Lesson plan 1

* The following lesson plan is adapted from a suggested song introductory activity in classroom by
Lavery (2001) and Pickard (2005).

Date: Song: Breakaway (Pop)


Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
1) think and reflect upon their ambitions/ dream
2) identify the main ideas of the song
3) relate personal experiences to develop a story

Set Induction (Pre task): 5 mins


1) Teacher shows two separate pictures that portrays the action of the word ‘break’ & ‘away’ for
students to guess the title of the song.
2) Teacher briefly discusses the meaning of breakaway with students.

Lesson: (While task): 30 mins


1) Students are given the lyrics of the song.
2) Some of the words in the songs have been purposefully changed whereby during listening,
students have to go through the lyrics and write the correct words.
3) The words would have been underlined for students to identify them easily.
4) Students will listen to the songs twice.
5) After listening, teacher goes through the text and discusses the theme, identity and feelings
brought out in the song.
6) Students are then asked if they have a dream job and discuss over it.
7) Teacher will have to prompt them using various pictures of occupations or images that they want
to have as an adult.

Activities (Post task): 40 mins


1) After the discussion, students will get into groups of four.
2) Each group will be given magazines/ newspapers/ coloured pamphlets
3) Students will then cut out pictures that meet their dream life 30 years later
4) Below the pictures, students will have to write on the dream life that they would want to have 30
years later and how they can achieve it.
5) A question sheet will be provided to help them develop their ideas to write. Students can discuss
on how to do the write up together as a group.
5) Teacher will be going around the groups to make sure they are on task.
6) Students will then be randomly called out to talk about their end task as teacher discusses the
outcome with the class.

2) Teacher encourages students to always have a dream in life and focus on achieving it realistically

Date: Song: I Believe I Can Fly (R&B)


Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
1) ask and elicit information
2) respond to questions orally
3) listen to an opinion and draw conclusions

Set Induction (Pre task): 10 mins


1) Teacher gets a student to do a charade of the title of the song
2) Teacher discusses the metaphor of the word ’fly’ with the students

Lesson: (While task): 25 mins


1) Students are given the lyrics of the song.
2) Some of the words in the songs have been purposefully deleted whereby during listening,
students have to write the correct words.
3) Students will listen to the songs twice to gather the information and enjoy the song.
5) After listening, teacher goes through the text and discusses the theme and feelings of the song

Activities (Post task): 40 mins


1) Each of the students will interview 4 friends on their ambition and what are they going to do to
get there.
2) A set of questions in the activity sheet will be given to the students to guide them to answer the
questions. Students are encouraged to use their own creativity and questions to gain more
information about their friend’s ambition.
4) Students will have to write down their friend’s answers in the activity sheet
5) Once students complete their activity sheet, a volunteer will be chosen to read out his findings of
the four people that he/she has interviewed.
6) Teacher will ask students to add on additional information of the same person that has been
mentioned (if there are any)
7) Students hand in their worksheets to the teacher for record keeping.

1) Teacher goes through the objective of the activity and discusses students’ interest and feelings
towards the activity.
2) Teacher encourages students to remember their promise towards themselves in realizing their
dream.
Lesson Plan 2
* The following lesson plan is adapted from a communicative and interaction activity in classroom
from NSW DET ESL Orientation Handbook Multicultural Programs Unit, Sydney.

Date: Dream On (Rock)


Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
1) predict outcomes
2) think creatively and critically
3) analyze and synthesize text

Set Induction (Pre task): 10 mins


1) Teacher shows a rock in class
2) Students are to come out various interpretation of the word rock; whether it is of the noun, song
genre, movie title, song title etc

Lesson: (While task): 35 mins


1) Students are to get into groups of 4
2) Within the groups, students have a crossword puzzle to solve
3) Upon solving the crossword puzzle, students will then fill in the blanks of the lyric for the song
based on their creativity and knowledge of language syntax
4) Students can discuss within their groups in order to complete the work
5) The first group to finish first will have to break from their initial group to help other groups
under the supervision of the teacher. However, the student must no say the answer but instead
provide various clues for the other students to get the answer
5) Once the students have all got their answers, they will listen to the song and check their lyrics
6) After listening, teacher goes through the text and discusses on the theme and feelings in the song

Activities (Post task): 25 mins


1) Students are given chunks of paragraphs within their groups of four. They will have to rearrange
the paragraphs to form the essay.
2) Students are to read the essay together and at the end, come up with an ending.
3) Students will then present their endings in class to their other classmates
4) Teacher will finally reveal the story which is actually a true story of the singers for the song
5) Teacher will give a token of appreciation with the ending that is voted unanimously as the best
by the students themselves.

communication.
Lesson Plan 4
* The following lesson plan is adapted from a communicative and interaction activity in classroom

Date: Somewhere I Belong (Rock)


Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
1) find causes and effects
2) extract main ideas
3) give advice to peers

Set Induction (Pre task): 5 mins


1) Teacher prompts students on their dream place in the world by showing an example based from
the teacher’s perspective
2) Students are to discuss how they feel a sense of belonging in school and when they feel belonged
to the school

Lesson: (While task): 45 mins


1) Students will be divided into two large groups. Each group will be given strips/ stanzas of the
lyrics for a song.
2) The students will need to read the stanzas of the lyrics once and guess the sequence of the song
3) A representative from each of the group will come out and arrange the lyrics based on their
friends’ supervision as they race through to complete the task
4) Teacher will monitor their noise level and judge which is the quickest group with no mistakes in
the sequence arrangement to be given a token of appreciation.
5) Teacher then plays the song where students will be allowed to sing along if they want to twice
6) Teacher goes through the lyrics of the song and asks students feedback of the song towards the
words used and the intensity of the vocabulary
7) Students are asked if they could connect to the song emotionally at their present state in life and
talk about their problems in being accepted
8) Teacher chooses a teenage problem based on school, family and personal wellbeing where they
are to discuss the advice that can be given.

Activities (Post task): 25 mins


1) Once students are able to understand the ways/ methods in providing advices, students are to
work in groups of four
2) Each group will be given a situation about a teenager’s problem (taken from The Star
Newspaper).
3) Each group will have to provide advices/ inspirational words to help the teenager.

1) Teacher goes through the objective of the activity and discusses students’ interest and feelings
towards the activity.
2) Teacher encourages students to rlisten to their friend’s problems and always be there to give
meaningful advices.

Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
1) practice critical thinking skills
2) identify the main ideas of the song
3) talk about their feelings on how to maintain a good family

Set Induction (Pre task): 5 mins


1) Students are given a family tree to discuss on the relationships in a family
2) Students are then to discuss their perception of family

Lesson: (While task): 35 mins


1) Students are given the lyrics of the song.
2) Teacher goes through the difficult words in the song
3) After listening, teacher goes through the text and discusses the song.
4) Students and the teacher will discuss the family situation which is going through by the persona
in the song
5) Teacher directs the students towards talking about their family through photographs.

Activities (Post task): 35 mins


1) Students are to pick 6 pictures that shows the characteristic of their family and write about each
of their family member
2) Teacher will show students some video clips of what is expected from them
3) Students will show off their product as they present it to their friends as they talk about their
family members

1) express themselves further
2) identify the main ideas of the song
3) relate personal experiences to develop a story

Set Induction (Pre task): 5 mins


1) Students talk about issues faced by teenagers today depending on their gender

Lesson: (While task): 35 mins


1) Students listen to the song and fill in the blanks as they are listening to the song. Students will
listen to song twice
2) Students are then to talk about what the theme of the song after listening to it.
3) Students will discuss on the lyric patterns of the song under the guidance of the teacher.
4) Teacher then explains in writing a poem by giving an example.
5) The teacher will write a poem by prompting students to give some words using various of
questions

Activities (Post task): 35 mins


1) Once students have known the method of writing a poem, students will get into groups of four.
2) Students will be given a picture as a stimulus to base their poem on.
3) Using their creativity, students will come up with their own words to create a simple poem about
teenagers of today.
4) Students can take words from the song to form their simple poem.
5) Students are then to present their poem to the class as everyone enjoy their artistic products with
one another

communication.

Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
1) come up with a poster to create awareness on environmental disasters
2) identify the main ideas of the song
3) critically think of their role in saving the environment

Set Induction (Pre task): 5 mins


1) Teacher shows separate pictures on the devastation of the earth caused by pollution.
2) Students will talk about the type of pollutions that they know and how it can affect the world.

Lesson: (While task): 35 mins


1) Students are given the full lyrics of the song first and the teacher goes through the words and the
message of the song.
2) Students are then to listen to the song once.
3) Teacher then connects the song to pollution and discusses on methods to save the world.
4) The teacher will elicit some of the methods/ words used in the lyrics to save the world and write
out students’ ideas on the board
5) Students sing the song together once more to enjoy the meaning of the song before getting into
groups of four.

Activities (Post task): 35 mins


1) Within groups of four, students will have to come up with a poster that creates awareness on
pollution.
2) Students will be given various materials in order for them to come up with the poster.
3) The poster must have a slogan and theme towards the pollution.
4) Students will have to complete their poster within a limited time.
5) Upon completion, students will put up their work around the room. Teacher will rate the best
poster along with the help from another 2 teachers from the English Panel.
6) A token of appreciation will be given to the best poster.

Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
1) know about the wonders of the world
2) identify the main ideas of the song
3) appreciate the world and the little things that make up the world

Set Induction (Pre task): 10 mins


1) Teacher shows to separate pictures which shows the action of the word ‘break’ & ‘away’ for
students to guess the title of the song.
2) Teacher briefly discusses the meaning of breakaway with students in checking if they have prior
knowledge of the understanding towards ‘breakaway’.

