Later, Uri posted a video of himself
opening the guitar case. Inside was an
acoustic guitar, which was signed: “To my
much treasured friend Uri. With my love
and thanks always. Justin.”
Uri commented: “This is just
unbelievable. This is the best gift I’ve ever
received. I’m so stunned.
“This is going to go now to a special
shop where they will frame it and put it
inside Perspex. I’m stunned.”
Politics is often a murky world in
which prestige, power, position and trade
agreements supersede all else. The UK, for
example, still sells arms worth millions of
pounds to highly questionable nations, but
what is militarily wrong can never, ever be
morally, ethically or spiritually right.
As Spiritualists appreciate, the truth
is very simple: everyone, no matter what
their status in life, will have to explain
and – for want of a better word – atone for
their earthly actions once they pass to the
Beyond.
In the spirit world, there can be no
posturing, pretence, excuses or blaming
someone else for our behaviour.
Every single one of us has an inbuilt
moral compass – our conscience. It is
an infallible guide, which we sometimes
ignore at our personal peril.
One can only hope that by the time this
edition of Psychic News is done, dusted
and delivered electronically hostilities will
have ceased in Israel and a roadmap to
peace put in place.
It may sound trite, but it is still true
that humanity is linked spiritually and
that no matter what views they may hold,
everyone upon planet Earth is our spiritual
kith and kin.
Likewise, no matter where they live,
the overwhelming majority of humankind
has the same basic ambitions – peace,
love, security, freedom of thought and
movement, education, food, facilities
like running water and sanitation, and
happiness.
Winston Churchill, whose life was
peppered with psychic instances, once
commented, “To jaw-jaw is always better
than to war-war.”
Obviously, in these few short words
he meant that it is better to talk to one’s
enemies and try to negotiate rather than to
go to war and fight them.
Though Churchill spoke these words in
the 1950s, they remain as relevant today
as they did then.
Lockdown loosens
WRITING this on May 17 to keep up to
date with our deadlines, today sees a
loosening of the lockdown, which means
that one can hug, eat at a restaurant,
etc, though great caution should still be
exercised. Let’s hope it lasts!
Some really sage advice about the
situation came from Indian-American
author Deepak Chopra, who has written
90 books, which have been translated into
43 languages. On CNBC.com he began by
making three main points:
• Your soul is the most intimate part of
you and isn’t found by running away
• The spiritual effect of the Covid-19
outbreak cannot be neglected
• In a time of crisis, the impulse is to give

engender an epidemic of soul sickness
Then came: “There are three levels of
response to the Covid-19 outbreak: how it
affects us physically, mentally and spiritu-
ally.
“The physical response came first, and
by now everyone knows about self-isola-
tion, social distancing and testing.
“The second effect, on our psyches, is
being experienced personally, but with only
fitful answers and advice.

“The best advice in the mental area is
meditation and yoga, relaxation techniques
and paying attention every day to finding
not just relaxation, but joy and comfort in
your life.”
Deepak wrote that the spiritual effect
of the Covid outbreak had been neglected,
“even though the presence of death,
whether we want it to or not, evokes con-
cern about the state of our souls.
“Spiritual well-being is alien to many
people’s daily lives. With the decline of
organised religion, millions of people ex-
perience a sick soul, however you want to
define it – weariness of heart, existential
dread, a sinking feeling that nothing really
matters – without finding a way out.”
Deepak advised not spending more than
a few moments diagnosing these feelings
or “entering into metaphysical speculation
about what life is about all.” Instead, he
suggested improving one’s soul by:
• Having a sense of meaning and purpose
• Loving and being loved
• Self-esteem, a sense of your own worth
• Tapping into inner peace and joy
• Being of service to others
• Generosity of spirit

Deepak advised writing down “how you
can perform an act of kindness today: show
appreciation to someone, offer help to
those in need or bring comfort to someone
feeling lonely and anxious – the simple
human gestures we tend to overlook.
“In a time of crisis, the impulse is to go
into emergency mode, fear, concern and
panic. Giving in to those impulses will
engender an epidemic of soul sickness.”
Explaining he particularly wanted to
underscore the issue of finding inner peace
and joy, Deepak added it has been taught in
every culture that both are available only
through looking inward. He continued:
“The Old Testament says, ‘Be still and
know that I am God.’ The New Testament
says that the Kingdom of Heaven is
within. The Indian Vedic tradition says
that Ananda, or bliss, lies at the heart of
creation…
“The secret imparted by the world’s
wisdom traditions is that your sense of
self, the simple experience of ‘I am,’ is the
gateway to inner peace and joy.”
Deepak ended by suggesting that the
best way to find spiritual fulfilment is to
meditate, which “is nothing more than
being alone in silence with yourself and
letting your awareness go to the place
where peace and joy are eternal. That’s

how you test an eternal truth and make it
true for you.”
Church has new premises
ALL being well, this month sees a further
loosening of lockdowns and hopefully
Spiritualist churches will be able to reopen.
One which is particularly looking
forward to this is Maidenhead church,
Berks, which has moved into new premises
worth around £1.5 million.
The details came from its Secretary,
Trevor Davey, who explained the church
now has “wonderful new premises
overlooking the Thames with riverside
gardens in a peaceful area without the
main line trains thundering past and loud
cheers from the supporters of Maidenhead
United Football Club!”
Like many churches, Maidenhead had
humble beginnings. In the early 1960s,
Eleanor Robertson, “a wonderful medium,
healer and teacher, held spiritual meetings
in various hired halls in the town.”
Becoming affiliated to the Spiritualists’
National Union (SNU) with just 22
members in June 1966, six years later, a
large piece of waste land was purchased
from the Trustees of Maidenhead United
Football Club.
A second hand temporary Portakabin
building was erected as Maidenhead
Spiritualist Church.
“This building has lasted some 50
years,” said Trevor, “which is amazing for
something designed for a life of twenty
years.
“After many years of commercial
interest from property developers, a deal
was struck to relocate the church within
central Maidenhead to a rather splendid-
looking building.
“The church meeting place, on the
ground floor, has been converted from
a pizza development kitchen, although
originally it was a rather smart domestic
property in the up-market area of
Maidenhead.
“Boulters Lock, famed for the book
Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome” is
just down the road.”
In April, the church moved to River
View Lodge after some years of intense
legal negations led by SNU Trust Property
Co-ordinator Graham Hewitt.
Subject to the government guidelines in
place at the time, the church will open next
month. Trevor added:
“The church occupies the ground floor
of River View Lodge, with a church service
area, healing and circle/training room,
office, kitchen, hospitality area, toilets and
modern central heating.
“A step-free access ramp has been
constructed for the new church entrance
at the rear of the building.
“The church has a large car park at the
rear of the building. In addition, there
are two large public car parks opposite
Boulters Lock within ten minutes walking
distance.
“There are also bus stops nearby. The
church is within twenty minutes walking
distance of Taplow GWR station, and a
little longer from Maidenhead station with
direct train services from London, Reading,
Oxford and to the West.”
When lockdowns end, the church will
be able to seat 70 people. Eventually,
the upper floors will be leased out as
commercial offices to provide an income to
boost church funds.
Name lives on
STILL with property matters, even though
he passed on in 1930, hardly a month goes
by without Spiritualist pioneer Sir Arthur
Conan Doyle making headlines.
Over the years, Sir Arthur wrote
a number of books which are now
Spiritualist classics, including The New
Revelation, Wanderings of a Spiritualist, Our
Second American Adventure, Spiritualists’
Reader, The Land of Mist and The Case for
Spirit Photography.
Additionally Sir Arthur had links with
the College of Psychic Studies. Please see
page 13.
Recently, The Daily Mail announced:
“The sprawling estate that inspired Arthur
Conan Doyle to write The Hound of the
Baskervilles has gone up for sale for £4.5
million.
“The 782-acre Leighon Estate, in
Dartmoor Valley, Manaton, Newton Abbot,
comes complete with an enormous 5160
sq ft main home, staff quarters, outhouses

and miles of woodland.
“Meanwhile the Hound Tor, a heavily
weathered granite outcrop, is on the
western edge of the estate, with legend
telling it is where a pack of supernatural
hounds were turned to stone by a witch’s
curse.
“The tale is said to have been the
inspiration for Conan Doyle’s famous
Sherlock tale, The Hounds of the Baskervilles,
which sees Detective Holmes and Dr
Watson visit Dartmoor to solve the murder
of Sir Baskerville.”
The estate is accessed from a country
lane and has the stunning Becka Brook

acres of a quarter owned grazing moorland
over Hound Tor.
The main house – a period manor –
comes complete with nine bedrooms, and
also has a panoramic view of Dartmoor and
manicured gardens.

Robbie sees ‘dead’ dog
I MUST confess that I’ve never heard of
World Paranormal Day, but according to
the Daily Star it began eight years ago and
is celebrated in May.
To mark the event, last month the paper

The Daily Star termed it “an annual
event where people around the globe are
encouraged to share their best paranormal
stories, from ghastly ghouls in haunted
houses to eerie encounters with UFOs and
aliens.
“It also comes as Brits have been named
the most alien-obsessed in Europe with
an average of 624,000 ET annual ‘alien’
Google searches.”
Amongst those featured was American
actress, producer and businesswoman
Jennifer Aniston, who once said on TV
that her first apartment in Los Angeles
was haunted by a ghost who disliked her
anonymous roommate.
“I had just moved from New York City to
California,” said Ms Aniston. “Someone said
to me: ‘Oh, you have a spirit in your house.
You should have someone come by and
clear the house.’
“I was like: ‘Oh man. I’ve landed in Los
Angeles. We’re talking about ghosts, spirits
and a ghost whisperer?’”

The actor and her roommate heard
strange, unexplained noises in the building
such as the coffee-maker or dishwasher
starting up by themselves. Even their
stereo would turn on at full blast.
Although a sceptic, Ms Aniston hired
a medium to visit the house, who put
frankincense into a dish and started
saying words to, as the paper put it, “help
vanquish the spirit. The dish quickly
cracked when the medium walked to the
edge of the room.”
On TV, Ms Aniston said the alleged
spirit being “hated” her roommate and that
she soon moved out.
She added: “I feel terrible, but I couldn’t
say, ‘It didn’t like you.’ She’s fine … I don’t
know. I got out of there too quick.”
Former Take That frontman Robbie
Williams, who has often described various
paranormal happenings, said he believes
he may have seen a “dead” pet.
“I do believe energies can be left in
houses,” Robbie added. “I did see the ghost
of a dog once.
“It was Trixie, our Cairn Terrier who
passed away. My sister came home and I
looked down and there was Trixie jumping
up at her legs.
“Then I looked back and Trixie was gone.
Who knows what that was? Was that a
ghost or my mind playing tricks on me?
“What was that? Was that my mind
replaying something I had seen 300 times?”
Staying with singers, Atomic Kitten star
Kerry Katona “has also reported a spiritual
run-in of her own, claiming her mum Sue’s
house is haunted after her table lamp kept
flickering on and off.
“After catching what she saw as video
evidence, she believes it isn’t the first time
something haunting like this has happened
to her.
“After posting a video of her daughter
DJ dancing, Kerry Katona said that there
were ‘so many orbs’ in the footage.
Kerry commented: “Just so you guys
have a bit of a idea… just to be clear, this
has been going on for years with me. I
know this scares a lot of people, but it
makes me smile.”
On holiday in Cyprus a few years ago,
a friend and I both saw an apparition in
exactly the same pose at two bus stops.
The very pale-looking female form was
sitting there wearing a hat, holding a bottle
of water and almost doubled up, so her
face was not fully visible.
Telling the receptionist at the apartment
block where we stayed, she denied any
knowledge of that stretch of road being
haunted and looked at us as though we
were completely mad. Sometimes things
are best left unsaid!

