PERSONAL BACKGROUND

Lisette A. Omayana is a twenty year-old third year college student in Father Saturnino
Urios University, Butuan City. Lisette currently lives with her mother, and her older
sister and brother. Her father passed away when she was in her junior year. Right now,
her mother and older brother work to provide for their family. Jasmine grew up in an
environment that is not ideal for a growing child. According to her, when she was
younger, she would always wake up in the morning already hearing unpleasant words
from her bickering aunt and uncle. Even after she goes to school, when she comes back
home she would still hear their nonstop shouting about all the things that’s possible.
Wanting to get away from such an environment, she said she would often go to her
friend’s house just across their street. There she would spend the remaining time playing
and studying with her friend and her friend’s siblings. She would only go home when her
mother gets back from work.
The everyday scenery in her young life made Jasmine promise herself that she would be
an achiever. And thus she became an achiever. She always gets high marks in her exams,
top her classes and earn pleasant remarks from her teacher. She wanted to become a
professional and have a successful life in the future. Jasmine possesses love and passion
for music and writing. She said that if she will be able to continue to continue and study
for college, she would want to take either a course in Journalism or Music. She wanted
to enter the University of the Philippines but she wasn’t sure if she’d be able to pass the
admission test. Jasmine feels that she needs to be pointed in the right direction, because
she is not sure of the best education and career choices that would lead her to what she
dreams of having, a well-off life, away from the environment she grew up in.

TEST RESULTS & INTERPRETATION

The Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT) is designed to give the respondent and the
test-givers an idea of the respondent's academic capabilities. The OLSAT can be used to
predict future academic performance, or to compare the level of current academic
performance with the level of capability. The OLSAT is divided into two parts: verbal
and nonverbal. The scores on these parts are expressed as raw scores, percentile ranks
(in comparison to norms by age), and Stanine scores.

Jasmine’s score on the OLSAT are as follows:

Total

Raw Score: 59
Scaled Score: 702
Performance by Age –
School Ability Index (SAI): 116
Percentile Rank: 84
Stanine Score: 7

Verbal

Raw Score: 32
Scaled Score: 731
Performance by Age –
School Ability Index (SAI): 124
Percentile Rank: 93
Stanine: 8

Nonverbal

Raw Score: 27
Scaled Score: 678
Performance by Age –
School Ability Index (SAI): 107
Percentile Rank: 67
Stanine: 6 IMPRESSION & CONCLUSION

Jasmine seems to be a very competent student. As shown in the results of her OLSAT
and as stated that she tops her classes, she will be very capable of doing and achieving
the things she wishes to pursue. If she will be able to maintain her performance or even
improve it, there is no doubt that she may also be able to enter the university she doubts
herself she could enter.
Jasmine is clearly capable of comprehending the English language thus giving her the
advantage of answering the questions with ease. This would also help her in other fields
aside from the educational setting.
Jasmine also seems to be organized. This showed on the way she answered her test
booklet. She never stayed way to long in one single item. If she finds one item to be
difficult, she would skip it and proceed to the next if she wouldn’t be able to answer it
within two or more minutes. In this way she was able to manage her time and finish the
test ahead of the allotted time and had plenty enough to go back to those that she
skipped.

RECOMMENDATION

a) Jasmine should strive to continue her education. Jasmine’s historic academic

achievements and OLSAT scores have proven that she is very capable of
collegelevel work. Her abilities will no doubt help her to enter a university and be
able to finish a course.

b) Jasmine should consider a profession that requires proficiency in the use of

language. Having high scores in the verbal categories, she is expected to have a
good mastery of English language, to follow instructions easily and to show
facility in reading and expression. With these, she may always pursue a
journalism course just like what she wanted. Her abilities would definitely help
her in its course requirements.
