Energy Signal
A signal with finite energy is an energy signal. Normally non-periodic signals are energy signal and If the
energy is calculated then it will result finite value.

Formula for Energy

𝐸𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑔𝑦 𝐸 lim |𝑥 𝑡 | 𝑑𝑡

Power Signal
A signal with finite power is termed as power signal.
Power is time average of energy. Since averaging is over an infinitely large interval, a signal with finite
energy has zero power and a signal with finite power has infinite energy. Therefore, a signal cannot be both
energy and power signal. However, a signal can be neither power nor energy signal.
Formula for Power

1
𝑃𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟, 𝑃 lim 𝑥 𝑡 𝑑𝑡
→ 2𝐿

1
𝑃𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟, 𝑃 lim |𝑥 𝑡 | 𝑑𝑡
→ 2𝐿

For periodic signal the formula is

1
𝑃𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟, 𝑃 𝑥 𝑡 𝑑𝑡
𝑇

Important Notes:
1. Periodic signals are power signals and calculated power will be finite value and calculated energy
will have infinite value.
2. Non-periodic signals are energy signal and calculated energy will be of finite value but calculated
power will be infinite value
3. When both power and energy will be infinite then the signal will be called as neither energy nor
power in short NENP signal.

As the power is zero, therefore the given signal is an Energy Signal

Determine whether the given signal is energy signal or power signal?

𝑥 𝑡

This signal has two parts:
a. From minus infinity to zero its value is A
b. From zero to plus infinity is decaying exponentially.
The given signal can be expressed as

continues upto to . After that the signal is again zero

By observing, it is possible to identify the nature of the signal. The signal has started from minus infinity and
signal ends in plus infinity. So, the signal is likely to be power signal. If, after calculation, power is finite
then it is confirmed that that the signal is power signal. Let us calculate the power now.