Study finds that mindfulness can
help anxious students
A STUDY carried out in Brazil has found that students who
undertake training in mindfulness suffer less stress and anxiety.
The findings were originally
published in BMC Psychology, but then
picked up by www.psypost.org and
featured by journalist Eric W. Dolan.
Study author Geissy Lima-
Araújo, a postdoctoral researcher
at the Federal University of Rio
Grande do Norte, commented:
“My interest in mindfulness and
meditation began with my search
for tools and strategies I could use
to manage my own emotions.
“After I started meditating, I felt the
benefits in myself and wondered what
science was saying about these practices.
“At that time, it was around the end of
2014, I was working in a very different
research topic covering brain development
and decided to change my PhD thesis
to focus on mindfulness practices.”
Mr Dolan said that in the study, “40
university students with no previous
meditation or yoga experience were
randomly assigned to mindfulness
training or active control groups.
“Those in the mindfulness training group
participated in 30-minute audio-guided

guided meditation apps
DISABILITY rights campaigner Samantha Renke, who is
also an actor, presenter, speaker and writer, has criticised
meditation apps which do not consider the less able.
Writing on metro.co.uk, Ms Renke,
who was born in Germany, but raised in
Lancashire, suffers from a Brittle Bone
condition.
“Have you ever noticed that many
guided meditations start off with an
instruction such as ‘You are walking
through a forest?’” Ms Renke began.
“OK, I guess I can come on board with
the forest, but what I often struggle with,
as I lay on my bed trying to channel my
inner guru, is the fact that I cannot walk.
“Hearing the words ‘walk through a’
forest/mountain/beach always throws me
off somewhat; instead of relaxing me it
niggles me.
“Just another little microaggression in
my daily routine that proves how systemic
ableism (discrimination in favour of non-
disabled people) truly is.
“You may have heard of ‘mindfulness,’
but it is hard to clear my mind and focus
on the moment when the narrator’s
reminding me of yet another social
exclusion I feel as a disabled woman.”
Ms Renke downloaded a subscription-
based meditation app on her phone at her
sister’s suggestion.
“In all honesty,” she wrote, “I wasn’t
too keen at first, as I know I’m terrible
at committing to something like a daily
meditation…
“I treated myself because I needed
something to help with my anxiety, which
has, like for many of us over the past
year, reared its ugly and unforgiving head
ensuring that I don’t sleep and leaves me
convinced Armageddon is upon us.”
At 10.00 pm, Ms Renke gets into bed
and listens to her daily meditation, which
“generally starts by asking you to get
comfortable, usually with a straight back
– another thing I find pretty awkward as
someone with scoliosis.
“The session normally rounds off by
asking you to wiggle your toes, feel the
ground under your feet and so forth.
“It has recently occurred to me, since I
began using the app six months ago, that
these are all ableist comments.
“Many of my friends and colleagues are
paraplegic or have conditions meaning
their nervous system is affected.
“I have nerve damage in my lower legs
from a spinal operation that didn’t go to
plan and can’t remember the last time I put
my feet on the floor.”
Ms Renke added: “OK, so do I believe
these comments are purposely to exclude
the disability community? No.
“I do however believe these small
details and failure to recognise that bodies
come in all shapes, sizes and abilities
are down to ignorance and deep-rooted
systemic disablism (discrimination or
prejudice towards deaf and disabled
people) and ableism.
“I can already hear the critics now
– ‘What woke dribble. Surely, it’s just
semantics rather than ableism? A guided
meditation can’t cater for everyone.’
“To a point I agree. Creating a more
inclusive world is not straight forward,
but this doesn’t mean we should not try
to think about equality and, in doing so,
creating equity so future generations will
not need to fight to feel included.”
Writing that there are one billion
disabled people globally, Ms Renke said:
“We are the world’s largest ‘minority’
group.
“Our spending power with the disability
market alone reaches £13 trillion; that’s a
market bigger than China.
“So if I’m spending £30-odd a year on an
app, I as a consumer would like to feel that

Alliance on Mental Illness, depression is
the leading cause of disability worldwide
with adults with disabilities reporting that
they experience more mental distress than
those without disabilities.
“Covid-19 greatly impacted the mental
health of people with disabilities from
increased isolation, disrupted routines,
limited access to healthcare and reduced
resources.
“Perhaps for some these things are
‘simply an app,’ but for others, myself
included, they are invaluable tools to
maintain wellbeing and keep anxiety at
bay.
“Change could be as simple as using
phrases such as ‘Get yourself into a
comfortable position, no matter what that
looks like’ or ‘if you can’ wiggle your toes. It
really would not cost anything to create a
more inclusive environment in this way.”
Ms Renke ended: “I don’t think it’s
too much to ask that tech designers and
developers take the needs of disabled
people into account…
“Companies should acknowledge that
deaf and disabled people exist and that we
contribute to the economy.
“We want to feel represented and can
certainly help brands and organisations
to figure out how best to include us – they
simply have to ask.” n

Doctors say ‘spiritual fitness’ may
reduce risk of Alzheimer’s disease
NEW research has discovered that what two doctors termed
“spiritual fitness” may reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
The results appeared in the Journal of
Alzheimer’s Disease, which is produced by
IOS Press, an independent international
publishing house established in 1987 in
Amsterdam.
The researchers were Dharma Singh
Khalsa, MD, of the Alzheimer’s Research
and Prevention Foundation, Tucson, USA,
and Andrew B. Newberg, MD, Department
of Integrative Medicine and Nutritional
Sciences, Department of Radiology,
Marcus Institute of Integrative Health,
Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia.
They commented: “The key point of
this review is that making a commitment
to a brain longevity lifestyle, including
spiritual fitness, is a critically important
way for ageing Alzheimer’s disease free.
“We hope this article will inspire
scientists, clinicians and patients to
embrace this new concept of spiritual
fitness and make it a part of every
multidomain programme for the
prevention of cognitive disability.”

context of an organised religion and may
be part of every religion or separate to it.
“Spiritual fitness is a new dimension
in AD prevention, interweaving basic

PIL protected those with already
existing pathological conditions,
thus slowing their decline.”
Then came: “Stress and stress
management are under-discussed topics
in AD prevention, yet the authors point
out that there is ample evidence that
physical, psychological and emotional
effects of stress may elevate AD risk.
“Kirtan Kriya (KK) is a singing
meditation that involves four sounds,
breathing and repetitive finger movements.
“It has multiple documented effects on
stress, such as improving sleep, decreasing
depression and increasing wellbeing.
“It has also been found to increase
blood flow to areas of the brain
involved in cognition and emotional
regulation, and increases grey matter
volume and decreases ventricular
size in long-term practitioners,
which may slow brain ageing.”
Research in healthy individuals, carers
and those with cognitive decline found
that Kirtan Kriya “improves cognition,
slows memory loss and improves mood.”
Ms Henderson said that the overall
relationship between spiritual fitness
and someone’s complete physical
and mental health “is a topic of
investigation in the emerging field
of study called neurotheology.
“Early work has focused on the
development of models regarding which
brain areas are affected through spiritual
practices such as meditation or prayer.
“Over the last twenty years, there has
been an extensive growth in neuroimaging
and other physiological studies evaluating
the effect of meditation, spiritual
practices and mystical experiences.
“A neuroimaging study of KK
found long-term brain effects during
meditation and afterwards.
“Neurotheological studies can help
understanding of how a practice such as
KK can lead to more permanent effects in
brain function that support spiritual fitness,
according to Dr Khalsa and Dr Newberg.”
The doctors commented: “Mitigating
the extensive negative biochemical
effects of stress with meditation
practices, in tandem with the creation
of heightened levels of spiritual fitness,
may help lower the risk of AD.
“Small shifts in one’s daily routine
can make all the difference in AD
prevention. We are optimistic this
article will inspire future research on
the topic of spiritual fitness and AD.”

‘Sleeping Prophet’ centre

were abused or raped at one of America’s best-known spiritual
centres. Lawsuits have now been issued.
It is alleged that the offences took
place at the Association for Research and
Enlightenment (ARE).
The centre was founded by Edgar
Cayce, the so-called Sleeping Prophet,
who has also been termed the “Father of
holistic medicine.”
Said by some to be the “most
documented psychic of the 20th century,”
for over 40 years an entranced Edgar
gave readings to thousands of people
diagnosing illnesses, revealing past lives
and making prophecies.
Born in 1877, psychic as a child, Edgar
passed on in 1945. It is believed that his
readings discussed what one website
terms “an astonishing 10,000 different
subjects.”
Edgar founded the ARE in 1931 to
research subjects such as holistic health,
ancient mysteries, personal spirituality,
dreams and dream interpretation, rebirth,
philosophy and intuition.
The association’s international HQ is
in Virginia Beach, Virginia. There are also
Edgar Cayce Centres in over 30 countries.
It still hosts conferences, retreats and
other educational activities, and publishes
books relating to Edgar Cayce and his
teachings. The association is a non-profit
organisation.
Additionally, ARE produces CDs and
DVDs, and organises international tours to
various sacred sites throughout the world.
Two lawsuits claim that as youngsters
several women were abused at the ARE.
Attorney Steve Estey said: “Based on
our investigation, it’s clear that ARE chose
to cover up these sex crimes rather than
report them to the proper authorities…
“ARE’s failure to protect the plaintiffs
in this case and subsequent cover-up
demonstrates a pattern of systemic abuse
that forever traumatised our clients.”
The lawsuits allege that the ARE
encouraged hands-on activities, including
“Hugging circles” and “Massage trains,”
leading to the abuse.
Under the guise of “Liberated
underwear movement,” the girls were
expected to run partially in underwear.
During “Goddess night,” they ran naked
through a field as male staff and campers
cheered them on.
At a press conference, attorneys and
four of the eight women in the lawsuit
talked about their experiences at the ARE.
“When a staff member sexually
assaulted me at age sixteen, at this
supposedly loving and safe community, the
threat of losing my community kept me
from speaking up,” said Jane Doe.
“I believed that in speaking, I would
become a source of shame to my family
and the community. This left me feeling
deeply responsible for his secret.
“At the same time, what happened to me
did not feel unusual. He was not the first
male staff member to cross boundaries,
to be sexually explicit or inappropriate. In
the context of the camp, his behaviour was
normalised.”
Another victim, who gave her name
as Lynsey, told how she was forced to
participate in “Massage trains” with adult
staff after first attending an ARE summer
camp in 2008.
The lawsuit says that a male camp
counsellor aged eighteen or nineteen
made Lynsey play “Spin the bottle,” forced
her to touch his genitals, placed his hands
under her clothing and raped her.
“The first time I was raped by an adult
counsellor, I was thirteen,” said Lynsey.
“I reported it to the camp manager and
nothing was done.
“ARE spiritual teachings set the stage
for a silent epidemic of sexual assault
and violence against young children and
women, including myself.”
According to the attorneys, counsellors
created a cult-like atmosphere, which
encouraged sexually abusive behaviour
and ARE failed to protect the children.
The women claim that they brought
concerns about their sexual assault,
harassment and rape to camp counsellors,
whom they say did not take the allegations
seriously.
Additionally, they said that individuals
whom they identified as the perpetrators
were rehired even after they spoke up
about the issues.
The lawsuits have been filed in Virginia
Beach’s Second Judicial District Court.

