B.Sc. (Hons) Degree Program Course: Geometric Optics Code: PHS 207
DUE DATE: 21st June. 2021 ATTEMPT ALL
Student Assignment as Part of the Continues Assessment towards the final Grade.

1. Does light travel at the same speed in different medium? Give your definition on the
refractive index?
2. What are reflective and refractive laws?
3. How to determine the signs of the object distance, image distance and curvature
radius?
4. Draw a ray diagram to show refraction of light in a Triangular Prism for a Prism of
higher value of n than the ambient n
5. An object is located 80 cm to the left of a convex mirror of radius 50 cm. Compute
the following:
a. the power of the mirror,
b. the position of the image and
c. its magnification.
6. To save expenses, you would like to buy the shortest mirror that will allow you to
see your entire body. Should the mirror be
a. Half your height
b. Two-thirds your height
c. Equal to your height draw ray diagram to support your claims.
7. What is the radius of curvature of a plane mirror? What is its focal length? Explain.
8. Suppose you would like to start a fire by focusing sunlight onto a piece of pape r.
We know that a concave mirror is be better than a convex mirror for this purpose.
At what distance from the mirror should the paper be held for best results? Using
ray diagram explain your answer.
9. Explain the difference between a virtual and a real image.
10. A large, empty coffee mug sits on a table. From your vantage point the bottom of the
mug is not visible. When the mug is filled with water, however, you can see the
bottom of the mug, explain.
11. A laser beam is reflected by a plane mirror. It is observed that the angle between the
incident and reflected beams is 28. If the mirror is now rotated so that the angle of
incidence increases by 5.0, what is the new angle between the incident and reflected
beams?
12. An object with a height of 42cm is placed 2.0m in front of a concave mirror with
focal length of 0.50m.
a. Determine the approximate location and size of the image using a ray diagram.
b. Is the image upright or inverted?

YOUR PAPER WILL NOT BE GRADED IF SUBMITTED AFTER THE DUE DATE
EXPIRED.
