Whales are sea-living mammals. They therefore breathe air but cannot survive on land. Some
species are very large indeed and the blue whale, which can exceed 30 meter length, is the largest
animal which lives on earth. Superficially, the whale looks rather like a fish, but there are important
difference in its external structure; its tail consists of a pair of broad, flat horizontal paddles (the
tail of a fish is vertical) and it has a single nostril on top of its breadth, broad head. The skin is
smooth and shiny and beneath it lies a layer of flat (blubber). This is up to 30 meter in thickness
and serves to conserve heat and body fluids.

Read The Following Text and Answer the Questions Number 22 - 26

Facsimile
A facsimile or fax machine resembles a small photocopier. It is a
device capable of transmitting or receiving an exact copy of a page of
printed or pictorial matter over telephone lines, in usually, less than 60
seconds.
To send a document, the user inserts it into the machine and dials
the telephone number of the receiving fax machine. After the connection
is made, an electronic scanner on the transmitting machine moves across
the page and converts the image into a set of electronic signals. These
signals travel over the telephone lines to the receiving fax machine. That machine converts the
electronic signals back into an image of the original document and then prints a copy.
Most of contemporary fax machines conform to a set of standards, known as Group III, that
were implemented in 1980, and that requires digital image scanning and data compression.
Machine built to conform to Group III standard transmit the data at a maximum 9,600 bits per
second (bps).
News services often use facsimile to send news stories and photographs to newspapers and
television station. Banks, laws firms and other businesses use facsimile to send copies of
documents to clients and other organizations.
Nowadays, fax machine can be used to receive a copy of a page sent through email and the
machine can even send it to e-mail. Latest science inventions cover real bigger photocopiers that
can produce copies of documents directly sent to e-mail and, of course, to the fax machine in
another part of the world. Facsimile has truly gone through great changes of role as just as simple
photocopiers.

Radio
A radio is a box filled with electronic components that cathches radio waves sailing through the air
and converts them back into sounds your ears can hear.
Radio means sending energy with waves. In other words, it is a method of transmitting without
using any kind of direct, wired connection. That’s why it is often called wireless. The equipment that sends
8
out a radio wave sent by a transmitter whizzes through the air ~ maybe from one side of the world to the
other ~ and completes its journey when it reaches a second piece of equipment called a receiver. When
you extend the antennae, it snatches some of the electromagnetic energy passing by. Tune the radio into
a station and an electronic circuit inside the radio selects only the program you want from all those that
are broadcasting.
Radio was first developed in the late 19th century and reached its popularity several decades later.
Even though radio broadcasting is not quite as popular as it once was, in the last few years, radio has
become the heart of new technologies such as wireless internet and cell phones.
37. What does the text mostly tell about?
The general information of radio
The benefit of using radio
The important role of radio
How to use radio
The history of radio
38. Which of the following is not part of the radio?
Antennae
A transmitter
Speakers
Tuner
Screen
39. What is the function of tuner?
To select only the program we want from all those that are broadcasting.
To snatch some of the electromagnetic energy passing by.
To transmit electrical energy from one place to another.
To send out a radio wave.
To complete the journey when it reaches a second place of equipment.
40. According to the text, it can be concluded that....
Radio needds a wire to transmit energy
Radio became popular in 1800s
Radio is still popular in the twentieth century
The existance of radio leads new technologies, such as cell phone
The use of radio changed after the new technologies emerged

Remote sensing is the acquisition of information about an object or phenomenon, without
making physical contact with the object. In modern usage, the term generally refers to the use of
an aerial sensor technology to detect and classify objects on Earth (both on the surface, and in the
atmosphere and ocean) by means of propagated signals (e.g. electromagnetic radiation emitted
from aircraft or satellites).
There are two main types or remote sensing: passive remote sensing and active remote
sensing. Passive sensors detect natural radiation that is emitted or reflected by the objects or
surrounding area being observed. Reflected sunlight is the most common source of radiation
measured by passive censors. Examples of passive remote sensors include film photography, infra-
red, charge-coupled devices, and radiometers. Active collection, on the other hand, emits energy in
order to scan objects and areas whereupon a sensor then detects and measures the radiation that
is reflected or backscattered from the target. RADAR and LIDAR are examples of active remote
sensing where the time delay between emission and return is measured, stabilizing the location,
height, speed and direction of an object.

42. From the text we know that remote sensing….

is not difficult to do
does not make use of censors
does not make use propagated signals
makes physical contact with the object

9
is a way to obtain information about an object or phenomenon
43. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?
Active sensing is better than passive sensing
Passive sensing is not as strong as active sensing
The energy in sunlight is important for remote sensing
The source of energy radiated for sensing determines whether it is the active or passive
type
Active remote sensing and passive remote sensing are equally useful for the development
of
knowledge and technology
44. Based on the text we can say that…
remote sensing is expensive technology
remote sensing is useful for transportation
we can apply the technology to study animal