Supermodel is crystal clear
on benefits of crystals
TOP model Precious Lee has revealed that she uses
crystal healing, sound healing, breathwork and
burning sage as part of her wellness routine.
Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia,
USA, Precious made the revelations when

‘Don’t ghost hunt in graveyards’
says researcher
A PSYCHIC researcher has called for amateur ghost hunters to
stop trespassing in graveyards and derelict buildings.
“Richard Case has stressed the need for
people to get the landowner’s permission
before embarking on spooky expeditions,”
said journalist Sophie Grubb, “and to be
respectful of relatives whose loved ones
died there.”
Writing on www.bristolpost.co.uk,
she added: “Several channels dedicated
to ghost-hunting have gained a huge
following on YouTube, sharing footage
from abandoned properties and creepy
churchyards after dark.
“Last month, Bristol Live reported on
eerie footage released by a group of urban
explorers, who had filmed themselves
searching for ghosts and underground
tunnels at the old Bristol Royal Infirmary
hospital.”
Unite Students, which is currently
redeveloping the site, said that it has
stepped up security as “derelict buildings
and development sites are dangerous
places.”
Richard, 55, also raised concerns about
safety, as well as the potential impact on
friends and families of patients who passed
on there.
Sophie said that he “travels the world
collecting stories about paranormal
folklore and experiences, researching the
history and analysing sightings to identify
any scientific or psychological rationale.”

several ‘haunted’ websites aimed at ghost

Cemetery Trust, also discouraged people
from ghost-hunting there.
“Arnos Vale Cemetery is a charity,” she
said. “It’s a place of love, respect and care.
We are proud to look after loved ones who
are remembered here and do not allow any
activity of this nature and consider it to be
trespass.”

he understands the fascination with the

to stop people from going into their

not really acceptable for families of people

social media can be really upsetting for

What are the pillars?
I created pillars for the Law of Positivism
simply to turn something intangible
and unexplainable into something more
concrete as an anchor or a visual aid.
Made by the constricted tool of
language, these pillars are just thoughts
and words, and just a foundation to build
on while we’re on a path to self-realisation
and healing, but they can help us pinpoint
the essence of our being, supporting
understanding around energy and how
energy works, around balancing the mind,
body and soul, and around practising
gratitude.
With these pillars as your foundation,
you can create your own path that
resonates with your soul.
Energy
The first pillar of the Law of Positivism, and
the most fundamental one, is energy.
We are all energy – connecting with
energy, integrating energy, emitting
energy, absorbing energy, transforming
energy – and everything around us is
energy.
If we hold this as truth, we also
understand that we are eternal and
infinite. So if we are infinite, why should
we be limited by something as mundane as
WE are “all energy – connecting with energy, integrating energy, emitting energy, absorbing energy and
transforming energy.”

Thought can create and transform
energy as well as shape and transmit
energy only through the addition of the
emotion that fuels it.
Our minds and thoughts are the tools
with which we can create the reality in
which we live. We have the innate ability to
change our perception in order to change
our reality.
Everything we see around us is made
from one consciousness, one thought, one
idea, manifested in physical form.
Energy is created through thought and
emotions. Therefore, the energy that we
transmit to the world is fundamentally
created through our conscious and
subconscious mind.
Being aware of our subconscious mind
is thus key, as our subconscious mind
might be shaping more of our lives than we
realise.
Balancing the mind,
body and soul
The second pillar of the Law of Positivism,
which is interconnected with the law of
energy, is that mind, body and soul all work
together to create the energy we transmit
to the world. When one element is out of
balance, the others follow.
If we spend hours and hours on
meditation, but then go on with our day
without taking care of our body, feeding
it unhealthy foods and substances, the
benefit of that meditation isn’t able to take
full effect.
If we take the trouble to eat healthily
and be physically healthy yet neglect our
soul and our spiritual path, leading us to
become more attached to the physical
life and forget that we’re spirits, this also
creates an imbalance and a decrease of
life-force energy.
Only through a holistic perspective, and
through understanding the correlation
between mind, body and soul, can we truly
integrate and align these elements within
us to create equilibrium.
Gratitude
The third pillar of the Law of Positivism is
the practice of gratitude – to oneself, to
others and to the universe and life.
This practice in itself is easy; just
thinking about things you’re grateful for
early in the morning, or before going to bed
at night, programmes your mind to focus
on what’s beautiful in life (and there are so
many beautiful things in life!) and to create
more of that beauty.
When you express gratitude, you send
out a vibration that the universe responds
to. That response will be giving you more
to be grateful for.
We just have to be mindful and aware
of the ego, which tends to itself with the
perception of lack and fear. The sense of
lack it creates causes us to become poor
in our minds, despite having abundance all
around us.
The ego is fed by society’s norms and
expectations, and by the media’s picture
of how life should be and look. It can make
us think that we don’t have enough and
that we need more instead of seeing the
muchness that we are and have just by
being ourselves.
Gratitude, when felt deeply, is a feeling
and experience of bliss. It’s to know that
you are divine, one with all, and have
everything you need, right now, to do
exactly what you’re supposed to do in this
moment.
Life is ever-changing, just as the
universe is constantly changing. The path
that has led me here hasn’t always been
easy or clear, but with every step I take
forwards, the past starts making more and
more sense.
This is why time is never linear and
our timeline is merging into this present
moment. In life, we journey up and down,
ascending and descending to get a taste of
both light and darkness.
We are not here to know everything

and to become; we are here to be and to
observe life. We’re meant to experience all
emotions that make us human and the end
goal is just to be with what is and to evolve
within in the way that resonates deeply
with ourselves.
On the occasions when we get lost, it’s
because we’ve set unrealistic expectations
or because we’ve lost the nature of our
being, which is love.
Love is the essence of everything that
we are: it’s yin and yang; the merging of
Earth and heaven; masculine and feminine.
It’s not the ego’s perception of love; it’s
rather co-creation that occurs between
two polarities – us and the divine, Sun and
Moon, light and dark.
The most important thing I’ve learned
during my journey is that a positive mindset
and attitude can truly fast-forward us
towards our goals and visions with more
ease and comfort.
When we shift our consciousness and
awareness, programming our thoughts to
be more optimistic and positive, we not
only transform our mindset to positive
outcomes, we also enjoy the way there.
Instead of thinking that life is about
suffering and struggling, we see how
the challenges serve us as lessons and
blessings. Each obstacle becomes an
initiation into something greater.
How to create meaningful
relationships
Meaningful relationships start within
by creating a healthy and meaningful
relationship with yourself.
When you feel wholly deserving and
worthy, loved by yourself, accepted and in
peace, you start creating the same around
you. As within, so without. As without, so
within.
Meaningful relationships uplift us and
help us along our path of growing and
evolving. They are mutual, accepting, come
with ease and also expand our hearts.
To create these, we need to have space,
so detoxing from negative relationships is
also key.
Loving relationships are those infused
with love, unconditional and pure, such as
the relationship between toddlers. There
is no competition or comparison. There is
only love and bonding over easy tasks.
A relationship in which just being in
the presence of the other helps you feel
relaxed and at peace – the opposite of a
relationship that is strained and forced, or
feels unequal and demanding.
To create loving relationships, practise
self-love. Once you’ve mastered the
self-love aspects, you’ll start harnessing
loving relationships.

This is an exercise to identify what a loving
relationship means for you, and to help you
establish which current relationships in
your life are loving and which are not. Some

from a bird’s-eye perspective, without
letting your perspective be clouded by
your ego’s value judgements.
3. Examine the relationship you have with
yourself. Is it loving? How? How not?
4. Consider each important relationship
you have: every romantic, family, friend
and work relationship.
5. Distinguish clearly between the loving
and not-so-loving relationships by
drawing a line between them.
6. Write down why the loving ones are
loving and why the others are not.
7. Describe your own vision of a loving
relationship and how you can contribute
to one.
This practice can be done regularly
over the course of months and years
to evaluate and contemplate the
relationships you have, checking that
there are healthy boundaries and
identifying weaknesses and strengths
Observing them from a perspective
of self-awareness enables you to see
clearly what part you’re playing in them
too.
Finally, if you look at them from a
long-term perspective, can you see
over the course of ten to twenty years
how each relationship is serving you in
different ways on your path?
Choose your community
Usually we’re not just in dual relationships,
but we’re also part of social communities.
These may be oriented around family
dynamics, groups and associations, and
work and school, for example.
Of course it’s hard to create loving
relationships with everyone in a group, but
we can bond with some individuals within
a group and create healthy boundaries that
outweigh the negative relationships within
a group.
The positive relationships are the ones
to focus on, and you can consciously and
slowly build the community to which you
want to belong.

not support you on your path, you can still

listening to your heart,
soul and true needs

Here are some ideas to help you reach
out and create your own community of

Thanks to the internet, the world
has expanded before us, and you can
join beautiful online circles.
• Devote yourself to your interests and
hobbies, and meet like-minded people
who share your passions.
Create your own group or meetings
with people who are vibrating on the
same level as you.
• Join events and find spaces in which
you’re likely to meet those you want to
have as part of your community.
• Set the intention out to the universe
that you are open to meet your
soul circle, and observe how they
automatically show up when you’re
aligned with your authentic self.
Always remember that you’re not alone,
although it can feel that way sometimes.
This is part of maya (the illusion), and when
you feel alone this is a false separation
from the Divine.
The relationship with yourself is long, to
the soul it is eternal and to the Divine it is
ever-growing and loving.
How to honour yourself
No matter whether it’s a relationship,
a group or a whole community, having
healthy boundaries is important in the act
of self-love. It’s about valuing yourself so
much that you don’t let anyone devalue
you.
Honouring yourself is listening to your
heart, soul and true needs, and making the
commitment to yourself to serve yourself.
When you do this, you can truly give to
others.

spreads spirit truths

Having once studied at a Roman Catholic seminary in Rome, Leonard

Tatt, who now lives in Norwich, Norfolk, developed his mediumship and
demonstrates his gifts at various venues.
In an interview with “Psychic News,” the first points put to him were: “Let’s
start at the very beginning. Where were you born and when? Were you raised
in a Spiritualist household?”
I WAS born in Plumstead, SE London, in
1964. My family was staunchly Roman
Catholic, so Spiritualism was unheard of in
our household.
I did not encounter Spiritualism until I
was in my early twenties. This was a great
source of discomfort to my mother, who
did not understand it and would have
worried about what the Church thought.
My childhood was centred around my
family’s Catholic faith; I went to Catholic
schools and church on Sundays.
I must admit I did not understand the
faith too much back then, as it was a kind
of blind faith you were not allowed to
question.
This was one of the reasons why
Spiritualism became so important to me,

as I found that I could question everything
and what is more there were answers.
My spirituality could then become
reasoned and I found this fact set me on
a spiritual search, which I have loved. It
has taken me to all sorts of places and
situations a long way removed from that
beginning.
Is it correct that at some point you worked
at the Vatican? If so, what was your position
there? Did it entail years of training?
Of course, I became Roman Catholic
through baptism. Being only a few days old
at the time, I did not have much of a say in
it.
Becoming Roman Catholic was
something that my parents wanted,

as is the way in most Catholic families.
However, I did consciously decide to
investigate Catholicism once more when in
my thirties.
My father had died and I started to pray
what is called “The office of the Church”
with my mother.
At the time, I believed that this would
be something nice to do with my mother,
but the more I did it, the more I fell in love
with the practice, which is centred around
the psalms.
This encounter with scripture excited
me and I wanted to find out more. After a
long process of discernment, I was sent to
Rome to train at one of the two seminaries
that the Roman Catholic Church has there.
The seminary I was at is called the
Pontifical Beda College. I was there for
four years. The Beda caters for people
from all over the world and I encountered
individuals from cultures that I would not
normally encounter.
We had people from Africa, Australia,
Russia, Iraq, India, Samoa and America as
well as from all over the British Isles.

