Chapter -1
INTRODUCTION

1.1 GENERAL

It is proposed to carry out Subsurface Explorations for Factory work at Bagodara for
Genext Steels Ltd.The task is entrusted to Soilmate Laboratories &Consultancy, Ahmedabad.

The investigations include carrying out Boreholes for field testing, collecting Disturbed
and Undisturbed Soil/Rock Samples during exploration. Laboratory Tests are to be performed on
Soil/Rock Samples for Soil/Rock Classification as well as strength deformation characteristics of
the same. A Geotechnical Investigation Report based on the Field Testing, Laboratory Testing
Results including recommendations for type, placement depth and safe load carrying capacity of
foundation is to be submitted.
1.2 OBJECTIVES FOR THE GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATIONS :
The present investigations are planned to provide Geotechnical Information about the
proposed site.
The investigations aim at the following:
1. Determining the location and thickness of soil and/or rock strata/substrata.
2. Determining location of the Ground Water Table.
3. Conducting field tests and collection of samples for laboratory testing
4. Conducting laboratory tests to measure relevant engineering properties.
5. General recommendations for suitable type of foundation, placement depth and safe
bearing capacity.

Geotechnical Investigations are carried out using One (1) bore holes of 10m depth below
existing ground level (EGL). Rotary drilling method is proposed using 150mm diameter bore
holes. Disturbed and Undisturbed are collected at regular predefined intervals which are further
tested in the laboratory for appropriate tests. Field SPT tests in the bore holes are carried out to
identify strength deformation properties of the Insitu soil/rock.
The investigations provide information about the sub-surface conditions at locations of
bore holes and the same is used to envisage placement depth of the foundation, type of
foundation required (i.e. shallow or deep) etc.. The data will also be useful in defining
construction methods, precautions required from execution and design point of view and to
determine the need for further investigations required if any, based on need of the project.

1.3 METHODOLOGY FOR GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATIONS

The no. of boreholes, depth and locations are predefined by the Client. Following
guidelines are adopted for testing & sampling from these bore hole:
1. In the soil strata/ overburden, the SPT test to be conducted at max. 3.00m intervals.
Undisturbed Samples (UDS) using thin walled sampler are collected at appropriate interval
based on nature of soil. SPT & UDS may thus be performed alternately at not less than
1.50m interval.
2. In hard stratum if UDS is not obtained either core samples or disturbed samples are collected.
When the hard strata is encountered the core samples of rock to be collected and tested in the
laboratory.
3. The Ground Water Table if encountered to be recorded in the data sheets.

Laboratory testing of selected soil samples is to be carried out to assess physical,

chemical and strength deformation characteristics of the soil samples. On the UDS the tests to be
conducted are Field Unit Weight, Field Water Content, Sieve Analysis, Liquid Limit, Plastic
Limit and Shrinkage Limit (Atterberg’s Limit), Specific Gravity, Direct Shear Test/Triaxial
Compression Test, Consolidation Test, % Free Swell, Swell Pressure Test, Laboratory Proctor
Test, etc. as required based on the soil type encountered. The samples collected from split spoon
sampler in field Standard Penetration Test (SPT) and other disturbed samples from the bore holes
are tested for Sieve Analysis as well as Liquid Limit & Plastic Limit (Atterberg’s Limit) to arrive
at Classification of Soil as per IS 1498.

The analysis of results obtained thus is carried out to arrive at suitable type of the
foundation in the area, placement depth of the foundations and safe bearing capacity.

FIELD AND LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS
USING EXPLORATORY BORE HOLES
2.1 GENERAL
Necessary details of bore hole identification no., name of location, etc. are provided to SMLC
personnel. Detailed exploration program was worked out along with guide lines to be followed
during the explorations.

2.2 BORE HOLE LOCATIONS & DETAILS

The Geotechnical Investigations are carried out using One (01) bore hole of 10m depth
below EGL.

2.3 FIELD TESTING AND DRILLING BORE HOLES

Drilling of bore holes at the predetermined locations to a required depth is carried out. As
defined in the methodology for exploration program, SPT are performed at the predetermined
depths and disturbed samples are collected from the Boreholes. Rotary Drilling/Wash boring is
used using 150mm diameter Bore holes.
While drilling through soil strata, the information required is visual description of the soil
(colour, particle size-visual classification, plasticity, water content etc.), change of strata, etc.
The depth of Ground water Table if encountered is reported.

