- Check that all the installation, putting into service and maintenance operations are carried out by
qualified personnel having relevant knowledge of the apparatus.
- Make sure that the standard and legal prescriptions are complied with during installation, putting into
service and maintenance, so that installations according to the rules of good working practice and safety
in the work place are constructed.
- Strictly follow the information given in this instruction manual.
- Ensure that the rated performance of the apparatus is not exceeded during service.
- Ensure that the personnel operating the apparatus have this instruction manual to hand as well as the
necessary information for correct intervention.

1.2 X-RAY EMISSION STANDARDS

One of the physical properties of vacuum is the possibility of X-ray emission when the interrupter
contacts are open & subjected to high voltage. Specific tests carried out shows that local emission at
a distance of 10 cm from the Interrupter or pole surface does not exceed 1mSv/h.

It follows that:

- At the rated service voltage the use of vacuum interrupter is absolutely safe.
- Application of the withstand voltage at industrial frequency, according to the IEC 62271 - 100
standard, is safe.
- Application of a voltage higher than the power frequency Withstand voltage at the industrial
frequency or direct current specified in the IEC standard, Cannot be used.

Limitation of the above-mentioned local phenomena, with interrupters with open contacts, depends
on keeping the specified distance between the contacts. This condition is intrinsically guaranteed by
correct operation of the operating mechanism and adjustments of the transmission system.

FUNCTION
The breaker is transported in “OPEN” position with opening and closing spring in discharged
condition. When the control supply is connected to designated terminal blocks, closing spring will get
charged automatically by means of spring charging motor.

To close the circuit breaker, “CLOSE" control element to be actuated electrically through closing coil
or mechanically through push button. This results in mechanism energy to be released through the
linkage system; causing contacts inside the vacuum interrupter to move towards close condition.
Mechanism ensures required contact pressure on the vacuum interrupter to keep the circuit breaker
in “CLOSE” condition. To open the circuit breaker, “OPEN" control element to be actuated electrically
through opening coil or mechanically through push button. This results in mechanism energy to be
released through the linkage system, causing moving contacts inside the vacuum interrupter to move
towards open condition.

8 MAINTENANCE
Maintenance operation is aimed at ensuring trouble free operation of the breaker.

Before carrying out any maintenance ensure that,

 control & Auxiliary supply is disconnected.
 the circuit breaker is opened first and then external
sequential isolators are opened and the unit is properly
earthed.
 the closing spring is discharged.
 the maintenance work can only be carried out by trained
personnel who knows & respect all safety regulations,
furthermore, It is recommended that ABB service personnel
should be called in, to check the service performance and for
repair work.

GENERAL
During normal service condition the circuit breaker requires limited maintenance. The frequency, type
of inspection and maintenance depends on the service conditions. For this various factors must be
taken into account e.g. number of operations, interrupted current values, relative power factor,
installation ambient temperature etc.

MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE
Following table gives the recommended maintenance schedule indicating the relative time intervals
between maintenance works. As far as the time interval between maintenance schedule is concerned,
it is advisable to comply with specification given in the table.

9 OPERATING MECHANISM & MAINTENANCE
GENERAL
The operating mechanism has a compression spring for closing which can be operated by motor or
manually. The operating mechanism has compression spring for closing and tension spring for
opening. The opening spring is charged automatically when the breaker is closed with the help of
spring charging motor.

A closed breaker with charged closing spring can thus be operated OPEN - CLOSE – OPEN without
intermediate charging, and the breaker can be used for auto re-closing duty cycle.

A mechanical indication shows whether the closed spring is charged or discharged, and the number
of opening operations are recorded by the mechanical counter.

FEATURES OF OPERATING MECHANISM:

a. Reliable mechanism, featuring a low number of moving parts.

b. Easy to maintain.

c. Plug in type motor & coil assembly.

d. Built-in mechanical anti-pumping device.

e. Built-in closing spring charging.

f. O-C-O operation without recharging (With CB is in closed position and closing spring is
completely charged)’
