Review questions ch 10

1. How does physiology of physical activity fit with the discipline of kinesiology?
- Both apply the same principles of biology and anatomy to understand how the body
works and functions. Physiology goes deep into the levels of cells and different parts of
the body. Kinesiology is how the body moves with all these different muscles and organs
working together.
2. Describe the contributions made to physiology of physical activity by A.V. Hill, David
Bruce Dill, and other key scholars.
- A.V hill presented the basic concepts of exercise such as oxygen consumption, lactate
production and oxygen debt. David Bruce Dill was the director of the Harvard fatigue
laboratory.
3. Give examples of how VO2 max can be measured in the laboratory and estimated in the
field.
- Ergometers are used to measure energy expended in a physical exercise. For example
we can measure blood pressure, breathing, heart rate, oxygen consumption and carbon
dioxide production.
4. Explain how knowledge of exercise physiology might be used to help each of the
following: a college athlete, a cardiac patient, a person trying to lose weight.
- College athlete- They would need to know how to improve their overall physical fitness
and what fits their needs.
- Cardiac patient- which exercises would prevent them from diseases
- Person trying to lose weight- understanding health benefits and exercises that can
prevent diseases such as diabetes
5.
6. Get up and move at a high intensity for a few minutes. List the physiological changes
that you notice and explain why each occurred.
- Heart rate went up- High intensity
- Breathing increased- Demand for oxygen due to high intensity
- Tiredness- lack of exercise on a daily basis
7. What health improvements result from being physically active on a regular basis?
- Stronger muscles
- Improve lung and heart health
- Better sleep
- More energy
- Boost endurance