2.3.1 STANDARD PENETRATION TEST

Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) (IS-2131) are carried out in the bore hole at
predetermined depths. It gives indirect evaluation of strength–deformation characteristics of the
sub soil. The test includes driving a split spoon sampler using a 63.5 kg hammer with a free fall
of 750mm. The first 15cm is considered as seating drive. The no. of blows required to penetrate
next 30 cm is reported as N-value. Empirical relations are established to correlate N-Value with
the shear parameters or bearing capacity of soil. A disturbed soil sample is collected in side the
split spoon sampler which can be used to find soil classification and Insitu water content.
If the no. of blows exceeds 50 before desired penetration is achieved, it is reported as N-
value >50 with the actual penetration achieved. Corrections to SPT N-value are applied for
Cohesionless soil as given below:
1. Due to Overburden – The N value for cohesionless soil shall be corrected for
overburden as
N' 0.77*log10 200
Po
o
Where, p =existing overburden in t/m2.
2. Due to Dilatancy – The value obtained above shall be corrected for dilatancy,
if the stratum consists of fine sand and silt below water table for values of N ’
greater than 15, as (N ”) :
N ” = 15 + (N' 15)
2

2.4 LABORATORYTESTING :

The Undisturbed and disturbed soil samples collected from the boreholes at site are
transferred to the Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory, SMLC, Ahmedabad.

The laboratory testing of samples has been carried out to assess physical as well as
strength deformation characteristics of the soil. On undisturbed samples the tests conducted are
Insitu Dry Unit Weight, Insitu Water Content, Sieve Analysis, Liquid Limit & Plastic Limit
(Atterberg’s Limit), Direct Shear Test etc. The SPT samples and Disturbed Samples are tested
for Sieve Analysis as well as Liquid Limit & Plastic Limit (Atterberg’s Limit) to arrive at
Classification of Soil as per IS1498.

Broad objectives of laboratory testing of soil are given below:

1. Measurement of Physical Properties of Soil for Soil Classification. Based on Soil

Classification, general guide lines for hydraulic properties (permeability etc.), Strength
properties (shear strength parameters, compressibility etc.), suitability of soil for different
purpose (e.g. foundations, etc.) can be obtained.
- The tests required are Sieve Analysis, Liquid Limit and Plastic Limit Tests.
2. Determination of Strength Properties of soil for determination of bearing capacity of
foundations etc.
- Direct Shear/ Triaxial Compression Test can be used for this purpose.

All the tests are carried out in accordance with Compendium of Indian Standards on Soil
Engineering – Volume 1 (Laboratory Testing), Special Publication of BIS. The soil based on
physical properties is classified as per IS 1498 – 1970.

The detailed procedure and guide lines for the Laboratory Tests are given in

Compendium of Indian Standards on Soil Engineering – Volume 1 (Laboratory Testing), Special

Publication of BIS.

ANALYSIS, RESULTS & RECOMMENDATIONS
(SHALLOW FOUNDATION)
4.1 General:
The main aim of the Investigations is to determine type of Foundation and placement
depth of the foundation and safe bearing capacity.

4.2 SAFE BEARING CAPACITY : SHALLOW FOUNDATION :

(A) DETERMINATION OF PLACEMENT DEPTH OF THE FOOTING.

As a general guide, the foundation is provided at minimum 0.75m below Existing

Ground Level (IS–1080). As per IRC-78: 2014, placement depth is 1.20m below the scour
line for soil strata. IRC-78: 2014 recommends a minimum embedment of 0.6m for hard
rock and 1.50m for weathered rock strata.

(B) NET SAFE BEARING PRESSURE: SHEAR CRITERIA:

For bearing capacity of foundations resting on rock strata, following methods are
considered:

i) Presumptive values: IS 12070-1987.

ii) Based on Rock Mass Rating (RMR value) : IS 13365 (part I), IS 12070-1987.

iii) Based on Unconfined Compressive Strength of Rock (As per Clause No. 6 and Clause No. 9, IS
: 12070, 1987)

(C) Determination of Net Bearing Pressure allowable settlement:

For the rock strata, settlement is not governing criteria in general as the recommendations for the
allowable bearing pressure accounts for allowable settlement also.
SAFE BEARING CAPACITY FOR ISOLATED FOOTINGS :

Based on the Plasticity Theory, Ultimate Bearing Capacity equation was given by Terzaghi.
This was amended by many investigators and the one which is adopted by IS-6403. A FoS =
2.50 is used to obtain Net Safe Bearing Pressure from the shear criteria.

