Academic Challenge Team

Description of Club Goals: To promote academic excellence and teamwork among


students through academic tournament format.

Description of Club Goals: Act for Autism is a club for autism awareness. Our club plan to
educate students to volunteer and raise money for this growing epidemic.

October, AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH in June, and bake-sale fundraisers.

Community Service

Description of Club Goals: To assist individuals in need throughout the community


through a number of service-oriented activities.

Description of Club Activities: This student-run club works together on a number of


fronts to serve the local community. Much of our work has been dedicated to helping
homeless and other low-income individuals through a Summit-based non-profit
organization called Bridges Outreach. Students hold a coat drive, toiletry drive and also
deliver meals to the poor and homeless in Irvington. Throughout the year, students hold
numerous fund-raisers in order to purchase food for our deliveries. Students also take
part in weekly tutoring at the Westfield Community Center. In addition, students react to
school community needs such as a recycling initiative, blood drive, extra-lunch day and
food drive.

Description of Club Goals: The purpose of this organization is to promote global


understanding of the numerous culture groups found in America as well as
abroad. Objectives: 1) To give students the opportunity to share and learn from
each other. 2) To discover how to make Westfield High School a better place for
all of us. 3) To become more sensitive to issues of gender, race, religion,
ethnicity and culture.

Description of Club Activities: Conference at Kean University to discuss the topic of


diversity with 53 other school districts. Students polled 125 students and made a
bulletin board display with the results.

Description of Club Goals: Club is dedicated to helping students explore their family history and
experience the different cultures that have shaped the globe.

documents, preserve photographs and other keepsakes and share the unique immigrant stories
of their past. We encourage sampling of ancestral music and food.

Description of Club Goals: To gain insight and arouse excitement and interest in club
members for Eastern Thought. Bring intellectual, insightful discussion on texts and motivate
each other to learn.

Description of Club Activities: We will read excerpts from various Eastern religions and
theories for discussion. We will practice and share methods of meditation, study mindfulness
and look at culture – perhaps visit a Thai temple.

epilepsy and raise money to send kids with epilepsy to a special camp.

Description of Club Activities: During meetings, members will be educated in new topics pertaining
to fantasy sports and discuss any relevant issues or debates. Also, there will be drafts for the baseball
and football seasons. Members will pay dues that will partly be used for a charity prize pot for each
league. Each member declares a charity for each league and the winner will earn prize money for their
respective charity.

discussions about the market. An occasional discussion or lecture with a market expert, and
participation in sales/donations to raise money for charity.

Description of Club Goals: To create a literary magazine consisting of student writing


samples (poetry, short stories and essays); to host several coffeehouses, offering
opportunities for students and faculty to perform skits musical acts, and read
poetry.

Description of Club Activities: Early meetings are used to select new members
based on student applications. These applications include literary criticisms and
original writings by the student. All other meetings consist of selecting from
written submissions for the magazine and, ultimately, setting up the physical
layout to send to the printer. Plan Coffeehouses, prepare to work at
Coffeehouses.

Description of Club Goals: The GSA is a group of gay and straight people committed
to addressing gay & lesbian concerns at WHS, including the prejudice against
homosexuality that places people at risk and impinges upon the dignity of every
person in our community. The GSA seeks to serve as a vehicle for dialogue, support,
and education for its members and the larger community.

Description of Club Goals: To raise awareness of dangers of substance abuse in the H.S.
community, to organize a prevention movement in Westfield, to teach students and parents how to
respond to this issue, to unite the supporters of this cause that exists at all levels, and to ultimately
make a difference through prevention efforts.

Description of Club Activities: Members will become actively involved in the prevention movement
through fundraising, student events, community events, and other hands-on activities. Members will be
working with the high school health and athletic departments in improving these efforts.

the United Nations. Participants assume roles of delegates of member states
and debate and decide on items from the UN’s agenda. Youth and Government:
Simulates the law making process of the New Jersey legislative. Goal is to write
bills and get them passed into law.