I studied for a bachelor’s degree in
theology there and have since gone on to
obtain a master’s degree in theology from
the University of London.
I loved being in Rome. The Beda is extra
territorial, so not right in the heart of
Vatican City, but I had access to all sorts of
places which tourists would not normally
get to see.
I also loved studying the history and
the architecture, and met some important
figures in the Church.
I met Pope Francis, which was a special
moment, as well as the Duke and Duchess
of Gloucester, who visited the college.
What was it like working at the Vatican? Is it
a somewhat austere, rigid and lonely way of
life? Can you describe a typical day?
The college I was at gave me
opportunities for sport as well as to study,
so I was not lonely at all.
The day would begin with prayer, both
personal and in community, and then
studies commenced until lunchtime. The
afternoons were free, so I was able to
explore Rome and the surrounding area.
The academic side of things could be
time-consuming, as we had essays to write
and exams to prepare for. We also had
house jobs for which we were responsible.
For a year, mine was to run the bar, so
there was a social side to the college, which
was very important.
Would you agree that although a priest
may be a good, kind, sincere and spiritual
person, all he can offer the bereaved is faith,
promises and prayer?
Of course, faith and prayer are both
very important aspects of life especially
when we are bereaved.
It is true that Spiritualism offers
something different, but there are
times when people are not ready for
communication with the spirit world.
Of course, communication is so much
more difficult when someone is grieving as
what we want is the person we love back
alongside us.
I believe that communication with the
spirit world can enhance faith, as it leads
us to understand that death is not the end
and that God has the final say in every
experience.
This leads us to ask what both faith
and prayer are… and I could fill an article
answering that question!
The power of faith and prayer can
lead us to accept the promise of eternal
life, which is, of course, the essence of
God Who is love, so is therefore without
condition.
For me, there is not a conflict between
Spiritualism and Roman Catholicism, as

both can work alongside each other. Sadly,
not everyone sees it that way.
What’s the Roman Catholic Church’s attitude
towards someone visiting a medium?
There are still huge problems in
this area I am afraid. However, a lot
does depend on whom you talk to.
The great theologian of the
Church, Thomas Aquinas, stated in
his magnum opus Summa Theologiae
that communication with the spirit
world can and does happen.
Thomas had experiences of deceased
relatives coming back from the spirit
world and communicating with him.
However, he ends the piece with a
word of caution, stating that proper
contact with the deceased can only come
about through divine providence.
This word of caution seems to have
been taken out of context and is often
used as a rejection of such contact.
Added to this there is still a great
deal of misunderstanding and prejudice
which can be encountered when
talking about such things in the Church,
which is a cause of great shame.
When and how did you discover Spiritualism?
I began my investigations into
Spiritualism in 1990 after I was divorced.
Coming from a Roman Catholic family, this
divorce was devastating both emotionally
and spiritually not just for me, but also
for my family, especially my mother.
She saw the divorce as something which
both estranged me from the Church and
as a sign of failure. Of course, neither of
those is true, but that was the mindset
which dominated the Church at the time.
I became hooked when I went to
the Arthur Findlay College on a week
with some friends. I did not know what

I was doing or why I was there, but
had the privilege, quite by chance, of
being on a week run by Albert Best.
I was amazed at his mediumship.
Albert’s messages were so highly accurate
even containing names and addresses,
which he put down to his day job, as he was
a postman. I was gripped by Spiritualism
after that and wanted to find out more.
Likewise, how did you discover you
had mediumistic gifts? What was
your first psychic experience?
In those days, the Arthur Findlay
College did not have seminars and
workshops like now. The programme
was quite different from today and
dominated by lectures where one or two
people would be called out to work.
I had gone on a week with medium
Leonard Young, who asked me to come
and work. I was hiding at the back and to
this day do not know why or how I got out
of my chair and walked to the platform.
Leonard asked me to get a contact. I
said, “I do not know how,” but he firmly
replied that I would get a contact with the
spirit world and give a message, so I did.
How I did it I do not know. Whether
Leonard saw something in me he
never said, but that was how people
were trained in those days.
I remember thinking, “Well, if I can
do that, I must do it again and explore
whatever it is that just happened.”
In other words, from that moment
I made a commitment to investigate
whatever gifts I might have and that
experience set me on my journey.
What psychic gifts do you have?
My mediumship is very much based on
clairsentience, but I am also clairvoyant
and have developed trance over many

years. I love the trance state and think that
it is the key to our spiritual development.
Before taking a demonstration or giving a
sitting, do you ever worry that nothing might
come through?
No. My worry and concern is over being
the best instrument that I can be for the
spirit world.
The spirit world is always there, but
the weak link is the medium, so I set an
intention before working to surrender
myself to the Spirit so that they can use me
in the best possible way.
Of course, some demonstrations
are harder than others. Likewise, some
communications are more difficult, but it is
in these we grow and develop.
The difficult messages are probably
more important to the medium than easy
ones.
Are you a full-time medium? If so, is it hard to
make a living financially? If not, do you have
another job to tide you over?
No, I am not a full-time medium. I work
for Royal Mail at Norwich Mail Centre. I
find that having a full-time job takes the
pressure off my mediumship.
The focus can change so much when we
need to earn a living and I do not want to
put that pressure on myself. Besides I enjoy
working.
I have been involved with Royal Mail in
so many ways. This is the third time I have
worked for them and I love my job.
Sadly, I have not gained Albert Best’s
ability from working there to give
addresses when demonstrating, but never
mind.
Why do you think that so many Spiritualist
churches struggle financially? Could it be
that many people in a congregation think
that £1.00 is an acceptable offering when
the collection plate comes around whereas
£5.00 and £10.00 notes are much more
common in Orthodox churches?
I don’t think people understand the cost
of running a church or the fact that we are
all responsible for the upkeep of something
which benefits us all.
The same problem exists in the Catholic

Church where people think Rome pays for
everything, but of course it does not.
Maybe people think that the
Spiritualists’ National Union pays for the
upkeep of the churches, which would be
impossible.
The key to this is education: all of
us have a responsibility as stewards of
God’s creation to create environments
where what is noblest and truest about
the human condition can find expression
and flourish. That responsibility should
somehow be communicated.
What brings you the most satisfaction about
being a medium?
I love to teach, which I find very
satisfying. I like to bring together
connections from many different
disciplines and ways of thinking into my
lectures and am always looking for those
connections. I also find demonstrating my
mediumship publicly very enjoyable.
Is giving a sitting by Skype more difficult
than seeing someone physically face-to-face?
No, it can be quite different, but there
are times when doing a sitting online
allows you to focus and link with the spirit
world in many surprising ways.
I think there is a need for both, but
without doubt the internet has opened
up the world in a way which has taken
Spiritualism to a new level.
Do you think that Spiritualism still suffers
from an “Is there anyone there?” image? If so,
how can we counteract this?
I think that Spiritualism is still painted in
bad way by Hollywood, especially in horror
movies. Again, the key is education.
Mediumship exists to bring knowledge
and to dispel fear both of death and the
unknown. I think we have a great deal of
work to do to counter this, but we can rise
to that challenge.
Would you accept that too often we
preach to the converted and should try
other avenues to reach those who would
never enter a Spiritualist church or visit a
Spiritualist organisation?
One of the most important things is that
people find Spiritualism when they are
ready.
I believe that the spirit world has a great
part to play in this and one which is seen
through experiences of synchronicity. The
spirit world is somehow able to get us into
the right place at the right time and does so
in the most extraordinary ways.
Great damage can be done in trying to
force others into an understanding they
are not ready for.
Our job is to be ready for those seeking.
We can do this by keeping our churches
open and making them places of welcome
and education.
I remember the joy I experienced every
time I went to the Arthur Findlay College
and still do.
We must remember that many we see
in our churches are there for the first time
and it is the experience they encounter
which can keep them there.
Added to that is the responsibility for
inter faith dialogue, which I believe the
Spiritualists’ National Union is becoming
very good at.
One of the reasons people do not enter
our churches is because of the stigma
surrounding them that comes from other
religions. We can overcome that through
dialogue and encounter.
Do you have any hobbies or interests away
from the psychic scene?
Yes, I am a very big Charlton Athletic
fan and a great fan of movies. I also read a
lot on a wide variety of subjects.
In two or three sentences, how would up
summarise your philosophy of life?
Embrace life and experience it in all
its complexity. The good, the bad and the
indifferent all have their place. Try and
recognise the God spark in everyone you
meet. All have their story to tell.

Exercising personal
responsibility
MOST of us would agree that earthly life is often not easy, as we all
face trials, tribulations and difficult situations.
The point is, of course, that this is
precisely why we are here – to learn a wide
range of lessons and improve before we
journey Beyond.
What better guidelines could there be
to help us on our sometimes weary way
than the Spiritualists’ National Union’s
(SNU) Seven Principles? They read:
• The Fatherhood of God
• The Brotherhood of Man
• The Communion of Spirits and the
Ministry of Angels
• The continuous existence of the human
soul
• Personal responsibility
• Compensation and retribution
hereafter for all the good and evil deeds
done on earth
• Eternal progress open to every human
soul
In a nutshell, it is our choice whether
to act responsibly or not. Even if there are
contrary tendencies, for example being
born under a certain astrological sign,
these can be overcome by determination.
Recently, I overheard an interesting
conversation between two friends, who
were comparing notes about a mutual
acquaintance, her bossy behaviour and the
fact that everything had to be “her way.”

“She’s a real control freak,” said the first
one. “Oh, I don’t know,” replied the other. “I
think she just likes to be in charge.” I smiled
to myself, as that is exactly the same thing!
The two continued chatting about this
person and a situation where she had
behaved particularly badly.
“It is awful the way she tries to control
people,” the first one continued in the same
vein, “but it’s not her fault. It’s just her
character.”
I couldn’t believe my ears. One can’t just
disregard bad behaviour as if there’s no
choice. Free will gives us the option to be
bad or good.
There are various degrees of bad. This
particular person, although immensely
frustrating, would not be in the evil
category. Nor is it up to us to comment on
someone’s attitude. Karma will catch up
with them sooner or later.
However, criminal behaviour is quite
another matter; that can obviously not be
ignored.
Some folk carry on through life blissfully
unaware that they have any faults,
irritating those around them on the way.
Other more sensitive souls may
gradually realise from the reactions of
people with whom they come into contact
that they are not perfect. Realisation
of one’s own failings is the first step to

overcoming them.
The need for personal responsibility
is a component of every area of our life.
Whoever is at fault, the natural reaction of
everyone involved in a disastrous situation
is an attempt to escape any responsibility.
It is always someone else’s fault.
Shouting loud does not signify innocence
and is often an indication of guilt.
A pertinent comment was made by
a security guard friend of mine, who
intervened in a dispute between some
youths when he was shopping in a
local supermarket. I asked him how he
established who was in the wrong.
“Easy!” he said. “It’s always the one
making the most noise.” I reflected on this
afterwards and realised it is usually true.
This is how we all behaved as children,
never owning up to anything, lying if
necessary to cover up our misdeeds and
always ready to blame someone else.
Although looking at the fifth principle of
“Personal responsibility,” let’s also examine
the sixth principle, “Compensation and
retribution hereafter for all the good and
evil deeds done on Earth,” since the two are
inextricably linked.
There is one element of our human
make-up which is essential in determining
our actions in any situation – conscience.
Good and bad deeds can be categorised
quite simply if we follow our conscience.
How wonderful that we have this bonus,
for it is the one thing that tells us exactly

how to act responsibly. Even if a situation
turns out badly, the fact that we have
conducted ourselves honourably and done
our level best imparts a feeling of elation.
We will undoubtedly have been guided
by the watchwords of Spiritualism – love
and service. Ignoring the small voice inside
our head when taking the wrong pathway
leads to dissatisfaction with ourselves,
even if we try to convince ourselves and
others that this is not so.
Let us examine an example of where
we might need to follow our conscience.
Occasionally, a deal in the world of work is
decided by those who have been offered
a personal cash incentive to push through
plans. In other words a bribe.
If those involved attempt to conceal
such transactions from public scrutiny, this
is a sure sign that their conscience is not
clear.
Thus far we have only considered areas
of responsibility where we may act or
speak in a way which is unkind or even
unfair, often when interacting with people
with whom we come into contact on a
regular basis.
These are sins of commission and are
linked to the deadly sins that we hear so
much about. It is a question of degree; we
are all liable to be guilty at times of a little
envy, pride or anger and are sometimes
tempted to be lazy.
The measure of how serious these
faults are is surely whether we are hurting
others. However, sins of omission are just
as unworthy as sins of commission, even if
they are a little less visible.
Let’s consider a few examples. Is there
someone living near you who is probably
lonely? Have they lost a family member
recently?
It’s easy to say it is someone else’s
responsibility, but if you pop in for a few
minutes – obviously following any Covid
guidelines – you can gauge whether a
longer visit would be welcome.
Equally, there may be someone who is
too ill to go out to shop, collect medicines
from a chemist or walk their dog. Helping
would not just solve a practical problem
for them, but they too might appreciate a
friendly chat.
Turning to your own family situation,
do you take on your share of looking after
an elderly parent, a brother, sister or other
family member?
For instance, a daughter who has given
up a job she enjoyed so she can care full
time for a parent may not only find it
difficult to cope, but also misses social
contact with colleagues.
If we come across someone in distress
as we walk down the street remember that
the Good Samaritan did not cross over to
the other side: he did everything he could