BEARING CAPACITY EQUATION : SHEAR CRITERIA ( IS 6403 – 1981)

For General Shear Failure Criteria:

1
qna, s  {c.Nc.sc.dc.ic  q.(Nq  1).sq.dq.iq  0.5B.s.d.i.Rw '}/ FOS
FOS
Where,

qna,s= net allowable bearing pressure kN/m2, Shear Criteria

c,  = shear parameters
Nc, Nq, Nγ = Bearing Capacity factors based on  for General Shear Failure
Nc’, Nq’, Nγ’ = Bearing Capacity factors based on ’ for Local Shear Failure

where, ’ = tan –1(0.67tan)

B = Width of footing, D = Depth of footing,  = unit weight of soil,

Rw = 0.5 {1 + (Dw –D)/B} & if Dw < Df, Rw = 0.5 & if Dw > (D + B), Rw =1.0
= 0.50 for GWT at and above Footing Level
Dw = depth of GWT from Ground Level
Sc, Sq, Sv = Shape factors , For Square Footing Sc =1.3, Sq= 1.2, Sv=0.8
= 1 for Strip Footing
ic, iq, iv = inclination factors =1 for vertical loads.
dc= 1 +0.2 Df/B * (tan (45+/2)
dq, dv = 1 for < 10
dq, dv = 1 +0.2 Df/B * sqrt (tan (45+/2) for >10

Method of Analysis for the given soil type is selected based on the type of soil and strength parameters as
given in Table below :
Method of Analysis for Cohesionless soils ( Phi – Soils) (IS-6403-1981)

Sr. Relative Corrected Void Ratio Condition Method of

No. Density SPT N-value Analysis

1 >=70 % >= 30 <= 0.55 Dense General Shear

2 20 % to 70 % 10 to 30 0.55 to 0.75 Med. Dense Mixed Shear
3 < 20% =<10 >0.75 Loose Local Shear

Method of Analysis for Cohesive soils ( c – Soils)

Sr. Relative SPT N-value Condition Method of

No. Consistency (as Analysis
qu, T/m2)

1 >= 20 >=15 V. Stiff General Shear

2 10 to 20 8 to 15 Stiff Mixed/ Local
Med. Stiff &
3 <10 <8 Local Shear
Soft

For C-Phi soils any of the above are difficult to use. A more generalized criteria which
may be used is based on Stress – Strain Curve : Failure strain =< 5% leads to general shear
failure and >=15% leads to Local Shear Failure. Field SPT-Test and SCPT-Test definitely gives
indication of the state of soil and experienced Geotechnical Engineers judiciously use the same.

SAFE BEARING PRESSURE: SETTLEMENT CRITERIA (COHESIONLESS SOIL) :

For cohesionless soils IS 8009 uses the settlement v/s N-values chart for settlement
calculations. The value obtained from the chart is to be corrected for the Water Table.

SAFE BEARING PRESSURE: SETTLEMENT CRITERIA (COHESIVE SOIL) :

The settlement due to the footing pressure is calculated using Theory of Elasticity.
Boussinesq’s pressure distribution theory gives increase in stress within the soil mass due to
additional pressure imparted by footing. Settlement of cohesionless soil occurs immediately
whereas in clay long term settlement due to consolidation also occurs, which is calculated using
Theory of One Dimension Consolidation by Terzaghi. IS 8009-part I incorporates the guidelines
and procedure for calculation of settlement of the footing.

Settlement Calculations : (Refer IS-8009 Part-I. )

The Total Settlement is calculated as :

Sf  Rd.Rr.(Si  Sc)

Where,

Rd = Depth Factor (fig. 12), Rr = Rigidity Factor ( page21), 0.8 to 1.0

Si = Immediate Settlement (may be disregarded)

qns.B.(1   
Si 
s.I
Where,

qns = net allowable bearing pressure kN/m2 for settlement

B = width of footing

μ = Poisson’s ratio (0.35 to 0.5, for Clay)

Es = Young’s Modulus ( 500 Cu to 1000 Cu, for Clay)

