may have evidenced
Rizal’s moment of epiphany, his own portent of a future time when he would awake to the
tragedies that were the lot of his fellow indios, the rightful heirs of the Filipinas their
motherland.
No matter how rich and powerful we become, we remain unsatisfied. Greed could be
likened to a bottomless pit which immerses us in a network of delusions and a series of
unrealistic dreams which cloud our decision-making ability; wrong becomes right and right
becomes good.

the Law assert that family planning and sexual education consistent with one’s own beliefs and
moral convictions is exercising one’s freedom to choose. If the basis of universal value is true and

Introduction
At the end of this exercise, we should be able to distinguish the difference between
proactive behaviour and reactive behaviour. Do a self-evaluation to determine whether we are
proactive or reactive. Dr. Rizal was a proactive person, that’s why his love to his country was
undying. He never turned his back to his fellow Filipinos during the cruelty of the colonizers. If
we want positive changes to happen in our environment, we must emulate Dr. Rizal’s proactive
behaviour and make proactive choices in different situations.
Proactive vs. Reactive
First of all, one has to be “PROACTIVE”. Rizal’s accomplishments in spite of his exile
exhibited this habit of being proactive. Being “proactive” says that you are the creator, the
person in charge. Then, the fulfillment is the execution of one’s mental creation. Jose Rizal was
well focused to his mission or so-called “right end”. It seems that he had a timetable in his mind
when to do the “right act”. He did not let himself become influenced by the urgings of the
Katipuneros who wanted to launch a physical revolt against the Spaniards. He said the Filipinos
were not yet ready. Reactive people are often affected by their physical environment. If the
weather is good, they feel good. If it isn’t, it affects their attitude and performance. Proactive
people carry their own weather with them.
A large number of Filipinos seem to be infected by a contagious virus called “victimitis.”
Such people believe that the government owes them something, that the world, in general, is a
cruel place to live in. They fail to recognize that their attitude is the problem. They react
adversely to situations that they feel affect them negatively. Such reactive people are easily
offended, blame others, complain, get angry, utter curse words, wait for things to happen, and
act only when they are force to. Reactive persons do not bother to think and weight things
before they act. In everyday life, reactive language includes the following: “It’s your fault,”
“That’s not fair,” “That’s just the way I am,” “There’s nothing I can do,” “I can’t.” When people use
such relative language, they unwittingly give power to someone else. They no longer have
power over their emotions or reactions.

Introduction:
In this lesson, we will define terms “creativity,” “productivity,” and “progress.” Rizal was
a creative person, he used a different way in fighting for the democracy of the country by his
creative mind and heart through writings. To be able to become creative and productive just
like Rizal, we must develop creativity and accept that if we want progress in our country, we
must have Dr. Rizal as a role model of a creative and productive person.
Creativity
The greatest asset of our country is its people; however, it is obvious the little is being
done by official of our government and the public sector to truly harness the tremendous
creative potential of our people. The prevailing “colonial mentality” in our midst has caused
many Filipinos to be blind flowers of the thinking, the technology, the fashion, and the ways of
the western world. Thus, we are losing or forgetting our true heritage, our creativity,

Module 2
Life and Works of Rizal
imagination, values, and tradition as a people. If a large number of our people begin to think like
everybody else does, there will be very little progress. It, therefore, will not be surprising if we
will continue to overrun by the more progressive, creative countries. Surely, this will result of
our being left behind. As children, we, Filipinos, were curious; we tried to observe and see how
things worked. We learned to do things by actually doing and experiencing them. We were not
afraid to experiment. But as we grew older, we began to love the familiar and routine ways. We
reasoned out that it is much easier to function when we can anticipate how things will go
instead of being surprised all the time. Somewhere along the way, we began to fear, even dislike
experimenting, and the necessary result of this is the loss of our creativity, not only as
individuals but also as a nation.

Time Activity

Introduction
At the end of this lesson, the students should be able to recall their experiences related
to time management and evaluate if they are procrastinators. They should also be aware that
giving importance to their activity could help them become successful in life. They will conclude
from available supporting evidences that Dr. Rizal practiced time management and they will
suggest ways on how to overcome mismanagement of time.

