TATTOOS,
PIERCINGS AND
PRACTICES
WHAT SOCIAL AND CULTURAL
PRACTICES IMPACT HEALTH?
Health is the result of the confluence of various individual,
economic, social and cultural factors that converge and determine
health/disease profiles.
In Africa, there are cultural practices that are very dangerous to
health, for example, female genital mutilation. only harm! it does
nothing for health. And as an example in social practices, we can
see piercing and tattooing in extremely dangerous places for our
body.
ORIGIN OF TATTOOS
The origin of tattooing is not known exactly, as it is
believed that this art was known by numerous
cultures around the world, but practiced in different
ways.
Women were tattooed to represent their social status,
it was used as a warlike art and convicts were
tattooed to identify them.
ORIGIN OF PIERCINGS
Piercing the ears, mouth or nose to attach ornaments or jewelry is an
ancient practice that is still present in most contemporary societies.
This custom, which is associated with aesthetic factors, has its origins
in rituals of initiation into sexual or adult life in tribal societies. In
some cultures, piercing is associated with decorative techniques, such
as tattooing, the placement of neck rings or rings and bands to
compress the genitals, or with religious practices.