to help.
If we can offer a little assistance in any
of these situations, we shall feel happier
about the people involved and satisfied
that we have been of service.
A word at this juncture about hypocrisy,
which we could class as pretending to be
something we are not.
Jesus told the story of the Pharisee who
went into the temple to thank God that he
was not the same as other people.
“I am not a swindler,” he said. “I regularly
go to the temple. I fast twice a week. I am
even better than the tax collector.”
In order to bring some scenarios of
hypocrisy up to date, here are several
suggestions about hypocrisy in modern
times and I would defy anyone not to be
guilty of at least one.
• Texting or phoning while driving, but
shouting at your children or other
people not to do so. In any event, texting
or using the phone when driving are
against the law and sometimes cause
terrible accidents, some of which are
fatal.
• Telling children that stealing is wrong,
but taking paper, pens, stamps and
paperclips home from the office.
• Telling the kids to slow down on the
road, but going too fast yourself.
• Supporting the rights of farm workers,
but refusing to pay economic prices for
food.
• Taking time off when the boss is on
holiday without telling him or her.
• Claiming that gossip is bad, but then
repeating tittle-tattle to a friend.
• Wanting the latest technological gadget
even if it comes from a country where
people are oppressed or paid terrible
wages.
• Complaining about the government, but
not bothering to vote.
One really bad fault is selfishness,
otherwise known as self-centredness, self-
interest and self-absorption. This is one
definition I came across:
“Selfishness is not just about doing
what is good for you. It is about lacking
any desire of becoming aware of how your
action can harm others or any empathy,
compassion or sympathy for anyone that is
hurt by an action that benefits you.”
Just so. Sadly, more and more people
are becoming increasingly selfish,
interested only in promoting their own
interests and indifferent to millions in
many corners of the world who were born
into circumstances far inferior to their
own.
In their absorption in themselves,
they are often blind even to difficulties
and problems in their immediate family,
particularly if it has become widely
dispersed geographically.
We would certainly not expect Psychic
News readers to be among the ranks of the
selfish. However, in addition to the points
already mentioned, take a quick look at
one survey of selfish attitudes just to make
sure none of them applies to you:
• Self-obsessed people have a negative
outlook.
• The negativity is driven by a fear of loss
of control.
• This fear arises from a lack of self-
esteem.
• Such people try to control those around
them by manipulation, do not believe
in “live and let live,” and are mean and
arrogant.
However, it has been established that if
we cannot persuade such people to change
their attitude, we should steer well clear
of them. Above all, we must avoid being
influenced by them.
Contemplating “Compensation and
retribution hereafter for all the good and
evil deeds done on Earth” again, we have
to agree that this is fair. As spirit guides tell
us, it is based on natural law.
We cannot postpone being virtuous
until a later date when we might sense that
our earthly days are numbered.
In any case, we know that the way to
peace and happiness lies in those magic
words of love and service. The satisfaction
of treating others as well as oneself in the
right way leads to a profound contentment.
As Silver Birch taught, “When the fuller
understanding comes, there will be swept
away all the hideous growths in the garden
of the Great Spirit that prevent its beauty
being shown to every one of his children.”
The final Spiritualist principle – the
seventh – reads, “Eternal progress open to
every human soul.”
No one is barred from making this
progress. Every human soul will reach
the heavenly spheres, however long the
journey proves to be.

Are essential oils safe for cats?
The quick answer is it depends how you
use them. Cats are more vulnerable to the
misuse of essential oils than some animals,
so we advise you to research and learn how
to use them safely with your cat.
Also, we must remember that essential
oils have been extracted from their natural
environment and are much more potent
than when found in nature. The key to
safety is to differentiate between correct
use and overuse of essential oils.
Natural cats
In a natural environment, cats are exposed
to essential oils daily because they are
everywhere that plants grow. As cats walk
through the undergrowth, rubbing against
flowers, twigs and leaves, essential oils are
released, albeit in minute amounts.
When your cat rolls in a bed of catnip,
she releases essential oils from the plant.
Felis Catus is one of the most successful
species on the planet, so must be an
adaptable survivor, and unlikely to keel
over at the first exposure to aromatic
compounds.
Cats and glucuronidation
It is well known in veterinary medicine
that cats metabolise drugs and other toxins
differently than other animals.
This mechanism is not properly
understood, despite being investigated
since the 1950s, but we do know that the
metabolic process of glucurodination,
present in most mammals, is missing in
cats.
Glucuronidation is a detoxification
process whereby drugs and other
substances are combined with glucuronic
acid to form water-soluble compounds
that are easier for the kidneys and bile to
excrete.
Cats lack an enzyme called glucuronyl
transferase, which means they are less able
to excrete certain chemical compounds,
making them more sensitive to their use.
In particular, cats take longer than dogs
or humans to rid their bodies of some
chemicals, such as phenols.
Therefore, they are more likely to
experience toxic overload if frequently
exposed to these substances. Many
essential oils contain phenolic compounds;
therefore caution is required.

It’s true there are reported cases of liver
failure in cats after exposure to essential
oils, but this has always been when

To avoid a buildup of toxic metabolites
in the body, or fatal toxic shock (at worst),
you must be very cautious when using
essential oil with cats.
Especially avoid the more pungent,
camphoraceous oils, such as eucalyptus,
pine or tea tree (although tea tree is safe
to use as a hydrosol) or anything high in
phenols.
Always make sure a cat can leave
the room to a source of fresh air if you
are diffusing essential oils. Never apply
topically unless under professional
supervision.
Safe use
Every medicine can be toxic if misused. The
safe way to use essential oils with cats is to
dilute highly and allow your cats to choose
how, when and with what to interact.
Trust their innate sense of what is
good. When you do this, you will find that
inhalation is the preferred method of
interaction and a tiny amount is enough to
trigger healing. Hundreds of cats feeling
happier and healthier are testimony to this
system.
Having said that, if you prefer to
leave essential oils to the professionals,
hydrosols and herbs are safer for the
layman to use with their cats. We
encourage you to explore all the aromatic
extracts.
If we use nature’s guidance and allow
cats the choice to interact with aromatics
when and how they like, they will cause
no harm and have many benefits. This is

The lost land of Atlantis
For centuries many people have believed
in Atlantis, a far-off civilisation where its
inhabitants used psychic gifts and advanced
technology.
Accepting that Atlantis existed, what did
its residents look like? What did they eat?
What was their way of life? Here Atlantis
expert Diana Cooper answers all these
questions and more.
Asked to describe her background, Diana
told “Psychic News” her spiritual journey
started “many years ago when I was in the
middle of a personal crisis.

THE myth of Atlantis has fascinated
humans for thousands of years, as the
memories linger tantalisingly in our
unconscious minds, especially those of the
legendary Golden Era and the eventual fall.
Atlantis was a divine experiment on a
landmass in the Atlantic Ocean that lasted
for a cosmic era of 260,000 years. During
this time, the civilisations were destroyed
five times before the continent was finally
submerged by flood.
At the beginning of the final
experiment, there was a halcyon period of
1,500 years when the spiritual level of the
planet was the highest it has ever been.
This was known as the Golden Era.
Atlantis was divided into twelve
regions, each governed by a High Priest or
Priestess, who had autonomy over their
tribe and were highly evolved beings of the
purest integrity.
The fifth and final experiment
A clarion call went out to the universes
for volunteers who had never been to
Earth before to participate in the new
experiment of Atlantis.
Those who were accepted all vibrated
at the upper levels of the fifth dimension.
These new settlers glowed with light and
happiness, for they were overjoyed to
incarnate on Earth to see if they could
maintain their divine connection while
living in a physical body.
They felt privileged to be able to
touch, taste, hear, smell and see, and truly
appreciated being able to stroke the face
of a loved one, enjoy the taste and texture
of food, smell the perfume of flowers and
see the beauty of nature.
The settlers were so delighted with
this opportunity that they would enjoy
creating or fashioning objects which they
needed rather than using their powers of
manifestation to produce it. This was a
time of pure simplicity.
These Atlanteans had enormous
spiritual and psychic gifts. Everyone was
clairvoyant. They could all see auras, so no
one could keep secrets or be untruthful.
People had little need of language as
they all used telepathy to communicate
with their families and friends.
If a mother wanted to see where her
children were, she would send a telepathic
message and in response receive a video
from them directly into her third eye as
they played in a stream or climbed a tree.
Telekinesis, the ability to dematerialise
an object external to yourself and
rematerialise it in a different place, was
considered to be an average and ordinary
gift and was used by everyone to move
things from building materials to picking a
fruit from the top of a tree and bringing it
directly into your hand.
Living in a physical body, the people
could also feel emotions, which helped to
ground them. They would call on the Violet
Flame to transmute any negative feelings
that developed, especially in relationships.
Because everything was open and
transparent, all of nature was in harmony.
There was no fear between humans and
animals, for no harm was ever considered.
All, including the cats, were vegetarian.

like that of Egyptian cats.
Every creature and plant was
respected, so no one would pick a plant
or take wool from a sheep without asking
permission.
However, they were very pragmatic
people and would use the product of the
animals, including their fur when they had
died, but only with permission.
The Great Crystal
High on a mountain peak above Atlantis
stood the Temple of Poseidon, which could
only be reached by levitation.
In it was housed the Great Crystal, a
vast quartz crystal of pure Source energy,
which was the power generator for the
whole of Atlantis.
It was linked to a network of crystal
pyramids, which created a grid of magnetic
energy high above the planet.
The pyramids acted like spiritual
sub-stations and were antennae that
sent signals throughout Atlantis to cells
that needed to be powered. The modern
equivalent is the system of mobile phone
masts, but the current radiated in Golden
Atlantis was totally pure.
These crystals made up the material of
the invisible dome over Atlantis and also
formed an advanced power grid similar to

It provided fuel for transport, lighting,
air conditioning, refrigeration and
anything else that was needed, and was
genuinely free and clean.
The people plugged in with crystals. If
you lifted the bonnet of a transporter, you
would find only a crystal.
The Great Crystal was a mainframe
computer. When the Intergalactic Council
believed that the people were ready for
another level of technology, they would
telepathically programme the Great
Crystal with new information, which was
downloaded to individual temple crystals.
The local mage would go into deep
trance and draw the information from the
crystal. When he understood it, he would
pass it on to the people to develop.
The Great Crystal acted rather like our
internet system with only high frequency
information.
However, instead of downloading
the information you wanted onto your
computer via a keyboard, you asked your
question, concentrated on the crystal and
received the answer directly into your
third eye.
You could also access the Atlantis news
in this way free and it did not cost the
Earth.
Crystal technology
Atlantean technology was awesome and
still beyond our comprehension. People
travelled at incredible speeds that we
can only dream about, built amazing
constructs and used pyramid and crystal
power in ways we haven’t started to think
about.
However, they maintained their power
and their spiritual connections by living
simple, relaxed, contemplative lives. They
were enlightened people.