Module 2
Life and Works of Rizal
Time Management
A regular day typically goes like this for the young: they get up early if their classes start
at 7:00 AM, take a hurried bath and breakfast, then they are off to school. In school, they attend
their lecture and laboratory classes, interact with peers, study in the library, tinker with their
school computers, eat at fast-food canteens, hang out with friends either to continue studying or
to go to the mall, attend to errands assigned to them by their parents, go home, watch
“telenovelas” or again surf the Internet with the use of their computers, eat dinner, chat with
friends through the computer, cell phones or landlines, cram for a test scheduled on the next
day, do homework assigned by their teachers, and have a late snack before going to sleep. With
so many things to do every day and more activities with friends and family members during the
weekends, young Filipinos just cannot decide on their priorities. Some are overwhelmed by the
many tasks that they have to do, and to relieve their tensions or stress, they learn to
procrastinate; they would not even begin a task until it becomes urgent.

Introduction
At the end of this lesson, the students should be able to distinguish the differences
between fair practices and unfair practices and give examples of prevalent unjust practices in
their surroundings. They should be able to compare present unjust practices with those
observed during Dr. Jose Rizal’s time. They will trace and explain the root cause of injustice and
unfairness in Philippine society.
Fairness and Justice
In the early 19th century in the United States, women could not legally vote, but they
fought back against this injustice and eventually won voting rights. The word comes from a
Latin phrase that literally means “not right,” and injustice is the opposite of justice, which is a
fair and righteous act. Injustice can be general or specific, like the injustice suffered by poor
people everywhere, or an individual act of injustice committed by some unkind person
Placard-bearing rallyists’ usual complaints include the following: unjust labor practices,
unjust price increases, unfair taxes, and unfair justice system. We witness groups of rallyists
demonstrating in the streets for various reasons. Though they have different reasons for
demonstrating, their demand for justice is common. Anyhow, it cannot be denied that some of
these organized rallies are also unjust because of the self-serving motives of the organizers.
Some rallyists do not even know what they are fighting for; for some do not know the real
meaning of justice or fairness.Corruption in the government had its origins during the time of
the ancient Filipinos.  These were exacerbated by the abuses of the Spanish friars and officials
with the onset of the colonial rule. Jose Rizal, our foremost hero, vehemently condemned and
exposed these abuses and cruelties in his two novels the Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo.

It is a fact that justice is the first demand of good governance, not only in public and
private offices, but also in the family. A child’s notion of fairness and justice is learned through
interactions with family members. Thus, if the justice system in their homes is not clear, they
grow up to be confused individuals who do not know what is right and what is wrong. Their
distorted values cause them to become unfair or unjust adults.

Introduction
At the end of this lesson, the students should be able to define the term “self-discipline”
and give examples of lack of self-discipline among Filipinos. They will trace and explain the root
cause of self-discipline in Philippine society. They should be able also to realize that Dr. Jose
Rizal is a good model of a person with self-discipline and give possible solutions to the Filipino’s
lack of self-discipline.
Self-discipline
The traffic jam which results from driver’s violation of traffic rules, from pedestrians’
refusal to use the sidewalks, the designated bus and jeepney stops, and pedestrian lanes are the
best examples of the Filipino’s lack of self-discipline. Other examples are the garbage piles on
the streets, dirty public toilets, refusal to pay proper taxes, the Filipino males urinating on the

city wall, and graft and corruption. Some say that Filipinos have “damage culture” because of
their lack of discipline. Many Filipinos do not know the meaning of discipline, although this
word is often heard from parents and grandparents.
The call of our times is self-discipline and the best way to respond to it is to start with
ourselves. Imbibing the principle that human life is one big task of discipline, all Filipinos must
know its real meaning and proper way to enforce it. It cannot be denied that one of the causes of
the socioeconomic, political and moral upheavals that we encounter is not knowing what
discipline is. The knowledge of discipline is, therefore, one of the keys to progress and positive
changes in our society.
Assessment: 10 pts.
Trace and explain the root cause of lack of self-discipline among Filipinos.

