What’s In?

Before we proceed to our lesson on composing clear and coherent sentences

using coordinating conjunctions, let’s try to recall first your previous lesson on simple
sentences.

3
What is a simple sentence?
A simple sentence may have one or more than one subject and one or more than one
predicate but it gives only one complete thought or idea.
Examples:
1. Junk foods are not good for the body.
2. Burnham Park is considered to be one of the most famous parks in the country.
Simple Sentence has a subject and a predicate and expresses a complete thought. The
subject can be compound, meaning more than person doing something. The verb can also
be compound, meaning the subject is doing more than one thing.

What’s New?

Read the paragraph then answer the questions that follow.

Many ordinary things that we do contribute to the endangering of our planet. Vehicles
eject poisonous gases which contain carbon monoxide, and other pollutants pollute the air.
Burning of fuels by industries and factories spews tremendous amount of carbon dioxide into
the atmosphere. These gases form a thick blanket in the earth’s surface and cause greater
heating of the earth. As a result, this heat melts the ice caps and glaciers in the poles and
come down as floods. In a much greater effect, the ozone layer is damaged and it allows the
ultraviolet radiation of the sun to pass through the earth. This causes skin cancer and other
diseases.
These activities of man put our earth in greater danger but we can still do something
before it is too late. We must save our planet because it is the only planet we have.
Planting trees and plants is one best way to save our planet. Trees and plants absorb
the carbon dioxide in the air. Their roots hold water on the ground and prevent flooding.
Another way is to learn how to segregate our waste properly. Avoid burning plastics
to prevent pollution.
Let us save the earth now or we will suffer the consequences of abusing our only
place to live.

1. What are the different activities of man that contribute to the endangering of our planet?
Name at least 2.
2. What are the things we can do to save our earth? Give at least 2.
3. Why do we need to save the earth?

4
What is It?

Read the following sentences taken from the paragraph “Let us Save the Earth”.
1. Vehicles eject poisonous gases and other pollutants pollute the air.
2. These activities of man put our earth in great danger but we can still do something
before it’s too late.

What can you say about the underlined parts in each sentence?
Does each part contain a subject and a predicate?
Does each underlined part express a complete thought?
What word connects these ideas or thoughts?

Each sentence consists of two simple sentences joined together. Each simple
sentence is called an independent clause. In the first sentence, Vehicles is the simple subject
and eject is the predicate verb of the first independent clause while pollutants is the simple
subject and pollute is the predicate verb of the second independent clause. Theword and
joins the two independent clauses. In the second sentence, activities is the simple subject
and put is the predicate verb of the first independent clause. The word we isthe simple subject
and can do is the predicate verb of the second independent clause.
The word but joins the two independent clauses.

When two or more complete thoughts or ideas are joined by and or but, the sentence
becomes a compound sentence. Each part of a compound sentence is an independent
clause. An independent clause does not modify anything else in the sentence, nor does it
depend on the rest of the sentence for its meaning.

The words that are used to connect independent clauses to become a compound
sentence are called coordinating conjunctions.

The clauses of a compound sentence are usually joined by a comma and any of the
coordinating conjunctions. There’s an easy way to remember them – their initials can be
spelled as FANBOYS.
Most commonly used Coordinating Conjunctions
1. for – It is used to explain reason or purpose just like because or since.
Ex. She doesn’t get sick easily for she always eats fruits and vegetables.
2. and - It is used to show similar or additional ideas.
Ex. I wash my clothes every Saturday and I also clean our comfort room.
3. nor - It is used to present an alternative negative idea to an already stated
negative idea.
Ex. Today is neither the first nor the last day of the month.
4. but - It is used to show contrast or a difference between two sentences or ideas.

5
Ex. Many like to be appreciated but they don’t like to work.
5. or- It means either. It is used to show choice or alternative between two
sentences or ideas.
Ex. We can cook soup for dinner or we can just eat leftovers.
6. yet-It is similar to but which shows a difference or a change between two
sentences or ideas.
Ex. The things we experience are really difficult, yet we should be patient.
7. so- It is used to show consequence or result.
It is the opposite of for or because. For and because show the cause or the
reason and so shows the effect.
Ex. I will study hard so I will get high grades.
