The Internet and Its Capabilities

Background
The internet is expected to be a necessity in this digitally transforming world of ours. In the
Philippines alone, 588888888o888r 67% of our country’s population are using the internet. Over 94%
of persons aged 16-64 have smart phones which enable them to connect to the internet.
Now, in this lesson, you will be able to understand how the internet works. And will also know
how powerful the internet can be. Of course, understanding how the internet works will put you to
an advantage. It will make you more knowledgeable about the information world. It would also open

Types and the evolution of internet connection
We just learned that ARPANET is technically the first internet service that linked a bunch of computers
in UCLA and Stanford (USA). Hence, let us take a look at the different versions of internet connectivity that
have been evolving from centuries ago to our present time.

1. Dial- up - is a type of internet connection that uses a telephone to connect to the internet. Its
speed though is limited to 56kbps.

2. Broadband- refers to a high- speed internet connection that is way faster than a dial- up
connection. Another distinction is, it does not depend on telephones for internet connection.

Types of Broadband:

a. Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)- is a wireline transmission that transmits data using copper
telephone lines. DSL -based internet service provides speed ranging from 700 Kbps to 1
Mbps.
i. Asymmetrical DSL- is when internet users utilizing this service download more
data but do not upload as much.
ii. Symmetrical DSL- is when internets users are using downloads and uploads at a
similar rate.
b. Cable Modem- this method of providing internet service connects to the internet using
coaxial cables used in your TV.
c. Fiber- Fiber optic technology converts electrical signals carrying data to light and sends
the light through transparent glass fibers about the diameter of a human hair. Fiber
transmits data at speeds far exceeding current DSL or cable modem speeds, typically by
tens or even hundreds of Mbps.

d. Wireless- Wireless broadband connects a home or business to the Internet using a radio
link between the customer’s location and the service provider’s facility. Wireless
broadband can be mobile or fixed.

e. Satellite- is a form of wireless broadband that provides internet service through

interlink satellites orbiting the Earth.

So how does the internet work? Let us see the illustration below:

There are components of internet system process:

1. Client- the requester or user of information
2. Hardware- are the tangible things that are used or a part of the transmission of information
across computers and servers. These include:
a. Cables- internet cables wherein data or packets go through.

b. Routers- this is a networking device that connect computer and
networks.

Figure 5 Internet Router

c. Servers- these are gigantic computers that keep information ready for
access on the internet.
d. Cell Tower- this is an equipment used to communicate routers, phones
and computer to servers in a larger scale.
e. Satellite- works similarly to a cell tower however, the satellite orbits the
planet unlike a cell tower that is fixed on a certain location.
f. Radio, Smartphones, Laptops, Desktops etc.- examples of devices that are
Figure 6 Cell site Tower
use to utilize the internet.

3. Protocols- these are the rules.

a. HTTP (hypertext transfer protocol)- is a protocol or
an application used to access the internet or HTML
(Hyper Text Markup Language) documents such as
text, pictures or anything found in a webpage.

b. IP (Internet Protocol) Address- acts like an identifier or a name of a certain device

that connects to the internet. Your phone, your tablet, the website or any gadget
that connects to the internet has its own unique IP Address.

c. TCP (Transmission Control Protocol)- this protocol defines how computers must
send packets (information) to one another.
d. DNS (Domain Name Server)- is a list of names of website that is accessed by users.
DNS has the name of a website along with its corresponding IP address. Just like your
name for example, it has a corresponding binary equivalent.