Introduction
At the end of this lesson, the students should be able to explain how faith in God
affects the development of hope and optimism among Filipino citizens. They should realize
that the destiny of the Philippines depends upon its citizen’s hope and optimism. They will
conclude from available supporting evidence that Dr. Rizal had faith in God and suggest
ways of counteracting feelings of hopelessness and pessimism among Filipino citizens.
God and Nation
Every day, newspapers carry news about entrenched and widening social
inequality, anemic and erratic economic development, injustice, oppression, violation of
human rights that occur with unacceptable frequency, and widespread problems on illegal
drugs and violence. This depressing narration of events in the country has brought feelings
of hopelessness and pessimism among many Filipinos. The flaws in our democracy have
become deeply rooted in the Filipino psyche and have resulted in a “national inferiority
complex” or a lack of pride in being Filipino. Recent data from leading newspapers reported
that around 3,000 Filipinos per day leave the Philippines to work in other countries to look
for greener pastures.
This scenario, therefore, calls for a reawakening of faith in God among Filipinos,
as this will also reawaken hope and optimism among them and move them to take positive
action. True faith in God and not “bahalana” will save us. We, Filipinos, feel downtrodden
because we have allowed ourselves to be downtrodden. Only the restoration of hope and
trust in God and our pride in being Filipinos could cure the ills of our society and redirect
our nation’s fate.
This feeling of helplessness and pessimism needs to be overcame. A
reawakening of faith in God will definitely restore the Filipino’s hope and optimism and will
move them to take positive action. With faith in God comes hope and optimism, and with
hope and optimism comes positive action. Positive action translates to pride in being
Filipinos. Pride in being Filipinos should enable this nation to redirect its fate.
Assessment:10 pts.
Explain how faith in God’s will could help develop hope and optimism among Filipinos?

hinders the Philippines’ progress. They should be able to realize why Filipinos must love
their country.
Love of country
Filipinos’ “colonial mentality” or love for anything imported-products, fashion, movies,
even franchised food chains and coffee shops are very noticeable among the young and old
alike. Foreign fads are blindly followed. Migration to the United States and other foreign
countries is almost always in the plan of Filipino college graduates, skilled workers, and
entertainers. Speaking English with an American accent is admired, so balikbayan Filipinos
who speak in that manner easily land well-paying jobs in television stations as hosts of talk
shows or as newscasters. All these seem to indicate the Filipinos’ lack of pride in being
Filipinos, which may sadly lead to lack of patriotism, and which, in turn, may lead to graft
and corrupt practices, unconcern for the common good, and unwillingness to serve the
community without reward, which may ultimately lead to lack of national progress.
Promoting patriotism among all Filipino citizens is a must if we want to see social and
economic progress in our country. We need, very badly, to get every Filipino to think of and
seriously care about the Philippines. Every citizen of our country must be able to identify
her or his personal interest with the welfare and a long term development of our
motherland.

Life and Works of Rizal

Introduction

At the end of this lesson, the students should be able to differentiate the terms “win-
win,” “lose-win,” and “lose-lose”. They should give the positive effects of having a win-win
attitude and negative effects of lose-win, win-lose, lose-lose attitude. They will suggest
creative ways of turning lose-win situations to win-win and realize that a win-win attitude is
needed by Filipino citizens for the Philippines’ progress.

Win-win
Everybody loves a winner. This, therefore, drives many Filipinos to be obsessed with
winning. It is said that in Philippines, nobody admits to being a loser in local or national
elections. The defeated candidates usually insist that they won; however, they were cheated
by their opponents. Being a loser in court cases, in games of chance, in love relationships,
and others could lead to violence or bloodshed. Some losers seek revenge because of their
strong desire to win at all costs.
In most games and contest, there can only be one winner. However, in the game of life,
there could be two or more winners if the attitudes of the parties involved are positive.
Transactions that end up in win-win situations where all parties benefits and everybody
wins are possible. Wining is the result of having a winner’s mind and a winning, positive
attitude, combined with persistence and determination to convert even seemingly losing
situations into winning ones. A winner says “I can do it” while a loser says “I can’t.”
Assessment. 10 pts.
How can a win-win attitude of Filipino citizens be beneficial to the Philippines progress?

