Archeology is the scientific study of human past. It is the means whereby we are able to extend our knowledge of
human history beyond the limits of written records. In India, written history goes back many millennia; and,
throughout the words inscriptions on the stone and clay tablets are only a few millennia old. Such records
encompass only a small fraction of the human story. Archaeology gives us access to entire spectrum of human
experience is spanning several million years on Africa. This enormous time depth offers the potential to study
long-term cultural processes and the opportunity to learn the lessons of the countless cultures. Recovering this
knowledge may prove vital to our own survival.

Prose passage -II (Que No. 6-10)

The art of madhubani painting is the traditional style developed in the Mithila region , in the village around
Madhubani Bihar. Madhubani literally means forest of honey. This style of painting has been traditionally used
by the women of the region ,though men are involved to meet the demand . The work is done on freshly
painted mud walls. For commerical purposes, it is now being done on cloth and paper etc.
The paintings are basically religious nature . They are done in special rooms their homes on the main village ,
walls , etc for ceremonal or ritualistic purposes . The women offer prayers to the deities before starting their
work . Figures from nature and mythology are adapted to suit their style . The themes and designs widely
painted are worship of Hindu deites such as Krishna, Rama, Shiva, Durga, Lakshmi, Sun and Moon, Tulsi plant.
Floral animal and bird, moffits, geometricals designs are used to fill the gaps. There is hardly any space
between the styles. Cotton wrapped around a bamboo stick from the brush. Colors applied are prepared by
artists. This skill is handed down generation and hence the traditional designs and patterns are widely
maintained. It is believed that genesis of Madhubani paintings came about when a King Janaka asked for
paintings to be developed for his daughter sita's wedding.
