Psychology in the Philippines
Psychology was probably taught in the Philippines as early as the 17 th century
at the University of San Carlos in Cebu and at the University of Santo Tomas in
Manila which is part of European academic tradition and was brought by the
Spaniard priests.

Many Filipino intellectuals, notably the two Philippine heroes Jose Rizal and

Philippine Psychology
In discussing the development of a Filipino indigenous psychology one would
be better able to understand the process if we placed it within the broader
context of the growth and development of Philippine psychology or psychology
in the Philippines.

Early Filipino Psychologists

The development of psychological thought has a long history and many filiations in
Asia and the rest of the world. The Philippines has no exception.

The psychological knowledge of the native Filipino was traditionally held by:
 Babaylan: (Visayas) They were the first Filipino psychologists. As
priestess, she was also the guardian Filipino of sacred knowledge. In the
early days, she did not refer to herself as Filipino but nonetheless continued
her practice as babaylan through the centuries of identity evolution from
Offline Activities Indio to Filipino.
 Catalonan: (Central Luzon) The dalangin (prayer) and bulong (whisper) of
(e-Learning/Self- the catalonan and the other healers and priestesses from different ethnic
Paced) groups in the Philippines are rich resources of early Filipino psychology.
The use of anting-anting (amulets) and other psychological practices and
beliefs of resistance movements such as the Pulajanes (Constantino, 1975)
are all rooted in the early Filipino psychology.
 Baglan: (Northern Philippines) These are considered as women religious
leaders who has been a native healer since prehispanic times. At present
however, anyone can give the dung-aw for the dead, especially those who
have stories to share about life of the departed.

Part and parcel of early Filipino psychology is the psychology found in ealy
Philippine literature, be it oral or scribbled on bamboo: the salawikain
(proverb) (Eugenio 1966), The bugtong (riddle), the kuwentong bayan (folk
tales), the alamat (myth) and the epiko (epic).

Filipino psychology is the attachment of importance to the Filipino and his

consciousness. The totality of the Filipino – both his material and spiritual
aspects – are given emphasis. This perspective, labeled sikolohiyang Pilipino,
motivates the social scientist to investigate the traditional beliefs of native
Filipinos.

historical time.

 Academic Scientific Psychology or Akademiko-siyentipikal na

Sikolohiya: Western Tradition: This follows the tradition of Wilhelm
Wundt in 1876 and is essentially the American-oriented Western
psychology being studied in the Philippines.
 Academic Philosophic Psychology or Akademiko-pilosopiya na
Sikolohiya: Western Tradition: This was started by priest-professors
at the University of Santo Tomas. This tradition is mainly focused on
what is called ‘Rational psychology’.
 Ethnic Psychology or Taal na Sikolohiya: This is the tradition on
which Philippine psychology is primarily based. This refers to the
indigenous concepts that are studied using indigenous psychological
orientation and methodologies.
 Psycho-medical Religious Psychology or Sikolohiyang Siko-
medikal: The tradition that fuses native healing techniques and
explains it in an indigenous religious context. A social scientist
suggested that many poor Filipinos are considered superstitious as a
result of Catholic dogmatism, characterized by a vague combination of
animism and Catholic beliefs.

The Rise of Sikolohiyang Pilipino

Enriquez raised questions about the validity of western psychological concepts
and their methodologies. He advocated for a Sikolohiyang Pilipino that would
be "based on the experience, ideas and orientation of the Pilipino (Enriquez,
1976)" and people took note, resonating to the issues raised.

Torres (1997) identified Sikolohiyang Pilipino not only as an attempt to arrive

at culturally-appropriate explanations of Filipino behavior but also as a "form
of resistance to the hegemony of psychological literature from the West.

In addition to the PSSP, other associations furthering the interests of

Sikolohiyang Pilipino were founded:
 Samahang Pilipino sa Sikolohiya ng Wika (Philippine Association for the
Psychology of Language)
 Samahang Pilipino sa Sikolohiya ng Bata (Philippine Association for
Child Psychology).

LSPU SELF-PACED LEARNING MODULE: FILIPINO PSYCHOLOGY

Republic of the Philippines

In addition, Enriquez established his Philippine Psychology Research and

Training House (PPRTH) initially mainly for research but subsequently also
engaged
ISO in other activities like publications and the maintenance of a small

Post- sikolohiyang Pilipino

When he died, 11 Sikolohiyang Pilipino was orphaned and none of his followers
appeared ready to step into his extremely large shoes.
Thus in Sikolohiyang Pilipino, the issues of succession, the need for
reorganization, the need to finally confront basic issues like resources to stay
afloat and other organizational issues had to be resolved first. The heir-
apparent was Rogelia Pe-Pua who had ably assisted Enriquez since her student
days and the inception of Sikolohiyang Pilipino and was by then an assistant
professor at the University of the Philippines Department of Psychology.

There are still many concepts Enriquez raised in his lifetime and questions he
posed which need empirical research support and validation
