(Due: June 6, 2021 – at 1:00 PM)

Problem No. 1: Failure of a car follows a “Bath-Tub” probability distribution (Shown

Below). Dive the CDF (Cumulative Distribution Function F(x)), then use the Uniform random
number Ri (i= 1,2,3,......5)

a) Generate five chip failure (show your work in details).

f1 (x) = f2 (x) = f3 (x) =

F1 (x) = F2 (x) = F3 (x) =

R1 = R2 = R3 =

X1 = X2 = X3 =

R1 =0.05 R 2 =0.95 R 3 =0.5 R 4 =0.7324 R 5 = 0.31

X1 = X2= X3 = X4 = X5 =

b) Calculate the Average failure cost paid by the warranty if the cost per failure for the
three intervals are: $700, $500, and $300 respectively.
Average failure cost =

Problem No. 2: Failure in electronic chips follow a Probability Density Function (Shown
below). Drive the CDF (Cumulative Distribution Function F(x)), then use the Uniform random
number Ri (i= 1,2,....,5).

a) Generate five chip failure (show your work in details).

f1 (x) = f2 (x) =

F1 (x) = F2 (x) =

R1 = R2 =

X1 = X2 =

R = 0.15 R = 0.99 R = 0.5 R = 0.8 R = 0.2

b) Calculate the Average failure cost paid by the warranty if the cost per failure for
the three intervals are: $700 and $500 respectively.

Average failure cost =

Problem No. 3: Plotted (below) is a Probability Distribution for an industrial case that is
fitted by Normal Distribution. Normal Distribution is not a good fit:

a) Find the best fit using Linear function (and Discrete function) using the red lines
in the graph;
b) Compare your method to the industry and
c) Show the superiority of your method numerically.

Problem No. 4: A ROBUST design is needed for an oil pipes using Poiseuille's Law. Pipes
data is as follows:

 The volume flow (F) is mathematically modeled as: F= (π P R2)/ (8 V – L).

 Pressure Difference (P), Radius (R), Viscosity (V) & Length (L) are all N ~(µ, σ).
 The tolerance limits for the volume flow is required to be in the range: (1200.00 - 1400.00).
 The flow is Normally Distributed with usable natural variation of (µ±3σ).
 Available parts are with dimensions that are Normally Distributed as follows:

µ σ µ σ
P1 50 4 P2 60 8
R1 60 3 R2 70 6
V1 80 5 V2 85 4
L1 40 3 L2 45 2

Use at least 12 random numbers to justify your selection for the robust alternative.