Introduction
At the end of this lesson, the students should be able to define the term “leadership”.
They should be able to accept that leadership qualities must be developed in order to become an
agent for nation-building. They will recognize that Dr. Jose Rizal had leadership qualities that
must be emulated. Finally, they should be able to evaluate if they have leadership that could be
developed and enumerate means by which they could develop their leadership potentials.
Leadership
Philippine history books tell us that ours is a history of countless, unfinished revolutions
and change of leader. Leaders of each generation have sacrificed themselves in historic
struggles for “kalayaan,” “karapatangPantao,” “Katarungan,” “LubosnaKasarinlan,” and
“KaginhawaangPangkalahatan,” but it seems that their sacrifices have been in vain. After
innumerable victims, martyrs, heroes and heroines, and changes of leadership, we are now
confronted by a nation that is in the brink of despair at the meager results we have secured thus
far. Social inequality is widening, economic development is too slow, and injustice and violation
of human rights occur with unacceptable frequency. Our political life lurches from crisis to crisis
as we seek salvation from leader to leader, who, in spite of their election-time promises, fail to
deliver the desired social progress.

Module 2
Life and Works of Rizal
Rizal was admired for being a good leader. He gained the respect of his colleagues in the
Propaganda Movement like Marcelo H. del Pilar who was once his tough rival for the leadership
of the organization. As a leader, Rizal was transformational, charismatic, visionary, and most
importantly, incorruptible.  He displayed a kind of leadership that was not motivated by
personal interest but the willingness to sacrifice oneself for the good of the majority which he
described in his novels as the national sentiment.
Leaders who have wisdom, compassion, high moral standards, inner strength, and
courage will be essential to achieve and elusive dream of Filipinos to become truly free and
progressive as a nation. Authentic leaders must emerge and be the key to radical social
transformation. We expect our leaders to establish high standards of personal integrity,
honesty, and excellence; however, we, too, must commit ourselves to the adherence to these
same high standards.
Assessment. 10 pts.
Suggest some means by which you could develop your leadership potentials. How could
you help achieve true freedom and progress in the country?

Introduction
At the end of this lesson, the students should be able to define the terms “mission,”
“vision,” “objectives,” and “goals” and state their mission, vision, objective, and goals in life. They
should accept that true fulfilment, success, and happiness in life would be easier to attain if they
“begin with the end in mind” and realize that Dr. Jose Rizal also had a personal mission and
vision in life and finally enumerate the advantages of having a personal mission and vision in
life to them as individuals, as family members, and as Filipino citizens.
Mission and Vision
Chaotic situations in one’s personal life, in families, the neighborhood, and in the
government usually happened because of lack of planning and direction and because of not
having a clear picture of where they want to go and of what they want to attain. The paths that
an individual chooses can affect her or his life forever. In other words, we need to be clear about
what we want to accomplish as the goal of our lifetime.
This picture is where proper orientation comes in and where a good value system fits in.
with positive values, we seek only the good things through genuine service to others, in ways
that use our talents and enable us to make a positive difference, not only in our personal life but
also in the lives of the people we touch.
Mission, vision, objective, goals, and direction are very important. If you think they are
beyond the present and decide on what direction you want your life to go it is more than likely
that each step you take will get you closer to what you want to attain. Our vision and mission
will come back to our minds again and again, even to haunt us when things go wrong due to
having neglected them. Indeed, the crises in our personal and national lives mind us how
relevant they are. Mission, vision, and direction are features of both good personal and national
governance.

Assessment: 10 pts.
Try to envision yourself 20 years from now. What do you want to be? What are you good
at? What are your interests?