Family life
In the golden era of Atlantis women were
fully in their power – and so were men.
Male and female were considered equal
but different and each knew they had
incarnated to experience complementary
roles.
Women stayed at home and looked
after the house and children, but were
most certainly not treated as the little
woman. They were honoured as spiritual
beings whose homemaking skills, artistic
talents and creativity were admired and
valued.
For instance, they undertook the
nurturing role of cooking in order to learn
about and express their feminine energy,
which was deeply appreciated.
They also had certain powers, which
made life easier. A housewife could click
her fingers and levitate a utensil into her
hand from the other side of the room.
She could clairvoyantly watch her
children playing outside or telepathically
send a message to her husband who was in
the fields. Because she could see auras, she
knew exactly what was going on for the
people in her life.
Houses were simple, being round
or oblong and built in natural material.
Everything inside them was rounded or
curved.
Decoration was very simple. There
might be an inspiring picture or mural
on one wall, specially created for the
householder by an artist and designed to

maintain a high frequency.
The only ornaments in the early days
were crystals. A housewife would ask the
elemental being within them to light up in
the evenings, so that they would glow.
The living space was downstairs and
the bedrooms were upstairs, where the
sleeping rooms were partitioned areas
without doors.
It was not as if the woman had to run
upstairs when she forgot something. She
could always teleport, but would often
prefer to do something physically because
she realised she was here to experience life
in a body.
There were no bathrooms, for everyone
bathed together in outdoor pools and
saunas in the warm climate.
Men would work at whatever satisfied
their souls and developed their divine
masculine energies.
They were sociable, fun-filled, happy,
people, so families and friends loved to
sit out under the stars, around a fire, and
tell stories, play music, act, dance or sing
together.
Families lived together. As the
generations grew, they would extend their
homes or at least live in the same area.
Naturally, they all ate together
and blessed their food, intuitively
understanding that blessed food is super
charged with divine energy.
The women would sit outside in a
cluster, creating pottery, weaving or
sewing together.
Clothing was a simple tunic of wool,
cotton or silk, dyed with natural plant or
shell dyes. Their only decoration would be
a crystal attuned to higher consciousness.
The priesthood
The priesthood was both male and female
and of the greatest honour and dedication
trained to serve the people.
They would only ever do what was for
the highest good and became the healers,
teachers and counsellors.
At first, the healer priests only had to
balance people’s chakras to keep them in
optimum health.
Later sound, colour, herbs, crystals and
other methods were used. All of these
healing techniques have now returned to
Earth for our use once more.
Not every woman was destined to
marry and have children. Those who
had a pre-life contract to remain single
would join the priesthood where men and
women were considered equal and care
for orphans or become spiritual healers or
teachers.
Family life
If a couple wished to marry, a priest
would examine their auras to check that
they were spiritually and emotionally
compatible.
If they were not, they wouldn’t wish to
wed, for a union was to provide mutual
caring, learning and comfort for the
responsibility of parenthood.

It ensured that a baby received a
balanced emotional upbringing guided by
both masculine and feminine energy in its
formative years.
While marriage was a sacred
commitment, no ring or other symbol was
exchanged, for they considered no one
could own or limit someone else.
At that time, no one had sex outside a
relationship because the commitment of
having children was considered sacred.
When a couple was ready to parent a
child, they would communicate with its
soul before conception, so every single
baby was consciously chosen, invited,
welcomed and loved.
The priests examined the aura of every
child to understand what gifts he or she
brought with them into incarnation.
These talents were nurtured and
developed by their families and at
school, so when they became adults they
contributed to society that which they
did best and loved doing. Consequently,
everyone was contented and fulfilled.
When the children were quite small,
they spent part of the day in a nursery
where they were helped to develop socially
and spiritually by people chosen for their
ability to teach babies and children.
By the age of three, they gathered
into groups, outside in nature and were
encouraged to learn through song, drama,
music, art and play in order to expand their
right brain, which keeps the connection to
the Source open.
Children were educated in the teaching
temples in a peaceful ambience of soft
music and appropriate coloured light.
Spiritual information was telepathically
imparted to them by the teacher priest, or
information which had been programmed
into their teaching quartz was absorbed
into their third eye.
Animals were considered to be
important family members, so every house
had a cat, which watched over them and
kept the frequency high.
Soon after a baby was born, a dog would
arrive at the house and be welcomed in. Its
role was to nurture and protect the child,
who in turn learnt to look after his pet,
which taught him about caring for other
species.
The dog even went to school with his
child. Every child also had a rabbit. There
were on average three children, three dogs
and three rabbits in each household.
Plants grew easily in the rich soil,
nourished by crystals, music and advanced
hydroponic technology, so there was little
work to do. Food was grown and stored
communally, and you helped yourself to
what you needed.
People all lived relaxed, contemplative
lives. Extended families loved to picnic,
swim and play by water.
Wise women were much revered. At full
moon, they would fly above the ley lines
to gatherings where they would conduct
ceremonies and access high frequency
energy.
Travel
People loved to socialise and visit the other
regions. The origins of the Olympic games
were in Atlantis, when people competed
for sheer enjoyment and to hone their
skills.
Ego simply was not involved, so racing
was fun and enabled people to develop
excellence.
When Atlanteans developed the
technology of road building, journeys
became easier for the general population.
They would consider our road making
materials to be crude in the extreme.
Later huge flying airbuses connected
the regions. The priests and those
whose skills were sufficiently advanced
teleported from one place to another.
Even children could fly. At the age
of seven, during a ceremony in the
local Temple of Sound each child was
presented with a metal plate or tray
tuned to the vibration of his name, so
that he could travel above the ley lines.
The owner of the plate sat on the tray
and hit it with a special stick or wand,
creating a specific vibration so that it
would rise above the ground. By focusing
on his desired destination, the traveller
could direct his tray accordingly.
Many adults travelled locally by the
same method. The metals of each tray

Everyone had twelve fully operational
strands of DNA. Because they lived calm,
contemplative lives, the strands of DNA
beads relaxed and connected.
These codes – or building blocks of life
– consist of 64 possible combinations of
oxygen, hydrogen, carbon and nitrogen.
As the purity of Atlantis degenerated
and people became tense and afraid, 44 of
the codes within the DNA were switched
off.
We call these codes junk DNA. Forty-
four is the number that represents the
wisdom of pure Atlantis: it indicates
spiritual purity.
Now as we move again into the
fifth dimension, many people have re-
established their twelve chakras.
Bursts of cosmic energy are being sent
through now by the Intergalactic Council,
which will allow those who are spiritually
ready to switch on the twelve strands of
DNA again.
The keys are love, compassion, empathy,
joy, generosity and positive living, but
they must be combined with a relaxed,
contemplative enjoyment of life. When we
switch the disconnected codes on again,
we will regain our full twelve strands of
DNA.
These disconnected codes contain
our psychic and spiritual gifts, telepathy,
telekinesis, the ability to manifest,
clairvoyance, clairaudience, self-healing,
regeneration and all the powers that await
us.
Reconnecting with the codes will bring
back a sense of oneness and all the genetic
information from pure Atlantis. It is now
time for humanity to rise in consciousness
again so that the wisdom of Atlantis can

Scientists have generally been sceptical and
even dismissive about the possibility of an
afterlife. Are there any signs that they are
becoming more open to the possibility? –

There certainly are. The more scientists
discover about the nature of the universe,
the more evident it becomes that life in
one form or another is continuous and
death is not a terminal event.
We are nothing if not energy, and
according to the laws of physics energy is
everlasting. It is an axiom that energy can
be neither created nor destroyed.
There is growing evidence too for the
survival of human consciousness. This
is indicated by near-death experiences
(NDEs) under anaesthetic or undergoing
surgery when clinical death occurs. This is
when the heart stops and the brain is not
functioning.
Modern medical procedures are often
successful in resuscitating a patient,
which was not possible in the past. There
are consequently numerous records of a
patient’s consciousness surviving for at
least twenty minutes.

So many versions of the story of King
Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table
have been told over the centuries that it
is all but impossible to separate fact from
fiction.
At the heart of the story is the quest of
Arthur’s knights for the Holy Grail. This
was supposedly the cup in which Joseph of
Arimathea collected drops of Jesus’ blood
at the Crucifixion.
To the Grail, however, there is a much
deeper, spiritual meaning than in Arthur’s
story, but more of that in a moment.
The first reference to Arthur was made
by Gildas, a British historian of the 6th
century. In The Overthrow and Conquest
of Britain, he wrote of the British leader
Ambrosius Aurelianus, Arthur’s uncle, and
his defeat of the invading Saxons at Mons
Badonicus in 500.
Nennius, a Welsh antiquary (flourished
c 800), is the first to mention Arthur
by name. In his History of the Britons he
ascribed twelve victories to him.
There are no more surviving references
to Arthur until the 12th century. By then,
he was a Welsh folk hero whose army had
defended Wales against the Saxon invasion
of post-Roman Briton.

in his Life of Gildas, however, wrote that
Arthur had “murdered” Hueil, Gildas’ elder
brother who rebelled against him.

MANY myths and mysteries surround King Arthur.
This might be the reason Gildas had not
wished to name him. Caradoc also named
Arthur in his Life of Saint Cadog.
The Annals of Wales ascribed the victory
at the battle of Mons Badonicus to Arthur,
not his uncle, sixteen years after Gildas’
date. The Annals add that Arthur fell at the
Battle of Camlann in 537.
It was not until Geoffrey of Monmouth,
who died in 1155, wrote about Arthur that
some familiar characters and places made
their appearance.
In his somewhat fanciful History of the
Kings of Britain, he wrote that Arthur was
conceived with Merlin’s magical aid at
Tintagel Castle in Cornwall. His father
was Uther Pendragon and his mother was

Igerne, who also gave birth to Arthur’s
sister, Anna.
Anna married Ambrosius and gave
birth to Mordred, who was later to betray
Arthur. Aged just fifteen, Arthur was
crowned king on the death of Uther. He
later married Guinevere.
Eventually, he and Mordred fought each
other at Camlann. Most sources record
that both were slain, but Geoffrey had
Arthur spirited away to the enchanted Isle
of Avalon to recover from his wounds.
He afterwards ceded the crown to his
kinsman Constantine, son of Cador, Duke
of Cornwall in 542. Geoffrey’s Life of Merlin
also added the enchantress Morgen to the
story.
Camelot, Arthur’s court, first appeared
in Chrétien de Troyes’ late 12th-century
French romance, Lancelot or The Knight in
the Cart. In it, he blended Celtic myth with
the “faery women” of Gallic folklore.
He told the now familiar tale of
Sir Lancelot, his illicit love for Queen
Guinevere and his quarrel with other
knights of the Round Table. Elsewhere,
the quest for the Holy Grail was added to
Arthur’s story about this time.
Meanwhile, the mention of Avalon
on the authority of Geoffrey, who was a
bishop, seems to have given the monks of
Glastonbury Abbey an idea for fundraising.
In 1191, desperate for income after a
devastating fire, they claimed to have
discovered Arthur’s tomb.

received a message concerning the Titanic
soon after her sinking? – David Connor.
Yes, and three years later she
received a similar communication from
an acquaintance aboard the Lusitania
immediately after her sinking.
Hester Dowden was born on May 3,
1868. Her early life was spent in Dublin
before moving to London.
At the beginning of 1912, Hester met
Sir William Barrett, the English physicist
and psychical researcher.
With his encouragement, she developed
automatic writing, but preferred a
particular type of ouija board. At times,
she found that communication with it was
so rapid it could only be taken down in
shorthand.
On the evening of April 15, 1912,
Hester was with a friend in Dublin. She
later stated:
“We sat down and the following
message was spelled out immediately
and very rapidly: ‘Ship sinking; all hands
lost. William East overboard. Women and
children weeping and wailing – sorrow,
sorrow, sorrow.’
“We had no idea what the message
meant. Just then I heard a ‘stop-press’
being called on the street and, wondering
what could have happened, I ran down and
bought a paper.
“The news was that the Titanic had
gone down.” (She had sunk at 2.20 am that
morning.)
“I believe that the name ‘William East’
was incorrect – we had no one present
to follow the message, which came very
rapidly and excitedly – I believe the name
must have been ‘William Stead.’