I = Influence Factor ( fig. 11), Sc = Consolidation Settlement

For Normally Consolidated Clays,

.Cc.H po  p
Sc   .log 10{ } , for all layers upto (1.5 x B) depth below footing.
(1  eo) po
Where,
Cc = Compression Index ( From Consolidation Test)

e0 = Initial Void Ratio

H = Thickness of Layer

p’ = existing effective Pressure at middle of the layer due to overburden

δp’ = Additional Pressure at the middle of the layer (Use Fig. 18)

For Over Consolidated Clays / Hard Clays,

Sc   mv.H.p , for all layers upto (1.5 X B) depth below footing.

is taken from table – 1, IS: 8009 (Part – 1)

where;
H = thickness of soil layer (m)
mv = Coefficient of Volume Change
δp = Increase in pressure at middle cohesive soil layer.

If the soil deposits consists of several regular soil layers in the influence zone, the settlement of
each layer below the foundation shall be computed and summed to obtain the total settlement.
The settlement obtained thus will be corrected for depth factor and rigidity factor as per IS 8009.
It should not exceed the allowable settlement as per the Table given below :

MAX. ALLOWABLE SETTLEMENT

4.3 ALLOWABLE BEARING CAPACITY CALCULATIONS

4.3.1 Allowable Bearing Capacity Based On Presumptive Values

For preliminary design these presumptive values may be taken based on the assessment
of experienced engineering geologist taking into consideration the various characteristics of
rockmass. As per Table -2 IS 12070 -1987 the safe bearing pressure is given below:

Foliated rocks such as schist or slate in sound 400
condition
Bedded lime stone in sound condition 400

Sedimentary rock incl. hard shales and sand stones. 250

Soft or broken rock (excl. shales ) and broken lime 100

stones
Shales 40
CORRECTION TO BE APPLIED

For getting the allowable bearing pressure the safe bearing pressure obtained from
above Table shall be multiplied with the correction factors according to the geological
conditions as per IS: 12070 Clause 9.2.

Correction Factors :
submerged conditions C1= 0.50 to 0.75 depending upon the aperture of joints .
orientation of joints C2 = 0.50 to 1.00 for joint orientation, applicable for slopes only.

q = 100 T/m2, C1=0.5 and C2=1.0

ANALYSIS, RESULTS & RECOMMENDATIONS
(FOR DEEP FOUNDATION)

5.1 General :
The main aim of the Investigations is to determine type of foundation, placement depth
and safe bearing capacity for the proposed structure.

5.2 CHOICE OF TYPE OF FOUNDATION:

For Foundation, in present case it is envisaged by client to adopt Pile Foundation. The
Pile Carrying capacity is calculated for bored cast in situ RCC Pile with diameter 600mm,
750mm and 900mm with length of pile 6m below EGL is considered.

5.3 PILE FOUNDATION :

The loads can be transferred to medium depths through piles. The piles may be bearing
piles or friction piles depending upon the soil strata. Cast in situ bored RCC piles are normally
used for such situations. The safe carrying capacity of a single pile is calculated using Static
Formula. The recommendations by IS:2911 (Pt-1/Sec-2)-2010 is used for the Bored Cast insitu
Concrete Pile.
Pile Carrying Capacity – Calculations:

For General Shear Failure Criteria :

Qsafe = { Qs + Qb)/ FOS

Where,
Qs = Capacity in Skin Friction. For Cohesionless soil it is given as
= Σ (Qsi) for all layers, = 1 to n
Qsi = [ Σ(α. C. L )i + Σ (q’ x Ks. Tanδ . L.)i ] x 3.14 x D
q’i = Effective Overburden at the mid depth of the layer.
Ks = Coeff. Of Earth Pressure at Rest, take 1.0
δ= Angle of Wall Friction at the interface of pile and soil, taken as
Φ D = Pile Diameter.
L = Length of Pile for ‘i’th
segment. C = Cohesion in T/m2.
Qb = Capacity in Base Resistance
= [(9.00 x C) + (q’ x Nq ) ]* 0.785 x D2

q’= Eff. Overburden at base, Subjected to a max. value at depth = 20x pile dia.
Nq = Bearing Capacity factors as per IS-2911 part-1, Section-2,

For Cohesive soil, Nq

=0 FOS = Factor of Safety
=2.50.

The Safe Carrying Capacity of the pile is calculated as per the Tables given
below including the soil parameters assumed.