Lesson: (While task): 25 mins


1) Students are given the lyrics of the song.

8) Teacher connects students’ interests with the Seven Wonders of the World.

Activities (Post task): 35 mins


1) In groups of four, students will be given pictures and descriptions of the Seven Wonders of the
World. .
2) Students will have to match the pictures with the description given.
3) There will also be a map provided where students have to plot the pictures to the correct country.
4) Students are then to paste their maps on the wall to compare with the other groups.
5) Teacher will go through the maps as a class and discuss on why the pictures have been classified
as the wonders of the world.
6) Students are then questioned on which wonder of the world would they like to visit and their
reason for it.

2) Teacher summarizes the beauty of the world and encourages students to be knowledgeable on the
things happening around the world.

Set Induction (Pre task): 10 mins


1) Teacher shows pictures of wars and the causes and effects of war to students.
2) Teacher are asked how will they feel about war and what destruction can bring to the lives of
children and teenagers.

Lesson: (While task): 25 mins


1) Students will listen to the song once.
2) Teacher goes through the difficult words in the song.
3) Teacher goes through the theme of the song.
4) Teacher then talks about peace and how students view the importance of peace and maintaining
peace.
5) Teacher then brings the focus to Malaysia and how we have maintained peace all these while.

Activities (Post task): 35 mins


1) In their own groups of four, students will be given a cultural/ ethnic group in Malaysia.
2) Students will need to find information on the cultural group.
3) A set of questions will be given to the students to complete their findings.
4) Students are then to present their findings and relate their personal experience towards the
cultural story that they have presented based on questions/ prompts by the teacher.
5) Teacher then talks about tolerance and acceptance of cultures which form the identity of
Malaysia and maintain its peace and harmony.

2) sympathize and come up with ideas for homeless people

Set Induction (Pre task): 10 mins


1) Teacher asks students and relate to their knowledge on the issue of teenagers running away from
home
2) Teacher shows news of teenagers running away from home.

Lesson: (While task): 25 mins


1) Students are to listen to the song and fill in the blanks as they listen to it twice.
2) Teacher goes through the meaning of the song and the words used to portray the meaning of the
song.
3) Teacher prompts the students on the causes and effects of teenagers run away from home.
4) Teacher then elicits students’ perception on those teenagers who run away from home.

Activities (Post task): 35 mins


1) In groups of four, students will need to list down the causes for teenagers to run away from
home.
2) Teacher will give students worksheets that can assist students in coming up with their ideas.
3) Students will then have to discuss the effects if students are to run away from home.
4) Students will have to present their ideas in class and discuss on ways to help these teenagers.
5) Teacher will write out their ideas on the board and provide examples of the helps that are
provided by various government and non-government organizations to help these teenagers.

1) Students are asked about the necessities in life.
2) Students are prompted to think about their life on whether they are thankful of their life and feel
contented about it.

Lesson: (While task): 25 mins


1) Students will first listen to the song as they read it through the lyrics of the song.
2) After listening to the song, students and teacher will discuss the meaning of the song and also the
difficult words of the song.
3) Students are prompted on what social issues are being discussed in the song.
4) Students are asked their feelings on the words used in the song and how they had guessed the
meaning of the song from the lyrics.

Activities (Post task): 35 mins


1) Students are to get into groups of four whereby they have to come up with an ending for a story.
2) Teacher will provide some ideas to guide the students through the writing of the ending of the
story.
3) Students will have to write and justify their ending as they present it to the class.
4) Teacher will elicit moral values from students in completing their ending of the story.

Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
1) provide kindness to other people
2) love and accept their own weaknesses and strengths
3) express their feelings and exchange opnions

Set Induction (Pre task): 10 mins


1) Students are told to write three things they like about themselves.
2) Students are then to list three things they dislike about themselves.
3) Students can ask their friends who they trust to help them list the strengths and weaknesses about
them.

Lesson: (While task): 25 mins


1) Students are to listen to the song as they change the words which have purposefully been altered,
2) Students will listen to the song twice.
3) Teacher encourages the students to sing out loud the third time, especially during the chorus.
4) Students discuss their feelings as they sing the chorus of the song.
5) Students are prompted to come up with the phrases or taglines that encourage people to make
changes in their lives.
6) Teacher writes the taglines on the board.

Activities (Post task): 35 mins


1) In groups of four, students will discuss and write a list of things that they will change about
themselves to make their friendships/ learning as a student better.
2) Students will reflect upon their current situation and the changes they make to present them in
class.
3) Each time the students have completed their presentation, the classmates will shout out words/
taglines of encouragement as they had discussed previously and written on the board.