What then of the quest for the Holy
Grail? It bears the hallmarks of a story that
was originally for the benefit of Initiates.
The Grail is not a physical object. It is
not to be found in any physical or even
heavenly location, but in the hearts of us
all. It is the jewel beyond all price for which,
said Jesus, the merchant would sell all he
had in order to possess.
Known in the East as the Jewel in the
Lotus and Atma, the Grail is the spirit, the
true Self, the real “I” that sooner or later
every one of us must seek out and discover.
In Walking with White Eagle in Sacred
Places (2014), White Eagle, the life-long
guide of Grace Cooke, confirms that the

A message was received under similar
circumstances on May 7, 1915. Hester
returned home about 5.00 pm and saw
posters saying, “Lusitania reported
sinking.”
Hester did not buy a paper and didn’t
know that an acquaintance was aboard.
She returned home and felt “a strange
sensation of depression.”
By now Hester had formed a regular
circle, which sat as arranged at 8.30 pm.
Hester stated:
“The Rev Savell Hicks (a Unitarian
minister) recorded in silence, while Mr
Lennox Robinson and I sat blindfolded and
talked to each other while the message
was being spelled out by our hands.
“After a couple of minutes Mr Hicks
said: ‘Would you like to know who is
speaking? It is Sir Hugh Lane, and he says
he has been drowned and was on board the

“At this moment a stop-press edition of
the evening paper was called in the street,
and Mr Robinson ran down and bought
one.
“When he came up to me he pointed
to the name of Sir Hugh Lane among the
passengers.”
Hester, who is also known as Hester
Travers Smith, passed in 1949 in her
eighty-first year. She also made contact
with Oscar Wilde, William Shakespeare
and other writers.

SHROUDED FIGURE IN FRONT OF ALTAR
THE Rev Kenneth F. Lord is said to have
taken this picture of the altar of his church
in Skelton-cum-Newby, North Yorkshire,
in July or August 1963, although some
sources state it dates to 1954.
The Rev Lord had been appointed vicar
of the parish and wanted to take some
photos of the elaborate interior of the
Church of Christ the Consoler to send to
his friends.
Only one other person was in the
church at the time and they remained
behind the camera. A dozen photographs
were taken in all with a Rolleicord 4
camera.
When the photos were developed,
the new vicar was shocked to discover
that frame five showed a shrouded figure
standing in front of the altar.
The negative was thoroughly examined
by photographic experts, including Kodak,
who confirmed that the figure had not
been caused by a double exposure. There
were also no signs that the negative had
been tampered with.
Further analysis showed the figure to
be at least nine feet tall. However, it should
be noted that the form does appear to be
standing on the top step with the lower

Chinnery and her husband Jim had just
visited her mother’s grave in Ipswich,
Suffolk. She took photographs of the
grave and decided to take the last

mother sitting behind her husband. The

BROWN LADY OF
RAYNHAM HALL
Raynham Hall in Norfolk was long thought
to be haunted by the ghost of Dorothy
Walpole, sister of Robert Walpole, the first
Prime Minister of Great Britain. She had
the misfortune to marry Charles Townsend,
a man with a reputation for violence.
The marriage proved a disaster and
Dorothy found herself accused by her
husband of having an affair behind his
back.
As punishment, she was incarcerated
at Raynham and was even denied the right
to see her children. The grief-stricken
Dorothy remained
hidden at the hall
until her death from
smallpox in 1726.
The first recorded
sighting of her ghost
was during Christmas
celebrations in
1835 when a woman
wearing a brown dress
was seen in a corridor
by a Colonel Loftus
and another guest
named Hawkins.
It was seen again by
Colonel Loftus on the
following night. He later
stated that the figure

appeared eyeless.
Reports of these
appearances led to Captain Frederick
Marryat, a friend of Charles Dickens,
visiting the hall in 1836. However, other
sources claim that the visit took place
several years after the 1835 sighting.
Captain Marryat was convinced that
the ghost was a hoax and asked to spend
the night in the bedroom where the Brown
Lady was often said to appear. In 1917,
his daughter Florence wrote of what
happened:

which she had been often seen, and slept

My father was in his shirt and trousers,
but as the hour was late and everybody had
retired to rest except themselves, he prepared
to accompany them as he was.
As they were leaving the room, he caught
up his revolver “in case you meet the Brown
Lady,” he said, laughing.
When the inspection of the gun was over,
the young men in the same spirit declared
they would accompany my father back again,
“in case you meet the Brown Lady,” they
repeated, laughing also. The three gentlemen
therefore returned in company.
The corridor was long and dark, for the
lights had been extinguished, but as they
reached the middle of it, they saw the glimmer
of a lamp coming towards them from the
other end. “One of the ladies going to visit the
nurseries,” whispered the young Townsends to
my father.
Now the bedroom doors in that corridor
faced each other, and each room had a double
door with a space between, as is the case in
many old-fashioned houses.
My father, as I have said, was in shirt and
trousers only, and his native modesty made
him feel uncomfortable, so he slipped within
one of the outer doors (his friends following
his example), in order to conceal himself until
the lady should have passed by.

I have heard him describe how he watched
her approaching nearer and nearer, through
the chink of the door, until, as she was close
enough for him to distinguish the colours and
style of her costume, he recognised the figure
as the facsimile of the portrait of “The Brown
Lady.”
He had his finger on the trigger of his
revolver, and was about to demand it to stop
and give the reason for its presence there,
when the figure halted of its own accord
before the door behind which he stood, and
holding the lighted lamp she carried to her
features, grinned in a malicious and diabolical
manner at him.
This act so infuriated my father, who was
anything but lamb-like in disposition, that
he sprang into the corridor with a bound and
discharged the revolver right in her face.
The figure instantly disappeared – the
figure at which for several minutes three men
had been looking together – and the bullet
passed through the outer door of the room on
the opposite side of the corridor, and lodged
in the panel of the inner one. My father never
attempted again to interfere with “The Brown
Lady of Raynham.”
The Brown Lady appeared to remain
dormant until 1926 when she was
seen on a staircase by the son of Lady
Townsend. His friend also witnessed it at
the same time. They identified the ghost
by comparing her to a portrait of Dorothy
Walpole, then hanging in the so-called
haunted room.
Ten years were to pass before she
was seen again. It was September 19,
1936, and a Captain Hubert C. Provand,
a photographer working for Country Life
magazine, and his assistant, Indre Shira,
were at the hall to take photographs for a
feature. It was decided to photograph the
hall’s main staircase. Shira described what
happened next:
Captain Provand took one photograph
while I flashed the light. He was focusing for
another exposure; I was standing by his side
just behind the camera with the flashlight
pistol in my hand, looking directly up the
staircase.
All at once I detected an ethereal veiled
form coming slowly down the stairs. Rather
excitedly, I called out sharply, “Quick, quick,
there’s something.” I pressed the trigger of the
flashlight pistol.
After the flash and on closing the shutter,
Captain Provand removed the focusing cloth
from his head and turning to me said, “What’s
all the excitement about?”
The camera used to take the picture was
described as an “old stand camera” with
faulty bellows. The exposure lasted “about
six seconds.”
Later, when the negative was
developed, the image of the ghost was
revealed. The account of their experience,
including the photograph of the apparition,
was published in Country Life magazine on

December 26, 1936.
The picture went global and even
today is still hailed as one of the greatest
examples of spirit photography on record.
Harry Price, the noted paranormal
investigator, interviewed Provand and
Shira and stated:
I will say at once I was impressed. I was
told a perfectly simple story: Mr Indre Shira
saw the apparition descending the stairs at
the precise moment when Captain Provand’s
head was under the black cloth.
A shout – and the cap was off and the
flashbulb fired, with the results which we now
see. I could not shake their story, and I had no
right to disbelieve them.
Only collusion between the two men
would account for the ghost if it were a
fake. The negative is entirely innocent of any
faking.
In recent years, the photograph has
been re-examined and serious doubts have
been raised regarding its authenticity.
It’s claimed that the photograph shows
evidence of double exposure, especially on
the stair-treads and banisters.
Some have even gone as far as to
state that the picture is a deliberate hoax
orchestrated by Provand and Shira in
order to gain notoriety. They suggest that
the figure resembles a statue of the Virgin
Mary and believe that it was added to the
original negative after the pair had left the
hall.
Supporters of the photograph reject
this and say that independent researchers
at the time regarded the negative as
genuine and certainly not the product of
any trickery. They also cite a declaration
from a chemist, Mr Jones, who saw the
negative being fixed. He stated:
I saw the negative of the Oak (sic) staircase
at Raynham Hall in the hypo bath in your dark
room immediately after it had been taken
by Captain Provand from the developer. I
am satisfied that the ethereal figure on the
staircase was there when the film was being
fixed.
So is the photograph a fake or a genuine
example of spirit photography?

THE RETURN OF FREDDY JACKSON
It was 1919 and the Royal Navy Air
Service, later the Fleet Air Arm, was based
at Lee-on-Solent (now RAF Cranwell) in
Hampshire. Men and women from HMS
Daedalus, a training facility, were brought
together for a squadron group photograph
before being disbanded.
Sir Victor Goddard, KCB, CBE,
(pictured) wrote of the affair in his book
Flight Towards Reality in which he states:
I have a photograph in front of me, taken at
Cranwell officially by Bassano’s at the time of
Armistice after the First World War.
It shows a group of airmen, airwomen
and officers, some hundreds of them, in
various uniforms, RNAS and Army, RFC and
RAF, ATS and Women’s Naval Service, all my
contemporaries and
one my friend.
The photograph is
typical of all the chaos
of transition from
the two old separate
Services into the Royal
Air Force, which then
was still quite new and
unfamiliar. The RAF had
not by then been lifted
up into its corporate
consciousness of entity and destiny.
The Squadron, of which the photograph
was taken, had no future; it was to be
disbanded and almost everyone then
photographed was also in transition back to
that less authoritarian life which they called
“Civvy Street.”
But one was otherwise. When the group
photograph was put up on the notice board
so that those who wanted copies could write
their names below, those who scanned the
photograph identifying friends then saw – or
they were prompted then to see – the face of
Freddy Jackson, air mechanic, in the topmost
row.
Capless and smiling, his face being partly
hidden by another, his expression seemed to
say: “My goodness me – I nearly failed to make
it!... They didn’t wait, or leave a place for me,
the blighters!”
Well, there he was, and no mistake,
although a little fainter than the rest. Indeed
he looked as though he was not altogether
there; not really with the group, for he alone
was capless, smiling; all the rest were serious
and set and wearing service caps.
Most had not long returned from Church
Parade and marching in a military funeral. For
Freddy Jackson had, upon that very spot – the
Squadron tarmac – three days before, walked
heedlessly into the whirling propeller of an
aeroplane.
He had been killed stone dead instantly.
He, evidently, was still quite unaware of it. No,
that is not a very rare event. There have been
several of such unsought records brought into
my experience.
What is somewhat
unusual, to say the least,
is the official photograph,
and some two hundred
witnesses who knew; also
the certainty that there
had been no hanky-panky
in the dark room. Not
only would Bassano’s not
have dared to fake it; the
negative was scrutinized
for faking and was found
to be untouched.
Sceptics claim that this photograph is
yet another example of double exposure
and can be put down to a case of mistaken
identity.
However, they choose to ignore a very
simple and important fact – airmen in the
photograph swore that they recognised
the face as being that of Freddy Jackson,
peering over the shoulder of a comrade
(see enlargement below). And why is the
ghostly figure the only one without a cap?
Freddy had been buried on the very day
that his former colleagues found themselves
standing before the official Bassano’s
photographer for a final squadron portrait.
So did a dead man make one last journey
to rejoin his friends and colleagues before
they all went their separate ways? You
decide!

is bridge between this
world and next

WE live in a multi-dimensional universe in which “spiritual development.” The knowledge

innumerable worlds coexist at the same time,
interpenetrating each other without interference.
We, too, by our very nature, are multi-
dimensional cosmic beings, and even whilst
we reside in the corporeal (physical) world,
we are quite capable of traversing from
one world to anothe, to experience some
part of our existence in any of those worlds
at any given time.
These worlds bear no relation to this
world of earth, sky and human habitations.
Although they are far removed in space
from it, they orbit within and around its
physical structure. In fact, these other
more refined worlds transcend human
experience and cannot in any way be
defined as “places”.
They are not found in a particular
geographical area, but are paradoxically
located in every part of space and human
consciousness.
There are no alternating periods of
night and day in these super-sensual
worlds, and every point of their space is a
point of self-created light of a kind quite
different from the light we know in our
own world.
We are travellers in time and space,
and the short sojourn we experience in
this world is a time for reflecting and for
remembering what we have long since
forgotten. This is the true nature of
we attain throughout our sojourn on
this planet is what is already inherently
contained in the psychological dimensions
of our souls.
Each of these super-sensual worlds
rises in a gradually ascending vibratory
scale from those which touch and blend
with the highest planes of the physical
world to those which gradually merge with
the lowest planes of the great astral world.
Humankind is far more than it appears
at a physical level; it is an electromagnetic
force of incredible power and composed
of several bodies or sheaths of varying
degrees of matter, each one subdivided
into seven, and so on through infinity. The
complexities of our true nature require
our consciousness, for a time at least, to
be focused entirely on the environment in

which we currently reside.
The world around us makes us who and
what we are. We know this world by means
of our five senses. Should one of these
senses become defective, for any reason,
our knowledge of this world is then,
naturally, less as a direct result of that very
defect.
However, when one of our senses is
withdrawn, as in the case of deafness, or
even blindness, the other senses tend to
compensate for its absence.
This is exactly what occurs during the
process of mediumistic development
when, with specific exercises, we
encourage the activation of a so-called
sixth sense. In fact, it seems that before
our prehistoric forebears evolved even the
most rudimentary form of speech, they
communicated their thoughts and feelings
telepathically.
The 19th-century dramatist and mystic,
Maurice Maeterlinck, wrote, “The day
shall come when all souls shall know of
each other without the intermediary of
the senses; and many things there are that
herald its approach.”
In our attempt to develop and refine
our sensitivity so that we can establish
communication with those disembodied
souls who presently reside in the super-
sensual aspect of the universe, we
are simply awakening particles of our
consciousness that have atrophied through
lack of use over thousands and thousands
of years.
Streamlining your consciousness
encourages a greater sensitivity towards
the entire universe and those who
inhabit it. The image-making faculty of
the brain forms a neurological bridge of
consciousness between the mind and the
super-sensual areas of the astral world. It
may be stimulated with constant use, as
in the case of artists creating images on
a canvas, or, as with novelists, seeing the
characters of a story they are creating
come alive in their minds.
A strong and active imagination
impregnates the super-sensual
atmosphere with the images it has created.
These images are empowered by the
overall force released by the image-making
faculty of the mind.
There are many simple exercises that
can be used to develop and cultivate the
image-making processes of the mind. Once
this has been successfully achieved, it then
becomes easier for disembodied souls to
communicate with the aspirant.
I use such exercises with a great deal
of success in my workshops and seminars.
Even those who proudly announce that
they possess little or no imagination at all
are always amazed at just what they can do
when they try.

TRY THIS:
• Sit quietly in a comfortable chair, with your eyes closed, and breathe
rhythmically until the rhythm is fully established, making sure that the
inhalations and exhalations of breath are evenly spaced.

• Gently recall the face of a deceased relative or friend, making certain that you
can see it clearly.
• Make a detailed inspection of his or her face; the colour of the person’s eyes –
the shape of their nose and overall shape of their face.

• Inspect the colour and style of their hair, the shape and size of their ears and
mouth. Ascertain everything you can about the way that person looks. Recall
everything you can about them.

• Hold the image of that person’s face clearly in your mind. See them smiling the
way they used to, paying particular attention to the way the eyes sparkle or shine.

• Once you have fully created the image of the person’s face in your mind
and recalled every minute detail, slowly begin to recall the sound of his or
her voice.

• Recall the tone and modulation of the person’s voice, its richness and depth, to
the extent that he or she is actually there with you.

• Focus all your attention on the way he or she looked when they were at their
healthiest and happiest time of life, and make the sound of their voice very
clear in your mind.

• Using all the memory you have of them, and all your image-making skill, make
them come alive in your mind.

• Maintaining this imagery, be conscious of how you feel emotionally speaking.

Should you feel overcome with sadness, try not to turn your mind away from
the way you feel.

• Hold the person’s image clearly in your mind whilst listening to his or her
voice. Feel the emotion of the whole experience washing over you, and try to
maintain it all for as long as you possibly can.

• If you are able to process the imagery for ten minutes, longer if possible, you
have done well.

• At the conclusion of the exercise, slowly allow it all to fade in your mind, and
continue to sit quietly processing the experience for a further five to ten
minutes.

• Open your eyes and gradually bring yourself back to the reality of your
surroundings.
A strong and active
imagination Try not to dismiss the exercise on

Taking a look at life,
lockdowns and love
THERE are many questions one could feature in an article, but my
choice is “What is the most important aspect of life?”
At a time when life may be about to
return to something almost recognisable
– at least in the UK – this might be a good
moment to consider what we see as being
of more and less importance in our scheme
of values.
My suggestion is that life is about
relationships. First we have the
relationship with ourselves. Then we have
our relationship with the rest of humanity,
followed by our relationship with the rest
of life on this planet.
We could add here our relationship
with life beyond this planet. All these
relationships have both physical and
spiritual implications.
Moving beyond the physical, we have
our relationship with Spirit and finally the
relationship between us and the Great
Spirit, the Ultimate, God.
These are spiritual relationships,
although the relevance of our physical
existence cannot be forgotten. Whilst
I have set them out in an order, I do not
consider that the order represents their
importance.

importance. I also feel that unless we
create and maintain that equality we lose
not just part of their value but all of it. This
is a total package; try to take away part and

Each of these parts poses challenges.

that we have a completely satisfactory

understanding and acceptance of
ourselves?
Don’t we all have doubts, questions,
fears, sorrows, regrets and more regarding
how we have lived our lives, made
decisions, affected the lives, development
and happiness of others, and continue so
to do?
We all have things we wish we hadn’t
done, words we wish we had not spoken;
they cannot be altered, but we can learn
from those errors and seek to ensure that
they are not repeated.
What we can, and I suggest must do, is
to move on. We are all now wiser and more
understanding than when we made those
misjudgements.
Life is a learning continuous curve
where we inevitably move forward. We
can regret past mistakes, but must not
prevent future growth and development
by remaining stuck in the past, not allowing
ourselves to move forward.
As writer and lay theologian C. S. Lewis
wrote, “We cannot go back and change the
beginning, but we can start where we are
and change the ending.”
We need to remember and accept that
we are not expected to know everything,

to get everything right first time – or even
second, fifth or tenth-plus time! – and
never make a mistake.
We are all learning from and through
experience, and I include God in that.
God develops through the lives of all His
creations. If this were not the case, He (and
I’m happy to add She) would not grow but
stagnate.
I have said many times that the God of
yesterday is not sufficient for the God of
today and will have to develop to become
the God of tomorrow.
There is no perfection, no end and no
finality, but simply continuous progression
for all life.
The last year has taught us many things,
not all of them good. It has shown yet again
that human beings are essentially tribal by
nature.
We need the company of others of our
kind, the companionship, the proximity,
the contact, the sharing, the touch and the
love.
There are so many stories of older
people being kept apart from family and
friends, in isolation, not having human
touch (I recently heard a medical expert
say that human contact is a fundamental
need).
There were no hugs, no kisses, not even
smiles; I also heard a story of an older
person being told, “We’re doing this to
save your life,” to which he responded,
“What life?”
Being alive is not simply living and
breathing. Think of the babies who have
yet to see or be seen by their extended
families and young children who have lost
a year of developing the essential skills of
communication and integration.
Likewise, older children have lost a year

of friendships, being teenagers, schooling
and education, and the many associated

Then there are young people whose
lives will be blighted for years by being

On top of that, families were kept apart
by travel restrictions and the thousands
not able to say their last farewell to family
and friends.
So much has been lost and it is difficult
to see how it can ever be recovered. The
scars will be long-lasting. We are not
meant to spend our lives closeted within
four walls.
Whether it is in school, at work, in the
cinema, theatre or pub, at the match or

wherever, we are creatures that thrive in
the company of others. We all enjoy a bit of
peace and quiet, but not days, weeks and
months on end.
I have spoken to people who now feel
concerned about returning to those days
of having a coffee and a natter with a group
of friends, people who fear re-establishing
“normal” relationships, afraid that a hug
may see lockdown returning, shaking a
hand might bring disease and even death,
whilst passing close to someone could end
in trauma.
We must rapidly get back to normality
and not accept a new normality that
divides and separates.
However, there have been some
positives, such as the reduction of traffic,
pollution, etc, which has meant that we
heard and saw more birds and other
wildlife, more of the natural and wonderful
things that our planet shares with us.
Hopefully, we will have a deeper and
greater understanding of the necessity of
sharing our planet equitably with all its
other inhabitants.
It is said that “No man is an island.”
Hopefully, we all recognise the importance
of that concept and can begin again to
share our lives in harmony with all God’s
creatures.
We do and will have the opportunity to
create a paradise on earth, a new Eden, a
place of peace, hope and love, to be shared
by all, regardless of belief, class, education,
experience or past actions.
Whether we take the opportunity is
another issue. Time after time, humankind
has failed to do so; we can only hope that
eventually the penny will drop.

As we begin a new
and hopefully
brighter chapter in
human history, let
us reflect on what
matters most to us

there is something other than the physical,
we know that we have a close, indeed an
intimate relationship with Spirit, in an
individual sense, and more widely with the
Great Spirit, the Ultimate, the Source, God.
Individually, we link with family, friends
and kindred spirits who are part of our
wider circle or feel drawn to us. From these
we learn many lessons that offer guidance
and clarity.
Through them and their links with
us, fear of death has been removed.
Uncertainty about what lies beyond that
moment of passing will remain until we
experience the event, but we have an inner
certainty that death is not the end of our
individuality or our personality.
We know, too, that we have an
unbreakable link with the Source. What
has been created cannot be destroyed.
We are eternal in our spiritual nature,
something that is almost impossible to fully
comprehend.
What is eternity when we think of
time in hours, weeks, years or centuries?
To understand “forever” is beyond the
point to which we have developed yet we
know in our being that we are part of that
“forever.”
What lies in the future we cannot know.
There is a universe of such proportions
that the ninety-three million miles to the
sun is just an infinitesimally small step. And
it is all planned, ordered and managed!
Of course, how that organisation is
arranged we know not. Is there a boss, a
managing director, a board, etc, or could
it be a co-operative with the work and the
benefits shared by all?
That’s an idea I rather like! Being not
just part of God, but a co-worker with Him
appeals to my sense of equality and justice.
I don’t see myself as special in the sense
of being different or above others, but
in the sense that we are all special and
add a unique and individual aspect of the
entirety of life.
It may seem an expression of arrogance,
but to me, just as we are dependent on God
for our existence, so He is dependent upon
all of His creations for His existence.
Without all the cogs, whatever their
size, the mechanism of life would not
function. Put another way never play down
the value or importance of your own life.
You could say that if God has decided
and taken the time and effort to create
you and all of us, He did it for a reason: He
wants and needs us to exist.
The relationships in our life play a great
part in our development. Just consider
how much influence the important people
in our life have had on that life – parents,
siblings, spouse or partner, friends, work
colleagues and others.
All have helped us to become what
we are, and what and how we think. The
more we value relationships, and the more
we show how much we value them, the
greater their impact.
We are all individuals, all our own
creatures, all separate identities, but our
lives are inextricably interwoven. What
affects one will, in however small a way,
affect many more. Remember that no man
is an island.
As we begin a new and hopefully
brighter chapter in human history, let us
reflect on what matters most to us, be that
singly or collectively.
Although there will be variations,
perhaps we can come together on some
agreed issues. Caring for, perhaps even
loving, ourselves, our fellow humans and
the planet and all its inhabitants would be
a good start.
Coupling that with a love of truth,
justice and compassion would take us
even further forward whilst adding
a commitment to do the best we can
whenever we can to advance awareness
and understanding of the Creative Power
of God would really put the cherry on the
cake.
Footnote: In our April issue, David Hopkins
announced he has cancer and asked
